Now that the summer was over, Landon didn’t get as much time to hang out with Hope as he had when school was out. There was class and homework and having to go to bed earlier to get up earlier, and it just equalled a lot of time he couldn’t spend with her. They had one class together - math - but that was it.
So he looked forward every day to the short amount of time that they got to spend together at lunch. The food was terrible but the company was great and it was actually really nice to have someone to sit with at lunch in the cafeteria. It wasn’t really something he was used to.
He got his food and sat down at an empty table, and watched the line until he saw her. Then he raised his hand and beckoned her over with a smile.

As much as Hope missed the Salvatore school, she was becoming more accustomed to attending normal public school. Obviously, it helped having Landon around and, as much as she might not want to admit it, Lizzie too. Unfortunately for her and Landon, they only had one class together and it was math. While most people hate math, Hope looked forward to it just to be able to see her boyfriend. Just being near him physically helped Hope feel more comfortable even if they couldn’t talk too much during it.
Thankfully, lunch provided that place for much needed social interaction and Hope actually had a bit of a bounce to her step when that time came around. After making her way through the lunch line, she looked around, spotting Landon waving her over with a smile. An uncontrollable smile formed on her face and she headed over, taking a seat across from him at the table.
“Hey, how are you?” Hope greeted, setting down her tray.
***
“Pretty good,” he smiled. “The day’s going okay. Nobody’s shoved me in a locker yet, anyway.” So far people hadn’t bullied him quite as badly as they had back in Mystic Falls, but he was also kind of waiting for it to happen. It would, eventually, and being a phoenix didn’t give him any awesome way to fight back against bullies. At least nothing he’d discovered yet.
“What about you? Good day?”
He wished he had more classes with Hope so he could tell if she was happy, if she’d made friends, if she was getting along with people. He knew she had problems with that and wished he could help more than he could.
***
“Hey, anyone shoves you even by accident you refer them to me, okay?” This was not the Salvatore school and people that were different tended to be bullied here. It was one reason Hope was upset about her schedule. She couldn’t be with Landon all the time; she couldn’t protect him. She hated the idea of him being hurt, especially if she was not around to stop it. “No one gets away with that stuff. You don’t deserve that.”
Hope couldn’t complain. Outside of not being around Landon nearly enough, she knew her classes would be easy and being that she was a loner, other students seemed to stay away from her. It didn’t lend itself to making many friends, but they weren’t teasing her either.
“I can’t complain, but I wish I had more classes with you.”
***
“Me too,” he said. “But you’re smarter than me, I guess,” he teased. He wasn’t really sure why they were in such different classes, and he wished they could have more classes together, but at least they were at the same school.
“So far people are kind of leaving me alone. I guess they think all of us Refugees are weird. Eventually they’ll figure out that I’m shit at fighting back and then stuff will start. But I can take care of it, really. I don’t want you getting in trouble for me.”
***
“Maybe with magic and stuff, but book stuff? No, no way.” Hope refused to believe that. She did well in school, but she felt as if them being separated was just this town being horrible to them and nothing else. There was nothing she could do about it either. No magic was strong enough to manipulate this place.
Hope frowned. “I don’t care because it’s protecting you. I’ll get in trouble all day long if it keeps you safe.” Hope knew he didn’t particularly like her fighting his battles, but she didn’t like him being bullied either and Landon was a nice guy. Unfortunately, people tended to pick on nice guys because they didn’t think they would fight back.
***
“I’m not completely helpless, Hope,” he said. This had been an ongoing disagreement between them. “I can take care of myself. I did before I met you.” Sure, there had been bad things that happened, but he’d gotten through them. “You have enough battles of your own to fight. I can take getting shoved in a locker. Or having milkshakes spilled on me. Or anything like that. It’s not a big deal.”
Honestly, he was used to it. And sometimes he worried he’d get made fun of more if his girlfriend jumped in to save his ass.
