Charly sat at a tiny round table just big enough for a couple of drinks and maybe a tapas plate. It was one of many crowded along the edges of the room, leaving a large open space for dancing. The room was dark, illuminated only by flashing lights on the walls and ceilings, and spots that swept the room at intervals. Music--in this case, live music produced by the band on the stage down front--made conversation nearly impossible, and yet the buzz of conversation surrounded her beneath the music.
Not that it mattered. She was here alone, drinking, ostensibly to celebrate her new job. She was the new Professors of Mathematics and Engineering. It wasn't ideal, but at least it let her use her skills, though she had to be careful not to introduce theories that wouldn't be discovered for decades or centuries yet. Gordon was slinging booze in another bar because there was no need for a pilot when you couldn't leave the dome.
The music wasn't what she was used to. But it wasn't entirely unfamiliar, given that she'd heard pieces from Gordon's treasured collection of 21st-century music. And some of it was actually pretty good. Not as good as the booze, though.
A lot of things would change in the next four hundred years. But not alcohol. A good whiskey now was every bit as good as any from home. Charly sipped her drink. "Some things never change--and a good thing, too."
