Life in Madison Valley was never dull and even after nearly nine years, Darcy still occasionally felt like her head was spinning with all the changes and unpredictable events. She was grateful that she and Steve got through their wedding without any chaos, though the impromptu trip to the creepiest motel in the universe was not what she had in mind for a honeymoon. Plus she was a little disappointed that the dome waited until after the wedding to bring in Thor and Kitty.
Now that they were back from the clown nightmare, she finally made plans with Thor to join her and Steve for dinner so they could catch up on their lives. Darcy mostly hadn’t let herself think about what he said about Jane’s future, though she had a lot of questions. And she assumed he had many about this strange town. Even though Steph wanted to hang out with Uncle Thor, Darcy sent her daughter out to the farm for the evening so the grownups could talk without her around. She promised that they would have Thor over again soon so Steph could spend time with him.
Feeding a god and a super soldier meant that Darcy decided to work from home so she could cook all day. There was a massive pot roast, a ham, five pounds of mashed potatoes, cheesy rice with broccoli, and carrots. Plus she made an apple pie and a cherry pie for dessert to be served with the gallon of vanilla ice cream in the freezer. Their grocery bills were always ridiculous.

The motel thing was definitely not what Steve had had in mind for after their wedding. Even though it was nowhere near his fault, he felt he needed to make it up to Darcy for that…thing. The trick would be finding time to go anywhere. The daycare took up a lot of his time outside of home. Darcy and Steph were his other priority, even more important to him than the daycare, and he didn’t want to exclude Steph from anything.
Tonight, however, they were child-free since Thor was coming for dinner. Steve anticipated a boisterous evening, which was perfectly fine with him. He’d missed the Asgardian, and was glad he was here. He had no doubt Frigga was glad for it too. Loki’s feelings on the matter were debateable.
Steve walked into the kitchen and caught his wife by the waist from behind. “What can I do?” he asked then pulled her in for a bear hug and a kiss to her head.

Thor was very much looking forward to seeing his friends. It had been some time since he’d seen either of them and they had all been through many things - good and bad - since then. He regretted that he had sad news to pass on to Darcy, but he hoped that their reunion would have some joy, nonetheless.
Having been raised not to show up empty handed, he carried in his arms several jugs of mead from Home Brew. Split three ways, it was likely not enough to get him drunk, but it very well might be enough for Darcy. Steve, he was unsure. He wasn’t certain how his super soldier powers dealt with alcohol.
Arriving at their door, he knocked solidly once, twice, then three times, and then waited for someone to answer the door.

“You can get out of my way,” Darcy said with a grin, turning her head so she could kiss her husband’s cheek. “Dinner’s almost ready. Thor should be here soon.” No sooner had she spoken the words then they heard a knock on the door. “Go answer the door.”
She shooed him out of the kitchen and started pulling things out of the fridge that they would need. The table was already set and she was not looking forward to the mountain of dishes that would need done later.
*
Darcy was really good at shooing. Steve could literally tear wooden stumps in two, but his wife could make him flinch and run. It was a never ending source of amusement however, so he grinned as he skittered out of the kitchen to go answer the door.
Seeing his friend looking better than the last time Steve had seen him put a big smile on his face. “Hey, Thor! Good to see you!” He reached out to clasp Thor’s arm before he stepped back to welcome the Asgardian in.

Thor was beyond pleased to see Steve. He had been lost to him for several years now, and it had been another grief to add to the many he had experienced in the last few years. Seeing him strong and hale brought a smile to his face and he returned his friend’s greeting before stepping inside.
“It is good to see you as well. And to hear of your wedding. I congratulate you, and I regret missing your wedding.” Thor enjoyed parties, especially ones that were based on something so worth celebrating.
He handed him the bottles of mead and looked around their place.
“You must tell me how the two of you ended up together.”

As she carried things from the kitchen to the dining room, Darcy overheard Thor’s comment and started to laugh. “Oh, he was relentless,” she joked. “Wouldn’t leave me alone. Practically turned into a stalker. I had to marry him so I wouldn’t end up chained in a basement.”
She couldn’t resist teasing both men and was pretty sure that Thor knew her well enough that he’d know she was joking. If anything, the reverse would have been true, with Darcy being the aggressor in their relationship.

Steve blinked at Dacry’s story then sighed at Thor. “I never did that. We met at speed dating and I challenged her to let me treat her like a lady.” Then she’d caught him and it was all over from there.
He walked with Thor to the dining room, his hand placed companionably on the Asgardian’s back. “You’ll have to tell me what’s going on back home.” Steve wasn’t from the same time as most of them were. He knew they’d won, but to his memory people were still dusted and lost.

Thor blinked at Darcy’s words, then let out a rather jolly laugh at them. Of course he didn’t believe that Steve had been any sort of aggressor, not with how well he knew Darcy. She took what she wanted, and he actually liked that about her. “I believe Steve’s words more,” he said seriously. In fact, it sounded very much more like what actually would have happened.
“There is much going on back home,” he said, becoming quite a bit more serious as he spoke. “Perhaps we will speak of it after dinner.” That seemed a better time to tell them of Jane’s death, even though they already knew. It was still sad to speak of it.
***
“Everyone believes Steve more,” Darcy said, her tone matter-of-fact with some amusement underlying. There was a good reason for that since he was the one telling the truth. She had influenced him enough to make jokes and sarcastic comments on occasion though, something she was very proud of.
Her smile faltered at Thor’s words. Even knowing he was several years ahead of her, the bits he’d shared so far were devastating and she wasn’t sure if she really wanted to know more about Jane’s struggles. “After dinner is good,” she agreed. “Have a seat, boys. We’re just about ready to eat.”
***
Not everyone knew. The last thing Steve knew from experience was Tony’s funeral. He knew he’d disappeared and that the shield had gone to Sam. Beyond that, he was entirely in the dark.
“Everyone believes me more because they know how much you exaggerate.” Steve smirked as he paused to kiss his wife’s cheek.
He caught the implication as well as the tone of Thor’s voice. He wasn’t going to like hearing the tale, but he needed to know what had happened. Steve’s smile grew hesitant for a moment but he brought it back up as he gestured toward the table. “Let me get you a beer.”
