Who: Shuri and Michael
What: drinks etc.
Where: The Electric Lady
When: Thurs. evening
Warnings:mentions of hooking up
Shuri slowly got used to her new schedule. Unfortunately, she spent less time at the lab, but she again liked both her jobs. Once her body became used to her new schedule, she could add time back into her schedule for the lab. As it was, she only worked about 15 hours a week for the vineyard and her normal 30-35 at the arcade. The one thing she didn’t have as much time for these days, though? Cooking. She made a bunch of batch meals, so Nat or Yelana could defrost as needed on nights when Shuri didn’t have time to cook.
But, Thursdays? Thursday evenings and Friday mornings gave her time to have a social life. And, she didn’t think a drink or two with the attractive newcomer seemed like a bad way to spend her evening.
Shuri napped for a bit Thursday afternoon once she put in time for the vineyard, and woke up with time to whip up a casserole, before she showered and got ready.
When she got to the bar, she didn’t see anyone she recognized yet. Shuri ordered a club soda while she waited for Michael.
***
Was Michael getting used to this place? Hell no. Did he want to? That was an even bigger negative. But, he didn’t have any choice in the matter, as usual, so he decided to make the best of the grand they’d given him. In his world that meant drinking. It was a bonus that he’d be drinking with pretty people.
Tonight he was meeting up with that girl Shuri at someplace called The Electric Lady. Didn’t sound like his kind of place, but so long as they had beer, whiskey, and tequila he could make do.
He had managed to replace his cowboy hat since he hadn’t been wearing his when this place ganked him here. Being without a hat made him feel naked so that had been a priority. He thought he’d stand out, but when he walked into the bar he realized this place wasn’t so bad. Looking around he spotted Shuri then made his way to where she was.
“Hey,” he said by way of hello.
***
“Hello Michael,” she replied in her accented English. She studied him for a moment, finding him rather attractive. In movies, she knew women flirted by removing someone’s hat, but Shuri only smiled.
The band played bluegrass. But Shuri didn’t want to order a drink until she knew whether or not Michael wanted to stay.
“Would you like to stay here or find a different bar?” Shuri liked all of the bars for different reasons. “I like your hat.”
**£
Never touch a man’s hat. Not unless you really knew him well. You could kick his truck. Play with his dog. Even take one of his beers, but his hat was entirely off limits.
Michael wasn’t fussy about music so he made himself comfortable. The atmosphere here was his style, which was more important than what was playing in his opinion. “This place is fine and thanks.” He smirked as he slid his finger under the front of the brim by way of saluting her. “Found it in a second hand store. Already broke in.”
He raised his hand to the bartender. “So what are you drinkin’?”
***
Shuri understood not touching things which didn’t belong to her. She certainly made such a rule in her lab, which people followed, not only because she held the ‘princess’ title, but also because it made fucking sense. Don’t touch things you didn’t own, and you were far less likely to accidentally muck up an experiment or a device.
“Well good find. The hat suits you and makes you look even more hot.” She smirked in response.
At the question, Shuri thought for a moment. She didn’t desire wine. Beer tended to make her full halfway through a pint, so she rarely ordered beer. “I think I’ll take a scotch on the rocks.” While she didn’t often choose scotch, the smokiness spoke to her this evening. Plus, she could sip it without downing it too fast, like a margarita or vodka type cocktail.
This time she rested her head on her fingers and asked, “You?”.
***
“Hot, huh.” Michael got a rakish smirk on his face to hear that. His ego was big enough but he always appreciated having it stroked.
When the bartender got to them Michael gave Shuri a wink. “Scotch on the rocks for the lady, and easy on the rocks. Another beer and a shot for me. Put it on my tab.” The bartender gave him a suspicious look then went to make their drinks.
“I can appreciate a lady with good taste in alcohol.”
***
Shuri laughed at his expression. “Yes. I know you’re hot. You know you’re hot. And if I compliment you much more, I don’t know if your head will fit through the door.” She mostly joked, though, and offered a smirk to accompany her words.
