The solemn atmosphere of churches was never particularly peaceful to Cesare. He'd spent a lifetime listening to whispers, conspiracies and the plotting behind the Vatican walls that made it much more a lesson on treachery and an inability to trust anyone than it ever was as a house of God. Despite the sleepy nature of this town and the quiet stillness of St. Michael's, Cesare didn't feel anymore at ease here than he did in Rome - though the city lacked the fundamental danger of Rome, and also much of its thrill. A normal person, perhaps, would feel better in Madison but to Cesare it felt like a massive waste of time. He was restless, and the cloistering collar of his cassock suffocated him. It was all his doing, of course, he'd resigned his role as Cardinal in Rome with his father's blessing to do so and finally escaped a cleric's robes, only to reclaim his ecclesiastical vows here in this city. But it had been familiar and in a place of discomfort, unfamiliarity and general.. misunderstanding he did what anyone would do. He returned to what he knew.
But that was changing now, wasn't it? Lucrezia was here, and she was as radiant and beautiful as she'd ever been. And though she wasn't dancing on the clouds or in the stars anymore it was still a great comfort to have her near, and a new stress entirely. Cesare smiled at her though, and kissed her brow, hooking an arm around her waist as they wandered the small lawn that circled the church. There was no place better suited for privacy than inside the Confessional, but it was enough to be outside in the moment and away from the cluster of other people who claimed the church as sanctuary. Even if the heat was exhausting and the robes uncomfortable, and his collar suffocating.
"I'm glad you're here," he said. "Even if here is a long way from home. I hoped you'd come, as much as I dreaded it." She made it better, a thousand times so and standing near to her.. he breathed easier.
