[*Seriously, offing Daniel in this post. Don't worry, he gets better.]
Wednesdays were Daniel's day off from classes, and he typically used that time for grading since Vala was at work. Today, rather than grading at home, he had packed up his laptop and the paperwork and headed to the coffee shop so that he would have a steady supply of caffeine and sandwiches while taking care of the midterms he was procrastinating on.
It was actually decently warm out, so it seemed like every business was cleaning windows or changing out decorations. Even the city was in on things, with crews putting up Christmas decorations while they could. Then there was the scaffolding that had been up for a few weeks now, for some sort of repair on the building.
Daniel, like everyone else, ducked under the bar to walk down the path under the scaffolding, phone in hand as he did, replying to a text from a student. He heard a yell, and then a scream as he came out from under it, and then a sharp blast of pain.
Then, there was a dead Daniel on the ground, blood pouring from his head, with a large cinderblock laying nearby.
