Hermann had been in Madison Valley for two years, something that on more than one occasion still threw him for a loop. Even with everything the town liked to pull on its inhabitants, he wouldn't trade it for anything. He'd been blessed -- possibly dubiously -- with an amazing ward in Marlene, and now also in Amara, though not quite as dubiously in that case. He'd been given the chance -- albeit a painful one -- to be a father, brief as those times had been. And, more unexpectedly than anything else, he'd found a second chance at happiness with someone who was willing to put up with him.
He knew that he wasn't an easy person to be around, that he wasn't an easy person to get along with, and even though he was aware of the fact that it probably seemed like he he didn't? He appreciated each and every person who was willing to try. It was just more difficult to let people in now, between his divorce from Vanessa and losing Newt to the Precursors. All of that'd left him with walls that'd never quite come down, even with Marlene giving it her best try.
Then he'd met Daisy, though, and things had changed. (One of these days, Hermann would have to admit that Ianto had been right about a couple of things there. He wouldn't be doing it any time soon.)
Most notably, he actually took a try at being social sometimes -- even if being social was sitting in Starbucks and watching as one of the baristas had to visibly hold back from making people cry. He was out in public and he didn't have any paperwork with him, therefore it counted if you asked him. Nobody ever did, though.
Stifling a smile when yet another customer was rewarded with a glare from the barista after they'd turned to walk away, Hermann turned his attention back to both his coffee and his phone.
