For all she was surprisingly grown up for a kid her age, Penny Kirkman was still a kid, and along with that came a weird sense of jealousy at Trixie's mother showing up again. Oh, she was totally happy for her friend. Of course she was. But it made Penny really miss her own parents, especially her father, and she'd been a little quiet the past day or two. But not so quiet that she wasn't enjoying her usual favorite things.
Penny was right at that age where she was almost too old for the park but not quite, which meant there was a lot of playing on the swings and getting pulled into a game of tag with some of the townie kids -- some of them weren't so bad, really -- and even some keeping the littler kids from getting picked on. She had that whole "fierce protector" thing going on and had ever since she was a little thing.
At the moment, though, she'd made her way over to one of the benches so she could sit down and fix her shoe -- she'd managed to get something in it and that something was driving her up the wall, so to speak.
She plopped down on the bench and pulled her shoe off, proceeding to dump a pebble out. Okay, she had no idea how that'd actually gotten in there, but all right.
