Ronon had never been to a place like WalMart before he came to Madison. Bix box stores didn't really exist on Sateda, or in the Pegasus Galaxy. He quite liked the convenience of it, because he could get most anything he needed at WalMart. Except shoes, and the clothing selection for someone as big as Ronon was rather small. Other than clothes and shoes, though, WalMart was a one stop shop for him.

He had a cart full of items he probably didn't need. WalMart was also a place for impulse buying.

"I know you," he said as he walked up an aisle toward someone. He didn't know Murphy's name, but he recognised him from Fight Club. Ronon had been participating in fight club since he'd arrived back in Madison several months earlier. He knew, or at least recognised, most of the fighters.

Murphy glanced up at the sound of someone talking to him. "Dude, almost everybody knows me, I've been here forever," he said. "But... wait, yeah, I know you too. Fight night. Can't remember your name, but..."

He shrugged, not particularly fussed about it.

"Name's Murphy," he said. "And I'm really not kidding. Twenty bucks says I know somebody who knows you." Odds were pretty good on that, actually. For all he wasn't incredibly social, Murphy had been around long enough to not be completely antisocial.

"Ronon," he offered. Last names didn't seem important. "You made it almost to the end, didn't you?" Which was baffling to Ronon. The guy was barely as thick as a stick, and hardly looked like a worthy fighting opponent. But he had moves, which sometimes mattered more than strength.

"I have to admit, I would have bet against you." Ronon didn't have a problem saying what he was thinking. Even if it wasn't flattering.

"Runner up, yeah. And trust me, most people would bet against me." Murphy shrugged; it was the truth, he couldn't argue with it. "I'm used to people underestimating me. Sometimes it pisses me off, sometimes it's useful."

Like with fight night. He could fight like hell, had been doing so as long as he could remember, but he'd trained a lot since showing up in Madison Valley. He owed Octavia for that, he really did. It was because of her that his fighting style had become less scrappy, more focused.

Considering who she'd been trained by? He knew he was lucky to have been trained by her.

"People expect me to be a capable fighter," Ronon said. because of course they did. he was 6'6" and built like an ox. he was all height and muscle, and he could sure as hell pack a punch. "They're not disappointed."

Except when he went down early in a Fight Club fight. He knew he was sometimes up against people who were from other places, people who had been training to fight their entire lives. he should still be able to pummel them, and that just wasn't the case.

"You definitely have an advantage. You look like you'd run screaming if someone punched you in the gut."

That got a laugh out of Murphy. "Maybe, but anybody who knows me from back home would start laughing at that. I mean, they'd totally expect me to fight back but they'd expect me to fight dirty and without a whole lot of finesse."

Which he still did sometimes, though not nearly as often. Training with Octavia and then keeping that training up meant that he was far more in control, far more efficient. "Fighting for survival means you don't necessarily have a whole lot of time. I've trained here, though. Friend back home who was a warrior among her people -- " Because they had been O's people, moreso than any of the others had. " -- and she trained me here."

A snort. "Even if training me did at first consist of trying to beat the shit out of me because she was trying to cope with losing someone. I had to learn how to fight at her level."

	"You are from a world where you have to fight?" Ronon looked Murphy over. he didn't say it out loud, but he thought that was unfortunate. The guy might be able to hold his own for a while, but likely there were far more capable fighters in his world. "How did you survive?" He had survived his years on the run because he was agile. "Honestly, sometimes I'm not sure," Murphy admitted with a shrug. "We were all a bunch of misfits. Born in space, the powers that be sent a hundred of us down to earth to see if it was for living on -- yay, radioactive planet."

The more he thought about it, the more he realized how shitty that'd been -- and he'd always known it was shitty. But it'd been his life, just the way things were.

"Best part? The hundred kids they sent down? Were all just kids. We weren't even eighteen yet. We'd all been locked up, though, for things we'd done."

"Still sounds like a raw deal," Ronon said. "I'm from Sateda, a planet in a different galaxy. My people were culled by a predator species that sucks the life right out of a person. I'm the last one," he really didn't like to think about it. But since he'd told Natasha all about it, it was easier to mention casually in conversation now. It still hurt, it would always hurt, but he could deal with it a little better now.

"Sounds like we both got a shitty story before coming here."

"Yeah." Murphy sighed and shook his head. "But this place was a good second chance for me. Made friends, met a girl, life was good. Then she got sent home and life kind of sucked. Second girl I dated here, though?"

A smile, now.

"Raven and I knew each other from back home," he said. "We're... not exactly friendly there. Okay, not at all. But we wound up friends, and then we wound up dating, and then we wound up with a kid together."

The expression on his face dimmed. "And then she got sent home."

"Things happen," Ronon said. There wasn't much else to day. He was glad for the guy, even though he didn't know him. Seemed like he really had a second chance here.

It wasn't so much a second chance for Ronon, Alantis had been that. But it was a new start or something. In the end it came down the same basic sentiment. "Seems like you're doing all right, just the same."

Though it'd started when Aurie was little and Lincoln had been sent back, when Murphy had wound up as the girl's uncle. Now that he was her father, it was even more important.
