Who: Shawn and Juliet What: Medieval Plot When: Some point during the plot [Backdated] Where: Their house Rating: low
Juliet knew her husband didn’t always appreciate some of the antics that came from being married to her. Just like she knew no other man would put up with them the way her husband did, and she loved him for dealing with them the best he could, even when she knew it probably wasn’t always the easiest. While Shawn was working, Juliet went out after cleaning their house. She was looking to pick up a few items and see if anyone was selling anything that might be a wonderful gift for Shawn.
She'd become distracted by a man selling medical oils and claiming that they were the future. The idea was fascinating, and yet a small part of her was questioning it. Still, Juliet was amused and had to share this with Shawn. He may not find it as funny, but she was hoping he’d get a great laugh out of it like she did. Buying only one, Juliet couldn’t wait to show Shawn the whole idea behind the oil and what it was meant to do.
She set it aside once home; she hadn’t even started dinner, thanks to her little adventure. Instead, she was waiting for Shawn to return home, and when he did, Juliet was beaming and practically bouncing with excitement to tell him about what she bought. "How was your day?" Juliet figured she’d learn about his day before telling him about her little adventure. —
Making, mending, and selling shoes was not something that Shawn particularly had a passion for. His father had been a shoemaker and his father before that which was why Shawn had the skills to do it as well. It was the practical choice to take over the small shop in town that his family had carved out for themselves. Shoemaking was a steady job that got work which was why he never even thought of pursuing anything else.
Tired and smelling like leather, Shawn entered to find his wife still with more energy at the end of the day than he had when he woke up. How she was able to find it all was beyond him. At least it meant she could keep up with the children when they came.
“Business was steady. The tanner tried to sell me some leather overpriced, but then I reminded Bernard that his father sold to mine and I wouldn’t be swindled so easily. The prices magically lowered.”
–
Juliet would never ever admit it aloud, but she was glad the two hadn’t had any children to worry about. With her…..habits, if someone wanted to use that word, Juliet didn’t feel quite ready to be a mother even with her being on the older side. Not that she ever say that since she knew children were something people expected her to have. Just like she knew Shawn wanted them, Juliet just kept hoping it wouldn’t happen and so far it hadn’t. If she had kids, then she’d need to focus on that more and not having a little fun or trying to get her husband to loosen up a bit. A job all on its own sometimes.
Listening to Shawn talk about the shoe business was not as thrilling as she’d like, but she loved him and if this was the path he wanted, then she’d support it. It put food on the table and a roof over their head; however, she did find it slightly boring. Another thing she’d never say aloud. “That’s because you’re a great businessman and know how to make it work in your favor,” she told Shawn with a smile. “That’s uncalled for, though trying to sell the leather overpriced.”
Moving back to where she had set the bottle, she had a feeling this wasn’t going to go over well with how his mood seemed; however, Juliet wasn’t about to wait for his mood to perk up. At that rate, she’d be waiting a long time. “You won’t believe what this man tried to sell me today. I only purchased one cause as ridiculous as the whole thing is, I had to show you,” she said, setting the little bottle down in front of her husband.
—
He took the bottle into his hands and examined it. He wondered what kind of concoction it really was. There was probably a spice in there to make you feel like it was doing something. He frowned a little. “If you bought one, then he didn’t try, he succeeded.” He hoped it wasn’t a lot of money. Maybe he could go back to this man and get him to return the money.
He sighed softly, but looked at his wife with kindness. “Ad what is it supposed to do?”
