Who: Kate Bishop, Lucky, and Rachel Roth
What: Kate’s arrival
When: Circa 10/16
Where: Street
Warning: None (low/none)
Status: Completed via Gdoc
Kate kicked the car door shut, Lucky at her heels, and pizza boxes in her arms. She had her Hawkeye uniform on under her trench coat, along with her longbow and quiver, sunglasses resting on top of her head. She jogged up the steps to Clint’s brownstone and rushed through the front door…
But then she wasn’t inside the building. She wasn’t even in New York anymore, that she could tell. It wasn’t even nighttime. Kate glanced down where Lucky was still at her feet, and felt the weight of the warm, heavy pizza boxes in her hands.
“Uhhhhh… Toto, I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore,” she said, giving the dog another glance before looking around the street. There were shops, cars, trees? It didn’t look like New York. Where were the skyscrapers? Why wasn’t it night??
---
“It’s close enough to Kansas, though, from what I see,” Rachel said, as she heard the girl talking to her dog. Rachel had just arrived, had only been there long enough to be greeted by the welcoming committee and discover that Dick Grayson was in town as well. Which was weird, because he definitely hadn’t been in Indiana the last time she had seen him.
“You’re new, too?” she asked, arching an eyebrow. “Oh, good. Because this town definitely needs more teenagers.” She was including herself in that assessment. She wasn’t judging Kate for her age, because then she’d have to judge herself for her age as well.
“I’m Rachel Roth,” she offered.
---
Lucky gave a couple of happy barks, his tail wagging and his one eye blinking brightly up at the other girl. He moved closer, carefully, sniffing at her to try and figure out what she was all about.
Kate spun to look at the girl, but didn’t raise the bow. She was definitely off her game, still holding the pizza box in her hands. “If it’s looking for teenagers, it’s off by a couple of years,” Kate said, breaking into an anxious smile.
“Kate. Kate Bishop. Where? How? What?” She asked, stuttering just slightly.
--
“Lucky for you, then,” she said. “No need for a guardian.” Though with Dick being here, she knew she’d at least have a good guardian. She could definitely do worse than Dick Grayson. “Nice to meet you, Kate,” she offered, before focusing on the dog for a moment. “You have a dog,” she observed. “What’s his name?”
Kate’s questions then registered. “I have no answers to any of that,” she said, softly. “I just arrived here myself. I was supposed to be on a plane with Donna Troy’s body and her family, but… now I’m here.”
She wasn’t completely sure why or how. Even with everyone trying to be supportive and helpful on the network.
---
"Yeah, I'm not sure... well, I suppose I've been accused of needing a guardian before... but not lately, anyway." Actually, it was Clint who really needed a guardian sometimes, but that was neither here nor there.
"Lucky," Kate responded at the question of the dog's name. And Lucky, to his credit, turned to look at Kate questioningly. "Oh, hush, she just asked your name. Don't look so surprised that people are talking about you."
The one-eyed, pizza-dog turned back to Rachel, tail wagging furiously, and stuck his cold, wet nose wherever he could reach. He loved people.
Kate had no idea who Donna Troy was. She cleared her throat. "I was headed to my partner's place... delivering pizza. And then? How is it daytime? It was dark just minutes ago."
---
Rachel reached down and patted the pizza-dog’s head. Lucky, his name was. “Who’s a good boy,” she murmured, as she scratched behind the dog’s ear. She then looked up at the woman. “I have no idea,” she answered, honestly. “Apparently we’re all here against our will, and we can’t leave. We’re apparently prisoners of some sort.” She shrugged slightly at this.
She was unsure of herself, here in Madison Valley. And when she was unsure or uncertain about a situation, her powers tended to get a little out of control. She desperately hoped they wouldn’t right now. She didn’t want to hurt anyone, not yet anyway.
Especially not this Kate Bishop person. Kate seemed friendly. She also seemed as confused about being here as Rachel was.
