Wolves gonna wolf
Mia looked a little different from usual in the fact that she had a lot more hair than usual and, as was custom, it was up in braids and a bun since she was a married woman. Since she wasn’t with child yet, she was still allowed to go out with the others when they needed to raid and this also meant she could train the younger ones in the settlement too. The last raid felt like it was forever ago and she was feeling the itch to go out more acutely the last day or so. It wasn’t until they were at a feast with some of the others of their settlement that it even occurred to her that maybe it was the beast inside of her and not her normal need to go out and fight.
Her foot began to tap restlessly as she reached for an ale brought to her by her husband. She had a plate of fish and chicken in front of her that she had already half devoured. Thankfully vikings ate a lot and so they never had to hide their eating habits with their kin.
Nick ate and looked around, spotting his daughter eating her own plate of food. He loved Mia as much as he’d loved his first wife, who’d been dead since his daughter’s sixth birthday.
“Do you need to go run?” Nick whispered to his wife. He knew he might need to Change too, but he could wait a few days. However, Nick never let his wife or daughter go by themselves. Too many chances of something happening and their type preferred to run with others.
She gave him a small, low growl which wasn’t specifically directed at Nick and no doubt gave her answer away. Mia closed her eyes and managed to refocus before opening them with more calm and taking another bite of food. “Why is it when we’ve little to do, I can’t keep the same pace as you?” Mia knew it was better to run together too. There had been a few of them killed even by their own clans who did not know of their differences. Mia always hoped that if she were to be killed as a wolf, it would be by a Viking and not the weaker, softer sort in the town proper who would not do anything with the body except leave it to be eaten by scavengers.
Nick gave his beautiful wife a smile. “You’re still young, my love.” He took another bite of food and chuckled at her answer.
He would also prefer to be killed by a Viking and not by some freak accident by a townsperson or Lord.
“We can go tonight. Should we go by ourselves or should I invite Kate?” Nick liked to include his daughter when possible, but he had to balance delicately against what his young wife wanted.
There was nothing better than running as a wolf except perhaps when you fought with a sword. Being a werewolf meant you could do both and while some called what they were a curse, Mia had always seen it as a blessing. Being just human felt awfully boring.
“Kate can come if she wants,” Mia had no ill will to the girl who wasn’t hers by blood. Kate was important to Nick and so was important to Mia. The only thing that Mia regret was it was taking long to have their own child, though they were not want of trying. “I can hold no promises how much time I’ll give you after the run.” Because running left Mia in a state that needed satiating in ways only her husband could attend to.
Nick appreciated that he could do both too. Life rarely felt boring to him which he preferred.
“I’ll mention it to her once we finish eating. She may not want to join us.” Nick knew first hand the state Mia found herself after a run, and perhaps it best his daughter not join them tonight. But, he’d at least offer it to her.
He hoped that he and Mia would find themselves with a child at some point. While he loved Kate, he knew how badly Mia wanted a little one of her own. And he did think a baby would fit in nicely within their family.
She felt another wave of frenzy rush through her and she took a moment to let it pass before continuing to eat. She knew as she got older she could hold back the Change longer, but Mia could be a bit impatient at times.
“Husband…” She looked as if she were going to change her mind with what she wanted to say, but then it probably became evident she had to admit the words. “.... I am uncertain if I can wait until nightfall.” Admitting it had been hard for her, but she was getting better at being truthful to herself too.
Nick finished the remaining bites of food on his plate. He remembered how it felt to not be in complete control of Changes.
“Well, let us go then, so you don’t put it off much longer.” He leaned over and kissed her cheek, before he whispered, “I’m proud you could tell me, wife.” Nick stood and decided to not invite Kate this time, not if he and Mia needed a quick escape.
She exhaled, annoyed with herself more than anything else. It was lessened by the prospect of running. She grabbed two ales on the way out and leaned in close to him so that anyone watching them leave would assume they were going off to have sex. That would definitely happen, but not right away.
Once they were far enough from the settlement, and their ale drank, she was already feeling better. She started off in a jog toward the trees, turning halfway to smile widely as she looked at her husband. "We should race again. See if I can beat you this time."
