Mitch wasn't exactly social on a good day, which most people who knew him -- even in Madison Valley, where he didn't really know most people -- would readily be able to tell you. He was, however, a masochist who tended to put himself in more social situations than anybody would expect -- case in point, the bar.
It wasn't out of any particular desire to people watch, or make new friends, or any of the many other reasons people went to bars. (Well, mostly. He'd drunk himself stupid over his mistakes with Jamie a few times.) No, it was out of... the best way he could put it was out of some not quite understandable desire to pretend he was more social than he was.
Because to actually be more social than he was, it would require him to like people in the first place. As a whole, not a big fan.
Tonight mostly just involved Mitch nursing a beer and pondering his life yet again, so okay, yeah, maybe it was one of the reasons people went to bars, after all. Nobody ever accused him of being honest with himself.
He gave a slight smile and a nod to the guy who sat a couple seats down, as though in apology for the fact that he actually had to in some way deal with Mitch.
