Who: Doc and Wynonna When: During the Upside Down plot Where: The apartment complex What: Fighting creepy monsters Status: Closed; Completed Gdoc
If someone had told Doc that he would someday be shooting creepy creatures with a baby strapped to his chest he would have told them they were crazy. Yet, somehow, here he was, with his infant daughter strapped to his chest, dodging attacks, and welding his Colts in a fucking strange town fighting creepy creatures. At least, Wynonna was beside him. Those auburn locks whipping around her face, Wynonna was a sight to behold with Peacemaker in hand. She could easily put Wyatt to shame even if Doc never told her. She had so much more heart than he ever did.
“I believe these creatures might be worse than the Remnants,” Doc said loudly, aiming one of his Colts at the creatures and sinking a bullet right between the eyes. The two had taken cover behind an overturned vehicle. “And I do wish they had not attacked the apartments, but we never do get what we want, do we?” Well, except for the precious life currently tied tight to his chest. If they hadn’t gone after their current homestead, Doc would have thought twice about venturing out to fight them. With Alice in the picture, his sole focus was on protecting her and Wynonna…well, when she let him that was.
However, the creatures had other plans and attacked their home, forcing Doc and Wynonna’s hand. Now they were outside, battling them as fiercely as they had the dark things from Purgatory. Glancing over at Wynonna, he was struck with the urge to say something, the something that always played on his lips whenever they were in a moment like this, but instead, he forced himself to focus on the fight.
“Shall we divide and conquer then, darling?”
It took a few weeks before Wynonna was willing to let her guard down and accept that whatever was responsible for them being stuck in this strange town was a positive thing since it meant she and Doc actually got to raise their daughter, far away from the Remnants. Which, of course, was pretty much when some other kind of creatures came through a portal and went on a rampage through the town.
The sight of Doc with Alice strapped to his chest, wielding his Colts was… sexier than Wynonna cared to admit. “At least we got the tiny baby headphones so we’re not blowing out Alice’s eardrums,” she said. They’d been a recommendation from one of the other mothers in town and she thought it seemed kind of ridiculous. What could possibly happen that would cause that much noise around their daughter?
Wynonna would never question any advice she got here again. “I suppose,” she said, reluctant to leave his side though she knew he would do whatever it took to keep the baby out of harm’s way. “I’ll draw them away. You circle behind.”
For Doc, Wynonna always looked sexy when she was in the midst of kicking someone’s ass. Of course, being a mom now might have just made her all the more beautiful in Doc’s eyes. Even if they weren’t together, it was clear that Doc cared about Wynonna. When he looked at her, it was as if no one else existed. Even when bullets were whizzing past their heads and death potentially on their horizon, Doc’s feelings for the Earp heir were always worn on his sleeve.
“I did not even know something like that could even exist, but I am eternally grateful for the suggestion,” Doc returned, blue eyes shifting down to the baby strapped to his chest. Alice’s eyes were wide, taking in the violence and mayhem all around, but, hopefully, not truly understanding any of it. At least her ears would be protected and it wasn’t just from the sound of weapons firing all around her either. Death had a distinct volume too and Doc would do anything he could to prevent Alice from ever having to hear it.
From her tone, Doc could tell Wyonna was not pleased by the suggestion, but an attack from behind would give them the element of surprise. They needed it right now. Doc looked over at the woman beside him and before he could think too much about it, he wrapped an arm around her shoulders. Drawing her in briefly, Doc placed a tender kiss on her head. “See you soon darling.” He didn’t plan on dying, but if he did? At least he still had a moment with Wynonna. At least she knew he did care.
With a nod, Doc’s grip tightened on his colt and he took off from behind the car, keeping low and to the shadows as much as possible.
Wynonna’s lips quirked up into something almost resembling a smile when Doc kissed her forehead. There was a lot of history there and she had deep feelings for him that she was doing her best to keep tucked away. She wasn’t made for relationships and they needed to be able to successfully co-parent their daughter for however long they were stuck in this insane place. She never would have believed that there was somewhere that could rival Purgatory for absolutely ridiculous occurrences.
“Be careful,” she warned, knowing that Doc could take care of himself and Alice with no problem. Especially since she was doing the dangerous part by making herself the bait. She waited until Doc was was out of sight before revealing herself by stepping out in the open and holding up Peacemaker. “Come out, come out, wherever you are,” she called. “I just want to play.”
The creatures slowly began to surround her and she turned in a circle, watching them and waiting for Doc’s attack.
As long as breath filled his lungs, Doc would never let anything happen to Alice or Wynonna. Blue eyes watched from the shadows as Wynonna stepped out into the open holding up her trademark weapon. As expected, the creatures slowly surrounded Wynonna and soon had her imprisoned in a circle. The infamous gunslinger only had a few seconds before they would devour his baby’s mother.
Like hell that was going to happen.
“You ready baby girl?” Doc briefly glanced down at the cooing baby strapped to his chest Obviously, there was no response. “I’ll take that as a ‘yes.’ Let’s go kill some monsters and save your momma.” Taking a deep breath, Doc quickly checked his guns and then he was bursting from the shadows.
