"It's just the truth," Mary replied, returning the smile. "And your friend, Max, sounds like one hell of a chick for sure. I can see how you earned the title of Smart Alec, but even without the connotation, it fits you." Mary wasn't sure if her name fit her; her parents had named her before she could even comprehend it. Somehow Alec's fit him though and she honestly couldn't picture calling him anything else, especially not X5-494. Numbers were so impersonal and Alec didn't deserve that.
Mary reached across the table and patted his hand briefly. "It's okay. You didn't really know me and I'm-well-we both know what I am." Mary would never go after Alec; she was a hunter since birth, but Alec wasn't evil. Coming to Madison Valley had opened her eyes to supernaturals being good; it showed her the world was not as black and white as she was raised to believe it was.
"I can't blame you. That's all I'm saying. Especially being hunted back home, which is awful. You didn't know how people would react to what you are here. You had to be careful."
