Logan still didn’t tend to sleep over at V’s and Leo’s. He liked his space and his sleep schedule differed from theirs. And when he did, he stayed in the guest room. When he woke in his bed, it was to Toast meowing, not unusual as she liked to eat food. But, the urgency made him sit up faster. Okay, a little girl sat at the edge of the bed and seemed very interested in playing with a cat who wanted to be left alone.
After Toast fled under the bed, Logan started talking to the little girl. Through some back and forth he figured out her name was Lily. And she had two daddies. Logan was one and Leo was the other.
“I want to go see Daddy! He lets me eat the junk food cereal when you’re not around.” Well, okay then. That certainly sounded like Leo…and Logan. Logan texted Leo and said, “I’m coming over. Make coffee. You’re going to need it. I need it. I’m bringing…our daughter.”
“Let’s go see Leo and then we can figure out breakfast.” Okay, Logan could handle this. He almost forgot to feed his cat, but remembered at the last minute. To her bowl he added the rest of the can of Fancy Feast tuna.
Lily happily held Logan’s hand as they walked, before she demanded a piggy back ride. He knocked at the door and waited for Leo to open the door.
Logan’s text made no sense. Even after crawling out of bed and into a quick shower, it still made no sense. Leo had been here long enough to know that random kids just showed up once in a while but still! What??
With wet hair standing up everywhere he went to the kitchen to make a giant pot of coffee. While he waited for Logan to show up he pondered whether or not to make it a little Irish. He was still thinking about it when the knock came to the door.
Leo opened the door and stared. There was a cute little munchkin on Logan’s back and she burst into giggles when she saw Leo. “Uh…”
“Daddy!” The little girl squirmed to get down off of Logan’s back, so Logan kneeled down to ensure her safety. She started speaking fast. “I only wanted to play with the kitty but she didn’t want to play with me and only came back out when Dad fed her and I’m hungry and you always let me eat the sweet cereal Dad only lets me have as a treat.”
Logan looked at Leo and mouthed ‘Coffee. Stat.’ The little one had wrapped herself around Leo’s legs and again said, “I’m hungrrrry.”
And if Leo made his coffee Irish at the moment, he definitely would hear about it from Logan.
Leo couldn’t help but grin. Yeah. That was his kid. He reached down to pry her off his leg and scoop her up. “You’re in luck. I have Lucky Charms.”
He turned the grin on Logan as he caught the other daddy with his free arm to place a calming kiss to his cheek. He kept it brief, however, if only to get the little girl to the sugar. “Coffee is already made. Whiskey is in the cabinet.”
Logan didn’t drink that much these days, but damn those words never sounded better to him. “You’re a Godsend.” At the cheek kiss he grinned, and squeezed the shoulder closer to him.
After Logan got to the kitchen, he poured coffees for both of them and added a splash of whiskey to both as well. Then he prepared a bowl of cereal for the little girl.
“I’m Lily.” The little girl seemed to realize she should remind them of her name. Logan’s heart dropped, and, since he still had whiskey in arm’s reach, added a little more and then passed Leo his mug. Of course this child would have Lily’s name. The girl who broke his heart and nearly got Veronica killed as she tried to solve Lily’s death.
“Is Dad okay, Daddy?”
“Hello, Lily.” Leo knew what name would mean to both Logan AND Veronica. Working with the FBI for as long as he had he could keep his reaction from his face, fortunately.
He sat her down at the kitchen table, realized she was pretty short then went in search of books or something to boost her up. “Dad is ridiculous on a normal day, sweety. He’s fine.”
Logan watched Leo struggle to find something for their daughter to sit on to be high enough to reach the table. “She can sit on one of our laps?” he offered, unsure if Leo would find something comfortable and safe.
“I’m fine. Really.” Logan took a gulp of coffee. “So, what are some things you like, besides sugary cereal?”
“I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to end up with a lap full of sticky milk,” Leo said as he came back with a small stack of legal books. They were placed on the chair then Lily got lifted HIGH in the air before she was sat on the books.
The action made her erupt into laughter. “Rainbow unicorns!” she pronounced. “And pizza. Cookies. Chicken nuggets. Motsarulla sticks. Mashed tatoes. Kittens.” She gasped. “Can I have a kitten?!”
Logan groaned, wondering why he asked such a broad question to a toddler. An adorable toddler, but still a toddler. At least Leo fixed the chair question. “I should run to Target and get a proper chair.” In case this turned a bit more permanent.
“Okay, let’s focus on the cereal first. Then we can see how hungry you are, but I bet your dad and I can make chicken nuggets, mashed potatoes, and…mozzarella sticks for lunch. Along with some fruits or veggies.” Logan wasn’t about to have their daughter only eat junk food. And, before she could complain, Logan added, “You can choose which veggies and/or fruit.”
“Let’s not panic buy,” Leo said as he went to take the coffee Logan had made. “If anything I’d say check the thrift stores first.” Because he didn’t think they could return anything if this wasn’t permanent.
“That’s a weird menu, kiddo. I like it.” Leo smirked at Lily while she got started on the cereal. While she was occupied with that, he spoke quietly to Logan.
“Take deep breaths.”
Logan couldn’t help the panic he felt. A kid? Sure, maybe in a distant future, but given his parents, Logan didn’t know if a kid made sense. “Good plan. I’ll check a thrift store and maybe see if someone on the network has one we can borrow.” He breathed at Leo’s instructions.
“It’s not unlike a menu you might request,” Logan teased Leo and leaned over to kiss his cheek. “Fiiiine. I’ll eat some carrots and ranch dip too and some cherry tomatoes.” Logan nodded, accepting the combo.
“Ask on the net,” Leo suggested. “There are people who’ve had kids here that have grown up some. They might have leftovers.”
He smirked for the kiss but sobered quickly. “What are we gonna tell Veronica? She’s still not great after losing her own kid.”
To Lily, he threw out ideas. “What about spaghetti or lasagna?”
Logan was already pulling out his phone and asking on the network. Hopefully someone replied.
At the question, Logan looked at Leo. “I mean, I figure it’s a solid chance she’ll find it hilarious. And, if she doesn’t, we’ll figure it out. But, we definitely can’t hide Lily, especially since I don’t have space for her at my apartment…”
Lily shook her head. “Maybe spaghetti and lasagna tomorrow. With meatballs!”
“With meatballs,” Leo agreed.
He slid an arm around Logan’s waist as he sighed. “We’ll figure it out.”
