Who: Rodney McKay and Mare Barrow What: Rodney finds a teenage girl. Where: The park. When: Saturday, October 24. Warnings: Lightning and snark. Status: Started in GDocs, continued in comments.
Mare had no idea where she was. This very well could be Maven’s doing. She wouldn’t put it past him. Though how Maven had found her, she had no idea. She was currently in a park, and luckily she could feel the electricity crackling around her. That was a good sign. It was a sign that it wasn’t Maven’s doing as well. He was too much of a coward to allow her use of her abilities.
She couldn’t sense any silence stone around her, or any Silvers who could silence her abilities. Very good. That didn’t explain where she was or how she got here, but it at least made her feel a tiny bit more at ease. Just a little.
She was on high alert, though. The moment she heard footsteps behind her, she spun around and shot off a bolt of purple lightning in that direction. Not aimed at the person, but close enough to be a warning.
“Don’t get closer,” she warned.

Rodney didn’t usually cut through the park, even in the afternoon, but it was the quickest route between where he had been dropped off by his coworker, and the diner he preferred for lunch. Even if it was a late lunch, food was food and he needed to keep his blood sugar up. (Anyway, that was what he was still saying, even if he didn’t really need to anymore, it was a bit of normalcy after all the shit he had been through.)
Of course, he couldn’t have a normal day this week, no. He had to be the one who runs into a purple haired teen with lightning bolt powers.
“I wasn’t planning on it,” he told her, holding up his own hands. In fact, he was seriously considering running the other way. “What happened? Justin Bieber broke up with One Direction again?” Or, at least that’s what the magazine at the store had splashed all over their front page.
---
Mare blinked at the man’s words. “Who is Justin Bieber and what is a One Direction?” she asked. “You can’t break up a direction, no matter what this Justin Bieber person says.” She studied the man in front of her for a moment, her head tilting slightly. She held her hand out, a ball of purple lightning hovering just above the hand. Just in case.
“Are you a Silver?” she asked, though she highly doubted he was. He would have tried to defend himself from the lightning if he had silver blood running through his veins. Though, to be fair, the lightning hadn’t hit him.
She wasn’t about to relax until she knew for sure, though. “Where am I? Did Maven have anything to do with my being here? Where’s Cal? Or Kilorn?”
---
There was a shrug from Rodney, because he didn’t know either, he just saw them on a magazine. “Not a clue, apparently they’re famous for something. Probably for making teenagers cry after catching their underwear.” Yes, he had opinions about teen idols.
“What’s a silver? And I have no idea who those people are, though that’s a step up from someone asking me if I’m dying or recently dead.” Damn dome brought in the craziest people. “You’re in Madison Valley, Indiana.”
---
She sighed at his question. "Silver," she said, clearly exasperated. "What color is your blood? Red or silver? Probably red, since you didn't try to attack me after the lightning." She sighed softly, and allowed the ball of lightning to dissipate. She didn't completely trust this man, but she trusted him a bit more than she first had. A tiny bit. A smidge.
She felt no threat from him, at least.
"Where? How did I get here? Maven didn't do this, I can still feel the electricity around here…. Is my family safe?" She didn't feel bad about bombarding the man with questions. "Who are you?"
---
“It was red the last time I got shot.” Which sadly, hadn’t been all that long before arriving in Madison Valley. The amount of times he had been injured in Pegasus was sad, but not at all surprising.
“We don’t know, and there are a lot of brilliant minds trying to figure it out. And you’ll have to ask the City Council people when they come by to give your your welcome package.” At least he figured that was what would happen.
“Rodney McKay, I haven’t been here very long, but it hasn’t been all that dangerous so far.”
---
“Red,” she repeated, clearly relieved. “Why did you get shot?” she asked. She wasn’t going to apologize for asking so many questions. Of course she had a lot of questions. She couldn’t handle arriving in a random town in a place called Indiana without having a lot of questions.
She sighed softly, “I’m Mare Barrow.” Because giving him her name seemed like a safe enough thing to do.
“It’s safe here?” She had to make sure. She felt she could maybe trust this Rodney guy. Maybe.
---
“Depended on the planet and the day. Sometimes, it was just that we even showed up and said hello.” Because Pegasus was like that. Being constantly hunted as food made some people a little testy.
“So my friend and the townspeople say. Of course, I’m not sure any place is ever ‘safe’. Something could always go wrong and try to kill us all.” Rodney really wasn’t the first people should meet.
---
"Oh, that's reassuring." Yes, she was trying to be sarcastic and nice about it. At the same time. She wasn't sure she succeeded.
"Who is the welcoming committee, then? Where am I supposed to stay? What about money?"
Still. Not going to apologize for asking questions.
