By now the sight of creatures on occasion wasn’t new, but it wasn’t any more welcomed. Over the past few days, Madison had been hit hard with disappearances, injuries, and these vicious monsters from a place dubbed “The Upside Down.”
At that moment, Rey hadn’t meant to go looking for a fight. She had been on her way to work when she sensed evil a few streets down. She never traveled without her lightsaber, but it was especially true now with what was happening.
When she turned the corner, she saw Anakin across the street. “You sensed it too?”
–
Like Rey, Anakin never traveled without his lightsaber. Even though there was rarely a reason to use said weapon, there were times – like today – that Anakin was grateful for its presence. There was definitely an evil presence in the town, and the Jedi was determined to locate the source. It was no surprise to the young man to see Rey across the street – she was likely able to sense the evil as well.
He nodded slightly at her question, “I did.”
While he knew he would maybe be able to handle the evil presence on his own, he was grateful for Rey’s appearance. The two of them combined had a better chance than one of them on their own. He trusted Rey and her abilities as well, he knew he likely couldn’t find a better partner to fight whatever evil they found with.
“Shall we go find it?” he asked.
–
The idea of fighting alongside Anakin Skywalker would have been strange to Rey before she showed up to Madison. Now it barely came into question. The fact that Rey, herself, felt like the name Skywalker could apply to her - and that Leia and Luke had given their blessing - seemed as if to make such a coupling in a fight make sense, if not a bit surreal.
She nodded and followed the sense of darkness. It was not unlike the demon Belpehagor, she realized. Slightly different, yes, but ultimately the same sort of darkness.
When they turned another corner, they saw two of the most strange creatures. They seemed to have mouths like flower petals and no eyes that she could see. "What are they…?" She questioned quietly as she pulled out her lightsaber. The yellow light shot up from the hilt.
–
Anakin followed Rey down the street. He could feel the sense of darkness grow stronger as they got closer, he didn’t need to follow Rey to know they were getting closer. As soon as they turned the corner and he saw the creatures, Anakin reached for his lightsaber. He had absolutely no idea what these creatures were, but he knew that they were definitely not natural. They were also so dark – they had an almost evil presence to them, really.
A blue light began to emit from the hilt of his own lightsaber as he eyed these creatures. He waited for only a brief moment, waiting to see if these creatures noticed the two Jedi.
But patience had never been a strong suit of Anakin’s. No matter how hard Obi-Wan had tried to instill the virtue of patience into his mind when he was the older Jedi’s Padawan…. And soon, one of the strange creatures was flung against the wall of a building, from Anakin’s using the Force on it.
–
It somehow both surprised Rey and didn’t at the same time. This was definitely different than fighting with Luke or with Ben, but she was suddenly thankful that they occasionally trained together so she could anticipate the way Anakin fought. Rey, too, wasn’t exactly all that patient, and since Anakin made the first move, Rey decided to follow suit. Instead of The Force, Rey ran towards the creature. It screeched and charged at her as well. How it could tell she was there, she had no idea, but soon she was upon it.
A lightsaber was no real match for a demigorgon. It sliced through the creature easily enough, though Rey quickly discovered that decapitation was the only way to make it stop for good. Pride was another attribute that Rey constantly had to work on and today would be a good demonstration of that as she took a moment to ‘celebrate’ the defeat which meant it took her a second to realize that screech hadn’t been a simple battle cry. The demigorgon had screeched to call others to it. And there were many others running toward them now.
–
It likely shouldn’t have surprised Rey all that much that Anakin had made the first move – that he wasn’t the most patient of people. Obi-Wan had warned him of the benefits of controlling his anger, but… like usual, Anakin rarely listened. Well, he tried to listen, but he rarely followed through.
He followed Rey toward the demigorgons, arching an eyebrow slightly as more started coming toward them. This didn’t surprise him much, he was expecting there to be more than just the couple they had originally seen.
The number of demigorgons, however, happened to be a bit more than Anakin had anticipated. It wasn’t that he thought he and Rey couldn’t handle the amount that were coming toward them, though. It was just more than he thought there would be.
He used his lightsaber to decapitate one or two, then maim a few more. He knew that he had to decapitate some of the others – but maiming them at least slowed them down.
–
Part of Rey secretly thrived on moments like this. It wasn’t the actual act of killing, but the adrenaline through fighting made her feel alive. It was one of the things that sometimes scared her, especially since she knew her lineage. While she had mostly come to terms with it and knew herself to be of the Jedi, there’d always be a small voice that said she was Sith.
Rey took care of a few more, her body building up a sweat from the exertion, but in the best of ways. She only caught the creature on the roof when it jumped toward Anakin, but she called out his name in hopes to warn him - “Anakin!”
–
Anakin knew himself to be of the Jedi at the moment – though he knew he would turn to the Sith back home. Right now, though? He knew he was still on the edge of the Dark Side, but he was still of the Jedi. He hadn’t yet crossed over. Hopefully with Rey’s presence in Madison Valley, and Bruce Banner’s help – along with Luna’s presence in his life – he would remain a Jedi.
He had sensed the creature coming in his direction mere seconds before he heard Rey’s voice calling his name in a warning. He looked up toward the creature, and waved his hand to send it flying toward a wall of one of the nearby buildings.
“Thanks,” he said, turning toward Rey for a moment. “...step aside for a second,” he said, as he spotted a demigorgon approaching her from behind. Before she had time to respond, though, Anakin’s lightsaber sliced through the creature’s – was it a neck? – stopping before the weapon reached Rey.
–
They were in sync enough that Rey didn’t flinch and to her slight surprise she realized that she trusted Anakin too - something she never thought was possible back home. After a few more attacks by the creatures she had no name for, the streets seemed to quiet down, albeit now with several dead bodies and blood on the ground.
Breathing a bit more heavily, Rey pushed back some wisps of hairs that had come undone in the fray. “Do you think that is all of them for now?” She looked at him.
–
Anakin was glad that Rey trusted him – he didn’t want to harm her in the slightest. That was the last thing he wanted to do. All he wanted to do was kill these strange creatures and he just happened to get a little close to Rey in the process. He had stopped before causing her any harm, because that had not been his intention.
“I certainly hope so,” he said, once they were at what appeared to be the end of the creatures in the area. “I don’t sense them as much, anyway. They seem not as close – not within walking distance, at least.”
—
She nodded, her shoulders relaxing a little. “I’ve been studying one of the portals… I think we might be able to close them if we use The Force. Obviously we can’t close all of them while there are still people inside, but maybe we can close some of the ones that are in the more vulnerable areas, like the portal at the high school.” Closing a few wouldn’t hurt, would it?
–
He considered Rey's suggestion, and nodded. "That's an excellent idea." He didn't want to close all of the portals, not while there were people in the Upside Down, but they could at least close some of them. He didn't want more people to end up trapped than there were already. So closing a handful of the portals was definitely not a bad idea at all. "I don't see what it could hurt, anyway." And with that, he headed in the direction of the high school. That seemed to be the most logical place to start.