***
Hope knew as soon as she brought up the idea of her defending him there would be an argument. It happened a lot between them, but what was Hope supposed to do? Just stand by and watch as he got shoved into a locker or someone dumped a milkshake on his head? Was she supposed to just let him be hurt when she had all the ability in the world to stop it? Of course she knew a lot of it had to do with the fact that he also didn’t like the idea of being made fun of because his girlfriend fought his battles.
“It’s a big deal to me. I don’t like to see you hurt.”
***
“I’m pretty unbreakable,” he said with a half smile. Which of course wasn’t exactly true, but he would come back if he broke. As far as he knew, he’d just keep coming back again and again because there wasn’t any limit for being a phoenix.
“Really. I don’t want you to get in trouble over me. I can take care of the people here. I just want to spend more time with you. I hate that we only have one class together.
***
It was sort of true; Landon was unbreakable. He could still be hurt, but as far as death was concerned? He couldn’t die. It was somewhat reassuring though Hope didn’t like the idea of him being hurt in general, death involved or not. Still, she didn’t want to spend on of the only times during school she saw him fighting either.
“It’s mostly true, but if I see anyone doing anything to you I’m stepping in.” Because they had different classes aside from one, Hope doubted she would be able to interfer with much, but it was better than her giving up completely on defending him.
Hope picked at her food. “I wish we could change that, but I don’t know how we could.” Magic? It was tempting.
***
“Maybe next year we’re smarter at picking our classes?” That sounded like the easiest way to Landon. They’d just have to deal with this year, no matter how far apart they had to spend most of their time. It was too late to change classes, after all.
“And we have lunch, anyway?” That was better than nothing. They could have been put in different lunch hours, which would have been horrible.
“So how’s your day going?”
***
“I was thinking I’d just spell whoever is in charge to make sure we have every class together, but that works too.” Hope offered him a playful smile. At least they did have lunch together. It was better than nothing and Hope was grateful for that. Neither of them were forced to sit alone.
“Not bad. I mean I miss the Salvatore school, but I can’t complain.” It just sucked hiding what she was capable of here. Not that using powers was promoted at her other school, but at least if she slipped up, she didn’t have to worry about someone freaking out because they had never witnessed a witch using her abilities before.
***
“I miss it too. You know I’ve never really felt at home anywhere but there. You know, like I belonged anywhere.” The Salvatore school was the first thing like that he’d felt, and it was incredible.
“Not that they can teach me much, but it’s nice to be around people who aren’t just normal and might freak out at what we can do.”
More what she could do than what he could, but still.
***
“Me too.” Even in New Orleans she had never felt truly at home despite growing up there. The Salvatore school was really where she learned how to be herself and how to master her abilities. Obviously, her aunt Freya taught her everything she knew to start, but the school had helped hone her skills as well as train her in self-defense.
Hope sighed. “That too. I can’t use my magic here because even if the people here know about it, they still freak out and I don’t want to cause trouble.” Not that it would stop her from using her magic to help the people she cared about if they needed it.
***
“You can use it with me,” he said. She seemed so sad, and like she wanted to use it so badly that he had to offer. He was her boyfriend, after all, and he wanted to make her happy.
“On me, even, if you want to.” He shrugged. It wasn’t like she could really hurt him, at least not for long.
***
“I’d never use it on you, but of course I don’t mind using it with you,” Hope replied quickly. “And anytime we are out of school I will. It’s just a part of me and it sucks having to hide that part.” It sucks having to be extra careful about how you dealt with your emotions because they were linked directly to her powers. If she let her anger go full force, she could probably burn the school to ash.
“But I’ll deal with it. It’s the life we have right now. And I’ll be okay. As long as I have you.” Hope reached across the table and touched his hand gently.
***
“I’m not going anywhere,” he smiled, as he took her outstretched hand in his. “I mean, not by choice, anyway.”
If this place decided to send him home, well, he couldn’t do anything about that. But he’d be here as long as he could.
***
Hope knew neither of them had a choice in whether they stayed in Madison Valley or not, but she would make the most of whatever time she could get.
“Me either. Not by choice anyway,” she replied, giving him a small smile.
