Sam and DJ had left that morning, and when he set foot in the house he was met with silence, which was a little depressing. He had gotten used to hearing those little feet come running to the door in excitement, and how he would shout to the rest of the house that Uncle Dean was home. He stood there quietly and set down his keys, hoping that soon enough they would have one of their own and instead of hearing Uncle Dean, he would be hearing Daddy’s home! The good thing about trying to have a baby meant sex happened more often, though honestly, sometimes he was just too damn tired for it. But, the downside was that every month that you weren’t successful, it was kind of a bummer. Not that they had been going through the process for that long, only a couple of months now, but he could only imagine the frustration that couples went through when it took them months to conceive. It was even more difficult due to Lisa being older, which he thought was bullshit, but you really couldn’t argue with biology. It was a lot harder on Lisa than on him, and so he had been trying to do sweet things to lift her spirits. Like today he was bringing home flowers for her and a box of ridiculously expensive chocolate from the local chocolate place. After all, they had been through so much crap in the past few weeks, she needed the extra attention more than ever.
“Lis, honey, I’m home!” Dean called out from the door, setting his keys down before venturing further inside, in search of his fiancée, holding the gifts behind his back.
Lisa’s period was usually due around the middle of the month. With her handy iPhone app, she was able to track it. So, when she woke up that morning and didn’t have any spotting or cramps? She felt her first real sparks of hope about being pregnant. Being that they were trying to get pregnant, Lisa had made sure to stock up on pregnancy tests. Though they hadn’t been trying very long, she, much like Dean, was impatient to conceive. Ever since meeting their daughter, it was impossible for them not to talk about her at least once during the day. Now, at this moment, she might actually be growing within Lisa.
Of course, on top of the excitement, there was fear. Last month, Lucifer was here and he’d kidnapped DJ, Dean’s nephew. It had been a week of fear and no one walked away unscathed from that experience. DJ and Sam had just finally headed home after staying with Dean and Lisa for a while. Yet, Lisa didn’t want to live in fear either.
Shaking, Lisa sat on the toilet lid and waited for the results. When she’d had Ben, it had been more from fear than excitement and sadly, it still was a decent mix of both. If things had been different last month, maybe Lisa wouldn’t have felt that way, but it was too late for that.. This time Dean would be with her through the whole experience though. It was planned and not a pleasant surprise, an unexpected outcome of a crazy, good night. They could handle whatever happened.
Okay, here it goes.
Lisa glanced at the test and barely managed to stifle a scream. It was positive! Lisa grinned, jumping up and yes, maybe doing a few dance steps in excitement. She could not wait to tell Dean, but, as much as she wanted to text him to come home immediately, she’d wait. She knew he’d worry like crazy if she just texted him to come home. No, she’d go to work, come home, clean up and by then, he’d be home.
And she’d done just that, but now she was in the living room, the test concealed under one of her magazines. She heard him come home and she felt a mixture of excitement and nerves. Here it goes.
“I’m in the living room!” Lisa called out. “You want to join me before you go grab a shower.”
Dean made his way to the living room and couldn’t help but notice she seemed to appear brighter than usual, but that was a good thing. Maybe there had been a sale at her favorite store and she snagged up a bunch of bargains. “Hey, babe. Just the girl I wanted to see.” He smiled warmly and when he was within arm's reach, he pulled both hands out from behind his back with a flourish, presenting her with the bouquet of flowers and the chocolates. “Got you a little special something.” He leaned down to brush his lips against hers in a tender kiss, moving to sit down on the couch next to her.
“What are we having for dinner? Do you want to go out or something?” Dean took a quick whiff under his arms to make sure he didn’t smell horrible and reached out to place his arm around her, holding her close. “I mean if you didn’t already start cooking or something. You know me, I’m good with whatever.”
Since they’d been trying to have a child, Dean brought her little gifts after work. She beamed at him and the sight of the chocolate along with the flowers. She leaned in and returned the kiss passionately before pulled back and accepted the gifts. Unable to help herself, she snuck a small chocolate from the box and popped it into her mouth. It was delicious, but she expected no less from her future husband. Placing the gifts on the table, she snuggled under Dean’s arm…after he checked he didn’t smell obviously.
Though, honestly, Lisa would have snuggled there anyway.
“We could go out for something,” Lisa offered. “I really haven’t had much time to think of dinner today.” Or really anything. She was just…extremely overwhelmed after the pregnancy test. Even now, she was having a hard time not just bursting out and telling him everything.
“But I have something more important to talk about than dinner,” Lisa replied, giving him a reassuring smile. She absolutely didn’t want Dean to think she was about to tell him something bad because it was obviously far from that.
