Ellen surveyed the players as the cards were collected for another hand. There was Big Hat, a florid, heavyset guy wearing a black cowboy hat with a silver band. He'd brought a big bankroll to the game, obviously hoping to buy his way into winning pots. His skills were mediocre, though, and his stack of chips was still respectable, though smaller than when he'd started.
Sucker One was a skinny guy in a cheap suit. He'd brought the minimum buy-in and was playing too conservatively, fearful of losing his investment. He wasn't a bad player, but the stakes in this game were clearly more than he was comfortable losing--so he'd be broke soon unless he could put his fears aside and play more clear-headedly.
Sucker Two was a loud guy just out of college. Ellen would bet good money he'd been in a frat, and came from money. He threw money around like it meant little to him. His skills weren't bad, but he had obvious tells, and could rarely bring himself to fold when he should have. She'd played him before, and cleaned him out more than once.
And then there was Nathan. He didn't need a nickname because he'd introduced himself when he sat down at the table. He was the only real competition in this game. He folded most hands, but when he stayed in he often won the pot. Ellen didn't have a solid read on him yet. No obvious tells, watchful, and a great Poker face.
"I haven't seen you here before, Nathan. Where are you from?" she asked.