Nick certainly didn’t mind if people thought he was taking his lovely wife to bed. He would, but not right away.
The ale tasted delicious, as it usually did. He laughed, happy to indulge his wife. “I’m always happy to race you, wife.” Nick started to run, towards a good place they could Change and not be noticed by others.
“Well, Wife, are you going to run with me?”
“I am always ready, husband.” She offered him a wicked smile before she began to disrobe. She and the others had heard in town there was someone calling themselves a witcher. He claimed to hunt, among other things, werewolves. Mia wasn’t sure how wary to be of the man, but being a viking was a benefit to them as those in town already saw them as barbaric. They would attribute any strange behaviour to that first.
Changing took time and was painful. Mia had always been able to bear the pain as silently as possible, but even once she was a full wolf, she felt the dull ache of the Change longer than the others. Perhaps it was the trade off.
Now a large, blonde wolf with green eyes, she walked out into the clearing and did a long circle to stretch her legs. She huffed a happy exhale before moving closer to Nick. She leaned down on her front paws a little, indicating the desire to play and to run.
Nick’s Change didn’t take too long, although he too felt the pain from it. A shake and a stretch helped the werewolf’s muscles loosen.
A brown wolf with chocolate eyes met her gaze. He didn’t wait and pounced on his wife. Then he backed away, waiting to see her next move.
The pounce drew a surprised sound from the wolf, then another happy one as if to declare ‘fun!’ It was fun. As a human, Mia always felt she had pent up energy that she couldn’t release. It helped when they entered battles, but despite the rumours the townspeople had of them, vikings did not fight every day of their lives. It was only when she was like this that she felt she could burn off every extra piece of energy she had.
She feinted right and then left before suddenly shooting off to the left at full speed. This was a chase. Catch her if you can, Nick.
Nick made a sound when Mia took off running. He knew how much energy his wife had pent up. Changing and running helped her release it, especially on days they didn’t fight, which usually outnumbered the days they did fight.
He chased Mia. She actually ran a little faster, but Nick was more agile as someone who had been in wolf form for longer than her. Nick kept running and leapt, missing Mia by a breath. The wolf let out a sound of frustration.
If a wolf could laugh with happiness, Mia made the closest sound to it. The wolf part of her did not want to lose. The human part knew the benefit of letting her husband catch her. Of course, the benefit would only come after she had give him a run for his money - and she planned to do just that.
She liked running like this with Nick because it was also like training - she learned how to better evade and move thanks to him.
They were coming up a familiar bend when she decided to try to do something that would reduce her speed, but might impress her husband. She suddenly changed directions and ducked under a fallen log.
Nick rolled his eyes at the laugh, although he knew he deserved it. He did not plan out his leap very well. The werewolf knew it.
He loved to run with the other wolves. It kept him in shape and in fighting form as a Viking. Plus, running with his wife worked up energy for a different sort of activity, one he rather enjoyed.
When he got to the bend, Nick wondered what his wife planned.
How she thought of this, she didn’t know, but the area here was a bit like an obstacle course, not that she knew the term herself. What she felt like doing was test them both. Nick had the advantage here, but Mia liked to be persistent and push herself. It wasn’t fun if something came too easily to you.
She made a huff of a sound meant to be another ‘catch me if you can’ challenge before taking off.
Nick shook his head and chased after his wife. He enjoyed running and chasing Mia, so the wolf didn’t try too hard to catch her at first. If he did, how would she get better as a wolf? Plus, the wolf enjoyed weaving and practicing his agility and speed too.
After about ten minutes, though, Nick pounced on Mia, bringing them both to the forest floor. His expression looked smug, even as a wolf. He moved off his wife and waited for her reaction.
Mia let out a little yelp just as a natural reaction, but when they were both standing, she let out a small grumble of a growl. It didn’t sound like she meant it though and she moved to rub her snout against his own muzzle as a sign of affection.
They had run enough now that she felt satiated in that way, though she looked to the small grove half hidden through the thicket. The perfect place to Change and satiate her other needs.
Nick grinned and headed to his own area to Change before he met her in the thicket for other fun. He returned the affection before he moved to his own area. The wolf still preferred privacy during his Changes and probably always would.