---
Lucky sat down, looking one-eyed up at this woman with the magic scritching fingers, and grinning in his dog way. After a moment his jaw opened just a little, and his tongue fell out of the side of his mouth.
“Huh. Okay. Yeah, not loving that,” Kate said, frowning just a little as she turned to look around the street. As if she expected someone to come bouncing out and yelling Surprise!... but of course, no one did. Kate swallowed, then turned back to the younger woman. Teenage woman?
“And now I’m wandering around some prison town with my dog and way too much pizza.”
---
“There’s such a thing as too much pizza?” Rachel asked. “And what kind of pizza are we talking about? I may be able to be persuaded to take some off your hands.” Rachel had absolutely no shame when it came to pizza. “I can take some to Dick. When I find him. As a thank you for being my guardian pizza.”
It was a thing. Really. While she wasn’t positive Dick even liked pizza, she’d be more than willing to take some off Kate’s hands.
“I hate this prison town,” she decided.
----
“Touche.” Kate could really just shove the pizza in a fridge and eat it for days. But still… she’d have to have a fridge. Right now she was still trying to figure out what was going on in this town. Would she need to get a hotel room? Stay on a park bench? Find a place?
“Oh! Yeah, sure,” Kate said, offering up the box. She opened the lid so that Rachel could see inside. “It’s just pepperoni. Boring, but delicious. Food of my soul.”
Then Kate cocked her head to the side a little. “Why do you hate this town?”
---
“Pepperoni is delicious,” she agreed, as she took the box from Kate. Pepperoni was likely one of her favorite pizza toppings, honestly. She wasn’t too terribly picky when it came to pizza, though. Just no mushrooms or olives.
Even then, she’d eat it. Pizza was pizza.
“It isn’t San Francisco,” she answered. “And my friends aren’t here. Except Dick. I am glad he’s here.” At least she knew someone here. That was better than nothing. “Though I’m sure I’ll grow to like it, as it seems we’re stuck here for the time being.”
---
“You’re welcome to take some. I’ll just grab a slice and you can have the rest. Take it home to your family,” or whoever it was she was staying with. Dick?
“I was in New York,” Kate responded. “Just like… seconds ago. I’m kinda loving the random space and time jump, though. At least this place keeps you on your toes.”
---
Rachel grinned when the woman -- Kate -- told her she could have the rest of the pizza. She had seen how much Dick could eat. She could also do some damage to a pizza as well. “Hey, thanks!” Maybe this town wasn’t too bad after all.
Though she thought maybe she should be a bit wary of taking food from a stranger.
“It definitely seems to do just that, doesn’t it?”
---
Kate set down the coffee she was carrying, then opened the pizza box and took a slice out. After that… interdimensional travel?... She wasn’t super hungry. But the girl could pretty much always put away a slice. Then she passed the box over to Rachel and picked up her coffee again. “All right, I’m gonna try and figure out where to go next,” she offered. There had to be someone around here willing to give her a hand, right?
“Are you good?” She asked Rachel. After all, she was still a superhero. She wanted to make sure that she wasn’t leaving someone in a lurch.
---
Rachel nodded in response to Kate’s question, “I have someone coming to take me to the apartments. Dick is there, apparently he has an extra bedroom already. Which is super useful.” She shrugged slightly at this, then beamed at Kate when the woman handed her the pizza box. “Thanks for the pizza,” she told the woman.
“At least I’ll arrive at my guardian’s with a peace offering. A Hey, thanks for taking me in gift.”
Not that she thought Dick really needed a peace offering. She was sure he would have taken her in even if she hadn’t arrived with a pizza.
----
“That’s good.” Kate grinned, nodding. “It was nice meeting you, Rachel. I hope we’ll cross paths again soon.” She felt a little bad leaving this teenager alone, but the girl said she was good, right? And Kate had to take care of her own confusion, too. Put on your own mask on before helping others?
Kate was sure she’d see the girl again. And maybe then, she and Lucky would have a better grip on… all of this.
