That's not it. There are a lot of people who'll see him as only a symbol, that's so. It's true of all gunslingers, as it should be: what we represent counts for much more than who we personally are and we all know it. But those people? They're not at all aware of Roland's...misfortunes, and it'd be a severe failing on my part if I didn't keep it that way. Symbols aren't supposed to suffer. Those who know are close enough to him that they ought to think more of him than only that. Is it not the same with Peter? I reckon not, if your world is so invested in folk all considering themselves equal, you'd have no need for symbols.