Even without shouting, a few of the creatures turned his way and, what he guessed was their mouths, opened up, revealing sharp teeth and what Doc took to be a vulnerable spot. Raising his colts, he fired off a few shots towards two of them. The bullets whizzed through the air followed by screams as they contacted the monster’s flesh.
Being very careful with her aim to ensure none of her weapon’s bullets went anywhere near her daughter or babydaddy, Wynonna fired a few shots once Doc had attracted the attention of the creatures. She hit one before another got close enough to put… hands? Claws? Whatever was at the end of the appendenges… on her. A minute or so of tussling and she managed to shoot that one as well.
“Doc, you okay?” she called, getting back to her feet and looking frantically in their direction, wanting to make sure that both he and Alice were okay.
“Wynonna!” Doc shouted, fear evident in his voice. He watched as the creature put its gross paws on her, and Wynonna fought back. Soon, the two of them were wrestling on the ground. Despite the baby on his chest, Doc took off running and lost his hat in the process. He didn’t care. Nothing mattered, but reaching Wynonna. Saving the mother of his child. The woman he…
In the midst of raising one of his Colts, one of the things nabbed him and Doc fell backward. His gun went off as the gunslinger landed hard on the ground. If he was immortal, he would have been on his feet in seconds, but now? It took Doc a moment to recover and the creature was practically on top of him, stinky breath and fangs in his face, before Doc managed to raise his other gun and nearly blast its head clear off.
It crumpled and Doc pushed himself up, attention immediately on the baby strapped to his chest. “I’m sorry, darlin. It’s okay. I promise. I got you.” He bent and retrieved the headphones that must have been knocked off in the tussle on the ground. “Here you go.” He pressed a kiss to that little forehead just as Wynonna called out to him.
He sighed when he saw she was back on her feet and outside of a little dirty, not worse for wear either. “We had a little situation, but it was handled,” Doc replied, glancing down at the dead creature at his feet before making his way over to her. Reaching out, he touched her shoulder and looked her over with critical blue eyes.
“Are you okay? It seems we might have them on the run. I say we stick together and finish them off. I think we might even be in time for Alice to get in her nap.” The last part was Doc’s attempt at a joke. He didn’t see Alice napping after what her innocent eyes just saw. At least, being a baby, there was a good chance she wouldn’t remember it.
Of all the nasty, evil things Wynonna had seen, she couldn’t remember ever being so scared as she was when she saw one of those creatures advancing on Doc and their baby. She scrambled to her feet and huffed a breath of relief when she saw Doc back on his and heard Alice whimpering.
“I’m fine,” she assured him when he was close enough to touch her shoulder. Her own eyes focused on the baby strapped to his chest. How was this even their lives? She leaned in and pressed a kiss to Alice’s forehead. “Your Daddy takes good care of you, baby girl.” Seeing the way Doc was with their daughter only deepened Wynonna’s feelings for him though she would never admit it aloud.
She glanced around and didn’t see any immediate threats. “Let’s head back inside. Maybe we can fortify one of our apartments so they can’t attack again.” It helped that they lived across the hall from each other and could easily pass Alice back and forth depending on what was going on.
Doc had come to know there were a select group of people he would die for in this world. However, there would always be two that he held far above the rest and they were right here with him. He’d do anything for Alice and Wynonna. Though he was a mere mortal man now, he would give everything in his fragile body to ensure they were safe from anything this world threw at them.
“Always.” Doc watched as Wynonna planted a kiss on Alice’s forehead. It was obvious at the sight of Wynonna that the baby calmed down a little. A mother’s presence tended to do that. Plus, Wynonna wasn’t just another mother. She was the Earp heir and one hell of a woman. Despite the situation, Doc felt a spark of happiness ignite in his heart. They were surrounded by death, but he could still picture them as a family. Maybe not now. Maybe not tomorrow. Yet he felt in his bones it would be someday. It gave the gunslinger hope.
Wynonna’s voice pulled Doc from his thoughts and he nodded. Shelter would be a good idea and there was bound to be an apartment left that they could fortify. “Let us take our leave of this place then.” Doc barely resisted the urge to put an arm around Wynonna’s shoulders as they started back towards the apartments. Instead, he kept both his guns drawn and blue eyes peeled for any sign of a creature barreling towards them.
Wynonna didn’t allow her thoughts to wander to any possible future between her and Doc. There was too much at stake right now. Their focus needed to be on doing whatever they had to do to keep Alice safe. Even though there weren’t Revenants here, this place was unpredictable and potentially dangerous which meant they couldn’t let their guard down.
“She probably needs to eat soon,” she added, realizing that her breasts were starting to ache. Now that they’d been here a few weeks, she was recognizing the signs and getting a better handle on the whole breastfeeding thing. “We should too. While we have a chance.” If they got attacked again, they would need all the energy they could get and with Doc newly mortal, she worried that he would forget about such things now that he couldn’t rely on his immortality to protect him.
Once inside, she led them to her apartment and took the baby from the carrier so she could feed her while Doc made sure nothing could get inside. They were a good team that way and Wynonna was grateful that they were here together.
