Being twelve didn't feel much different than being eleven had. The only thing that Penny had really felt about it all was sadness over the fact that her dad wasn't there. Her mom and her brother weren't, either, but her mom wasn't alive anymore and her brother was at school. Yeah, they might not've done much for her birthday -- her dad probably would've been super busy -- but there would've at the very least been an attempt at having dinner together.
But she had people in town, though, and they were almost as good. Especially since she actually had friends. She'd been worried at one point, but she had friends now. Like Lyra, who seemed as happy to have Penny hanging out with her as Penny was to be hanging out with her. Their afternoon was probably just going to end up with them inadvertently finding a way to worry Fury yet again, but that was kind of their thing. Penny really wasn't very helpful. She had a hand in a lot of things that confused Lyra at times.
And at the moment, she was sprawled on the floor of Lyra's room, looking over at her friend. She'd gotten way too thinky for a little bit there and she had to change that. "So. Tell me something interesting. Anything at all."
They learned the weirdest stuff from each other that way. Whoops. Sorry, every adult ever.