As he ordered, she went to correct the ice amount, but figured how much less ice would a bartender actually remove? She listened to his order and inwardly wondered how beer and a shot tasted together. At least she knew scotch tasted good.
“It’s nice to be appreciated. And, you’ll find, I have good taste in most things.” This time, she winked as she spoke.
The bartender passed her the scotch and she took a small sip. Yup. She picked a good drink. And then noticed the amount of ice. Inwardly she swore. Good thing she didn’t work until 1 tomorrow.
***
“Aw see, you haven’t seen all of me yet.” Michael grinned. “You can’t say you know how hot I really am. So I expect more compliments.” He too was joking, but it was also a thinly veiled invitation.
“Obviously,” he commented on her good taste. “Look at the company you’re keeping.” He grinned more but this time added a chuckle.
“So how long you been here?”
***
At the invitation, Shuri laughed. “I look forward to seeing more of you later, then.” Did she have a glint in her eye? Maybe. “I might even compliment you more.”
She rolled her eyes, but couldn’t hold back her giggle. “It seems a little early but I guess you’re good company.”
At the question, Shuri thought for a moment. “Early April. So five months? Where were you before the Dome brought you here?”
***
“Sweet.” That was taken care of. “My place is pretty empty.” He didn’t know what her living situation was, but it was just him in that apartment.
“Anything interesting happen in those five months?” He wanted to know what to expect from this place. “Roswell,” was his answer to where he was from.
***
She nodded. “Your place sounds far more empty than mine. I live with a friend from home and her newly arrived sister.” She smirked at the way he voiced the invitation.
“Well. A portal to an alternate Madison Valley opened, which was a far less fantastic version of here. Sometimes fun things happen, like a water park appears or an orgy. And sometimes you go through a portal and suddenly find dinosaurs on the warpath.” She drank a little more of her drink.
“Is that the town in New Mexico? Something about aliens? I am not from the States.” She assumed her accent gave that fact away.
***
“Not from the states?” Michael feigned shock. “Say it ain’t so! I’d have pegged you for Chicago.” He grinned knowing he was being ridiculous.
“Water parks, orgies, and dinosaurs. Oh my.” That seemed to call for a drink, and he drained his beer only to ask for another.
He nodded for another one but since Shuri hadn’t finished hers he didn’t insist on another round for her. “Something like that, yeah.” But he wasn’t going to confirm or deny the alien thing.
***
She laughed. “Yeah. I know. I totally sound like a Chicagoan. Not at all like sub-Saharan Africa.” Shuri sipped at her drink, at this point about halfway through it. Thankfully she didn’t feel the effects yet.
And when he downed his drink she felt kind of bad for how she answered his question. “Things like fight night usually happen once a month.”
Shuri nodded. “Understood.” She understood people not wanting to discuss their pasts. Just look at Bucky. Thinking of her surrogate brother made her take a large sip of her drink. This meant her glass was more ¾ gone.
“So. You like cowboy hats. Beer with shots.” She eyed him with a smirk. “Sex. Anything else I should know about?”
***
Playing the guitar. Putting together pieces of alien technology. But those were really personal things Michael didn’t share with anyone he wasn’t emotionally involved with. He was a master as keeping things behind mind, though so he just smiled at Shuri in a manner that said he was picturing her sitting there without her clothes.
“Chicks from sub-Saharan Africa with Chicago accents.”
***
Shuri could tell he hid some personal things, but she didn’t press. They just met after all. At his expression, she pretended to act shocked. “Why Sir, are you picturing me naked?” But instead she laughed and finished her drink.
“Well, good thing I’m a chick from sub-Saharan Africa with a Chicago accent.” She shook her head. “I guess it’s a good thing I like guys in cowboy hats from New Mexico.” Shuri looked at her drink for a second.
***
Yeah, he liked Shuri. She seemed as casual about sex as he was. Michael grinned. Tonight was going to be a great night. “You wanna get outta here?” he asked. Drinking no longer sounded as interesting as it had.
***
Shuri nodded. She liked Michael and casual sex sounded pretty good to her right now. And, hopefully Michael looked better naked. Yup, tonight should be fun. “Lead the way.” As they stood, she playfully smacked his butt.