“So, um, I realized my period was late this month,” Lisa began, looking up at Dean while attempting to keep her face as emotionless as possible. “So, I took a test. Obviously, there are no guarantees, but um, I took it and well-”
She reached under the magazine and took out the test (yes she’d cleaned it up after using it). Lisa turned back to him and gave him a huge grin, unable to keep it to herself any longer.
“It was positive. We’re pregnant.” Lisa held up the test to show him and found she was shaking all over again.
The past week or so had been kind of a shit show, and Dean was glad that it was finally starting to clear up. Or, at least that was how it seemed. He had only just started to believe that he didn’t need to worry about monsters going after the ones he loved, and now all of that had changed. He still needed to expect the unexpected, and you were never really prepared for much of anything that was thrown at you. For the longest time, he had been craving more excitement in the town, and now he was over it all.
“Okay, I can hop in the shower, get dressed and we can head out somewhere. Absolutely not a problem.” He assured her with a smile, turning to press a kiss to the top of her head. He could have offered to cook dinner himself, but he wasn’t really in the mood to bother, much preferring to relax and let someone else do the work. “Excuse me?” Dean gasped in mock horror, “there is absolutely nothing more important to talk about than dinner.” Still, he paused to let her continue, his fingers playing idly in her hair.
It wasn’t until she mentioned her period that he moved to sit up, listening to what she had to say with more focused intent. He hadn’t even realized it was that time of the month, his schedule off, due to what had gone on last week. When she pulled the test out from under the magazine, he took it into his hand to study it closely, his hand trembling as he did so. Yes. It was clear as day. Lisa was pregnant.
Dean turned to look at her with tears in his eyes, words failing him at the moment. He moved to set the test down on the table and leaned in, taking her face in his hands so he could kiss her passionately. His thumb brushed along her jaw and he pulled back slightly, his forehead resting against hers, letting out a laugh. “Okay, I stand corrected. This was definitely more important than dinner.”
Dean took the test, green eyes studying it critically, and Lisa waited. She could see the test shaking in his grasp and she couldn’t blame him for the reaction. Her hand shook too as she waited anxiously for the results earlier in the day. How could they not be nervous? They were both older and having children didn’t get easier with age, but they both wanted one some badly, especially after meeting Charlie.
His gaze finally leveled with hers again and there were tears clearly shining in his eyes. Lisa felt tears well up in her own eyes in response. He put the test on the table, cupped her face gently, and leaned in to kiss her. Lisa returned it just as passionately. She was so happy she could give him a child, a little Winchester, but more so, she was happy for both of them. They could be parents together finally. As he pulled back, forehead resting against hers, Lisa grasped his hand tightly in hers and laughed.
“I thought you might think so,” Lisa replied, smiling still playing on her lips. “Being a dad is kind of a big deal, you know?”
“Yeah, it is. I know.” Dean nodded in agreement, squeezing her hand in return. It was a slightly bittersweet moment as he thought back to recent events, and how brokenhearted DJ was when he thought he would never see his father again. They were going to have a child, and he was no longer certain of his ability to keep them both safe. His thumb brushed over the palm of her hand and he took a deep breath. Maybe he could talk to Cas about some kind of a protection spell for her.
There was a part of him that was angry he wasn’t more excited, that Lucifer had taken away some of the joy he should have been feeling at that moment and he wished he could stab the son of a bitch with an angel blade, over and over again. “I can’t believe we’re really going to have a baby…” he whispered thinly, reaching out to place his hand against her stomach. “I wonder if that’s our little Charlie in there.”
Lisa knew it wasn’t the best timing. After everything that happened recently, it was a bittersweet moment for them both. Dean was probably doubting himself given how easily Lucifer had captured Chloe and his nephew. Truthfully, it scared Lisa too. If Lucifer came back again, could they keep their family safe? It was an unanswerable question right now, but that didn’t mean it didn’t weigh on both of their minds even when they both should have been ecstatic
Lisa squeezed his hand again before he pulled back and, instead, placed it on her stomach. Obviously, Lisa didn’t know if it was a boy or a girl for sure, but a big part of her believed that, yes, it was Charlie. She placed her hand over his and offered him a smile.
“I obviously can’t tell for sure, but yeah, I really think it is, Dean.”
“Well, duh,” he scoffed with a playful roll of his eyes, a smile on his face. “I know you can’t tell for sure, babe.” He looked at her with adoration, the whole conversation still replaying in his head as he sat there. He was going to be a father, they were going to have a child, and their world as they knew it would be forever changed for the better. It had barely been two years ago when he arrived, feeling hopeless as ever, and now, he just couldn’t believe what his life had become. “Given this very exciting news, I think this definitely calls for a celebration dinner. Let me shower real quick and I’ll be back down.” He leaned over and kissed her forehead before pulling away, almost tripping over his feet as he ran up the stairs excitedly. “I love you!” Dean called out from the stairs, having forgotten to say the words.