–
Juliet almost sighed at her husband’s reaction. While not surprised, she felt he needed to lighten up just a bit and embrace the ridiculous items that people sometimes sold. "He tried to sell me a lot more. This was a great deal, and I wanted to get one to see if there was any truth behind what the man said or not." Though she hadn’t quite figured out how to test that. Juliet had no plan to put it on herself, especially with no idea what it could end up actually doing. She moved to stand next to Shawn, looking at him. Juliet could see he was heading towards the annoyed side with this purchase, but she wasn’t about to harp on that. It was already done, and he would have to live with it. Now she just had to get him to let it go or be open-minded about the whole ordeal. Juliet had a feeling it’d have to be the "let it go" aspect. "It’s meant to cure illnesses that may fall upon an individual. This is meant to be a treatment to help someone who is sick." Her eyes were watching him closely, hopeful for a positive reaction or even neutral. She could work with that. —
He lifted the vial up again as if that was going to help him discern what was in it. It looked more than just water which was a change of pace for these people. He uncorked it and took a sniff. “Smells like turmeric… probably to make you feel like the heat is somehow ridding the body of the sickness.” He knew of the spice as it was sometimes used to dye the leather if a client paid him enough. “A cure-all like this would no doubt be spoken highly of by the Queen if it worked, I’m sure.” This was Shawn’s way of confirming it was a hoax. “They should hang these swindlers.” He meant it literally.
– Juliet couldn’t help the hint of a small smile and a look of interest when noticing her husband went to have a sniff of the contents in the vial. He probably wasn’t all that amused, but she was, especially when he said what it smells like. “A perfect way to make sure it looks like the contents is working for the individuals who bought it, hoping it would cure them.” Juliet had to give the people some credit since they made it where some people might think it was working, and tell others about it. “Unless,” she added with a smile, knowing Shawn probably wasn’t going to like the comment that was going to continue, but she didn’t care since it was only them and she wasn’t completely serious, “the Queen is wanting to keep it for herself.” And the look she got was pretty much what she had been expecting even if she was only giving her husband a hard time. “I think hanging is a bit too much. Yes, they should get in trouble, but you don’t need to go that far.”
—
Shawn thought hanging was a perfectly sound idea. You hanged enough of them and people would be bound to stop, or so was his opinion on the matter. Considering he never wanted to be a thief or charlatan, he didn’t fear retribution from the law or maybe he’d think otherwise.
“Are you going to try it then and tell me how well you feel after or is this a trinket we’re to keep on a shelf until it starts to turn?” He wasn’t sure where his wife was going with this, but he never was. She always seemed to have some sort of plan or path though.
–
Juliet couldn’t help herself. She got curious and didn’t think things through until after she had done it or bought it, then she’d think it over only to ignore and carry on with the original plan in mind. Someone needed to be the fun one and it sure as heck wasn’t about to be her husband with his serious nature. “Maybe I should get another one, and do a bit of both,” she offered and while she was only joking, she could see her husband was not at all amused. No surprise there.
“I haven’t fully decided. I might not use myself to tell, but I may see what happens when it sits after a few days.” There was no way her husband would allow her to use his money to offer up someone to try it, and she wasn’t even going to bring it up. If anything, she would do it and then tell him afterwards. Easier to deal with than doing it before, and less likely for him to have a fit until later. “Not like it will be in your way, Shawn!” She exclaimed since she’d put it over here and out of his sight.
—
He did not look amused. He looked startled until he looked at her again and could tell she was joking. Phew. Crisis averted. They did not need to waste their money on this stuff. They had winter to prepare for.
Shawn sighed. “Fine. But next time can we agree to talk about purchases like this first?” he didn’t think it would actually happen because they both knew if she had brought it up, he’d have never agreed. He sighed again though and stood up. He pulled her into a hug and kissed her temple. “I do love you, you know.”
–
“Yes, I can agree to that,” she added, but Juliet also knew it was very unlikely. Sometimes people were selling items and she didn’t have the time to get to Shawn. What if she missed out because she had to go talk to Shawn? Nah, the agreement would probably last a few days like it always did before Juliet went back to her old ways. Maybe sooner if someone was selling something that caught her attention.
She wrapped her arms around him and smiled. “I know you do, and I love you as well.” Even if sometimes he was a bit of a bore and not all that fun, he was her husband who she loved dearly.
