Who: Owen Harper and Luke Crain
What: Random
Where: Near the college
When: Friday
Warnings: Not likely, aside from mentions of drug use in narrative
Status: Closed

As much as he really was a homebody, Luke didn't like to stay home. Not during the day when Theo wasn't there. Sitting in the apartment they shared staring at the walls gave him too much time to think. And when he sat around thinking, his thoughts went to dark, dangerous places.

When Theo had work, Luke tended to go out and wander around town. He spent a lot of time at the park, but the same thing happened there. Or he ran into literal ghosts, like that day he'd met Xavier. He still didn't know what to think about that, because Xavier wasn't like the other ghosts. He definitely wasn't like the ghosts of Hill House.

Luke banished those thoughts, but then his mind turned to how a drink would help stop those thoughts. Just one drink and he could have a few minutes of relative peace. A hit of heroin would quiet his mind for hours on end. But no. That was the past. he didn't do that anymore.

He sighed and looked around. "Excuse me,' he said to another man he saw walking nearby. He didn't seem too much in a hurry, and Luke wouldn't keep him long anyway. "Where am I?" He'd been walking and had lost track of where he was. It was still better than getting drunk or high.

The weather was nice enough that Owen didn't mind walking around campus a bit, or rather, didn't mind ranging a little way away from it. It wasn't for exercise, it was for letting himself deal with all the thoughts that tended to run through his head sometimes.

He wasn't so distracted that he didn't hear someone speak to him, though. And he recognized the guy instantly -- Luke, one of his speed dates. "Not far from the Hanover campus," Owen replied. "I'm guessing it's not where you meant to go, huh?"

Seemed like it wasn't, at least. And Luke looked like something was on his mind, too.

Luke wasn't the best with faces, or putting a name to a face, but given the easy way the guy responded to him he figured they had met. he was good with context clues, most of the time.

"No, I didn't intend to go anywhere near the campus," he said. "I was just out walking." His brain made the connection to speed dating, but really, once he'd met Micah he'd forgotten about everyone else.

"I'm sorry, I know I know you, but I don't remember your name."

"Owen," he said with a smile. "And you're Luke. How've you been?"

Because he'd heard enough of Luke's story to know that life probably wasn't easy for him on a daily basis, and if it was a bad day then that probably explained why he was looking so... not pensive, but something close.

And Owen wasn't as much of an asshole as he pretended to be. He did care about people, most of the time.

"One day at a time," Luke said. That's what they'd stressed at rehab, every single time he'd gone. Take life one day, one hour, one minute, at a time. That was all anyone could really expect.

Get through the current minute and then worry about getting through the next. Sometimes that was easy, sometimes not so much.

"I'm doing okay, though." As long as neither Theo nor Micah got sent home, he'd be fine. He didn't know what he'd do if he lost either of them.

"How have you been, Owen?" he asked, making sure to use his name to try and cement it in his mind.

"I've been good," Owen said with a shrug. "Nothing much going on other than work and lots of it, but that's... actually something I'm used to, just in a different context."

Because you didn't really have slow, boring days with Torchwood. if you did? You weren't doing your job anywhere near right.

"How about you?" he asked. "Things been good?" He wouldn't say he was concerned about Luke, no, but he wasn't a complete asshole. He knew how to be genuine in a conversation.

"Reasonably so," Luke said. He really didn't have a whole lot to complain about. The ghost problem he had wasn't unique to Madison so there was no point complaining about that.

"I met a ghost. He seemed nice." Which was an unusual turn of events. But he supposed there had to be a few decent ghosts out there. They couldn't all be bad news.

"Well, at least he was reasonably nice," Owen said. "I imagine unpleasant ghosts are a right pain."

His experience with the strange and unusual didn't lean towards that, but he couldn't imagine every ghost being pleasant -- or unpleasant, to be fair. They were probably rather varied like that.

Luke nodded. "Most ghosts are not nice,' he said. he felt like he spoke from a place of authority. Maybe he'd only ever encountered the ghosts from Hill House, but still. He felt those ghosts were representative of all ghosts because they were what he knew.

"I don't like them very much." But Xavier was okay. Luke actually sort of liked him.

"Then it's a good thing you're here," Owen said. "At least any ghosts that show up here are probably going to be decent enough."

Because it didn't seem like the dome would allow any truly terrible ghosts outside of maybe the times everything went a little strange in town.

Alright, a little stranger than usual.

"I hope so," Luke said. Except the bowler hat ghost was there. Never far from him. And the bowler hat ghost was not friendly. He wasn't nice at all. But no one else seemed to see him. Not even Theo.

"I should get home before Theo starts texting me asking where I am. It was nice to see you again, Owen."

That got a laugh out of Owen. "I'll let you get going, then," he said with a smile. "See you around, though."

He wasn't very good at making friends, but he was good at being friendly with people. And face it, he'd had friendships start from less.
