Lady Sara was sitting next to the window that afforded her the best light as she worked on some stitching. Her other household duties were completed and the servants were completing their tasks as ordered. The project she was working on was a fine blanket intended for her daughter’s home when she was wed. Which Sara hoped would be soon. Her husband was in the process of negotiating with several families to determine the best match for their daughter. Though she would miss her daughter’s presence, it was time for her to be married and start raising her own babies.
Humming as she worked, she let her mind wander a bit, thinking about what it would be like to be a grandmother and hoping that Tandy would have an easier time than she did having children. She and Leonard had plans for many children and it caused her much heartache that she was never able to provide her husband with a son.
Leonard prided himself on being one of the wealthier gentlemen in town, but more so on his ability to broker deals. At the moment, he was in talks with several families about his daughter’s hand in marriage. So far, all of the fathers seemed interested in their sons marrying his precious Tandy. It was encouraging, but Leonard was not about to just marry his daughter off to any of them. No, Leonard was far too picky for that. Tandy was a beautiful, smart woman and his only child. She deserved the best and Leonard planned to give it to her.
Stepping into his home, Leonard greeted the servants with a simple nod before heading up stairs in search of his wife. Though they had been married for a number of years, Leonard still thought of her as the most beautiful, intelligent woman he’d ever met. She captured his attention at court years before and he’d never been interested in anyone else. It was arranged, but that never mattered to Leonard. The two had chemistry from the first conversation and it went far beyond just looks of which the two of them had plenty.
He spotted her in one of the rooms with the best lighting given the sheer amount of large windows. She was embroidering and Leonard braced a shoulder against the doorframe, ice cold blue eyes instantly softening as they watched her work. No, she had never been able to give him a son, but it didn’t make Leonard love her any less. Sure, he was disappointed, but it was something he’d gotten passed. Now they had Tandy’s upcoming engagement to look forward to.
“Hello, darling,” Leonard greeted, stepping inside and closing the door behind him. “How is Tandy’s blanket coming?” He claimed a seat across from her.
As always when her husband appeared, Sara greeted him with a bright smile. She knew that she was very lucky that she found a true love match with her marriage. Too many of her friends were married to men who were not as kind and loving as her Leonard and it was very important to her that Tandy not end up like that, something she knew her husband agreed with.
“Welcome home, dear,” she said. “It’s nearly done. Have you made any further progress on selecting a suitable match for her?” It was not something either of them cared to rush on such an important matter, but Sara was looking forward to planning a wedding.
Finding his daughter a match was the most important thing for Leonard. He wasn’t stupid enough to believe that true love might come along with that match, but he certainly hoped it would. Tandy was a tough young woman, determined and strong, it would take someone with just as much fire to keep up with her. Oh, she would make anyone a wonderful wife, but that person would have to match her drive. Her spirit and that might be a tad difficult.
“I have a few prospects, but Tandy’s a strong willed woman and whoever I match her with has to be able to keep up with that spirit,” Leonard replied honestly. “And we both know the chance of true love coming along with it is far more rare.”
“Yes, she is her mother’s daughter,” Sara joked. Motherhood had mellowed her some, but she shared her daughter’s strong will and spirit and was grateful that Leonard appreciated those qualities. “We need to find her a younger version of you.” Someone who would equally appreciate those traits and not expect a wife they could beat into submission.
She set aside her stitching and reached for her husband’s hand. “I have faith that you will make the right choice for our Tandy,” she said. “And I do look forward to becoming a grandmother.”
The comment coaxed a smirk to Leonard’s face. Yes, Tandy was indeed a lot like Sara and yes, Leonard appreciated that strength. That spirit. It was part of why he’d been drawn to Sara. Among other things of course. Sara was also intelligent and Snart enjoyed their conversations. She was the only woman he’d ever known who was capable of keeping up with him. “I am afraid I am a rare breed, Sara.” Most men wanted a woman that was submissive; Leonard was the exception.
Sara reached for his hand and Leonard eagerly accepted the touch. He gently squeezed her fingers as she spoke. “I promise I will do my best for our daughter,” Leonard promised. He didn’t release her hand and instead pressed a lingering kiss to the knuckles. The feeling of her skin on his was enough to spark his desire for the woman across from him.
“I do hope you’ll grant me the chance to kiss more than just your perfect hand tonight.”
Sara’s cheeks went pink at his words and she glanced around quickly to ensure none of the servants were within hearing range. “Leonard! What if someone heard you,” she chastised, though it was a weak protest. She quite enjoyed the physical aspects of her marriage, unlike many of the other ladies around town. If the gossip was to be believed, that was. Gossip was something that Sara tried to avoid.
“You are indeed a rare man,” she agreed. “I can only hope our daughter is half as happy with her match as I was with mine.”
Seeing her cheeks turn pink, Leonard couldn’t stop the smirk from appearing on his lips. He enjoyed making her blush. Sure, she’d chastised him, but he knew she secretly enjoyed the physical aspects of their marriage as much as he did. Despite her protest, he knew he would indeed be putting his lips on other aspects of her perfect physical form tonight.
“Even if they did, I hardly am one to care what others think of me,” he returned. “Especially when it comes to the woman I love.” Leonard was rebellious in that he preferred to play by his own rules even if those rules cost him trade deals and potentially tainted his reputation around buyers. He was a strong advocate for free will even if the time period around him called for restraint and control. To be fair, Leonard was all about the latter as well…just not when it came to Sara.
“Hence why I am the rare man you dub me as.” He reluctantly released her hand and stood, offering his arm instead. “She will be happy, Sara. I promise. I won’t match her with anyone that would give her anything less. Now, will you join me for dinner? Then maybe we can talk about the other places you want my lips.”
Taking her husband’s arm as she stood, Sara replied with a girlish giggle. “You are incorrigible, darling,” she said. “Yes, let us have dinner. We can discuss possible matches for Tandy later.” There were a number of good families in town with sons of marriageable age and despite Leonard’s rebellious nature, Sara knew that their daughter’s hand was much sought after.
“I love you,” she added, spontaneously leaning up to press a kiss to his cheek.
“It’s one of my best talents,” Leonard replied. Her giggle was rather cute and an actual smile briefly tugged at his lips. A rare moment for both of them to let down their guard. Such moments were some of his most treasured.
Her lips brushed his cheek and Leonard turned, leaning in to steal a brief kiss. “I love you too, Sara.”
