Who: Jesse Custer and Zari Tomaz
What: A date!
Where: Zari's place, then to a restaurant
When: Sometime in March
Warning: Low
Status: Closed/Completed Gdoc
Jesse had found a sitter for Aiden that evening, and had invited Zari over for dinner. Or, rather, out to dinner. He had invited her to his house once before, but decided it might be nice to go out to a restaurant with her. A proper date, more or less. He was pleased when she had agreed, because he rather enjoyed her company. It didn’t bother him in the slightest that she was of a different religion than he, as long as it didn’t bother her. And she claimed that it didn’t.
So that was definitely a plus.
They had agreed to meet at around 7 pm, and Jesse arrived at Zari's a few minutes before the agreed upon time. He thought it was only proper to pick her up for their date. He hoped it was a date, and that he wasn't overthinking things. But she seemed to think their first date was a date, so why couldn’t this one be as well?
He knocked lightly on her door, and waited patiently for her to answer.

Now that things seemed to be into dating territory, Zari felt a little more nervous. Not because she was going out with Jesse. She liked him and wanted to see where things could go with him. It was the whole preparation thing. She had no idea what to wear or what going out to dinner meant. Did she have to dress fancy?
Thankfully, she had a Captain who knew how to make anything look good. Sara had been very helpful with picking the right outfit for the occasion. Something a little casual, but nice. Jeans, a nice shirt, cute ankle boots. Her totem was a perfect accessory. Knowing she looked good made her feel more confident. Of course, Sara also grilled her for details in the process. There weren't a lot of those at the moment, but she promised Sara she'd be the first to know if that changed.
She took a deep breath, checked her make-up in the mirror, then slowly opened the door. She smiled when she saw Jesse standing there.
"Hey."
--
"Hello," Jesse said with a smile. "You look very nice tonight." He thought she looked amazing, and decided that this was, in fact, a date. Which he was glad for, because he liked Zari. Quite a bit. But he was still nervous, possibly more so now.
He wasn't exactly sure what to do, mainly because he didn't know a whole lot about what was allowed with dating in her religion. Or if she followed it closely.
He held out a single red rose, and gave her a sheepish look.
"I haven't dated in a while," he admitted.
--
"Don't worry, I haven't either," Zari said in response. She couldn't remember the last time she'd been on a proper date. Well, she wasn't counting her last date with Jesse. Before that, though, it'd been awhile.
"So we're kind of getting back into it together," she added with an assuring smile. "I think we'll be okay."
She actually felt more at ease now that Jesse was here. She took the rose from him, finding the gesture to be sweet. "See, you're off to a good start."
--
“We are,” he said, smiling slightly. “I like the fact that we're kind of getting back into it together,” he admitted. “It makes me a bit more comfortable, really.” He offered Zari a small, almost shy smile. Almost.
The only person he’d ever really dated was Tulip. Sure, he’d slept with women that weren’t Tulip, but he’d never had an actual relationship outside of her. So this was new to him. He didn’t really know what women outside of his one relationship liked. It was weird.
Hopefully Zari would be easy going about it. She seemed like the type of person who would be.
“I’m glad you agreed to the date, though.”
--
"I like that, too." Zari had not dated in so long. She didn't have a lot of time for that, but she did have a few boyfriends here and there. She wasn't really a one night stand type, though. Even in Madison Valley, she had not dated. Sometimes she thought she was married to someone, including Jesse, but that was the extent of it.
Until now.
"If I am going to start dating again, might as well be with someone I like."
There it was, her feelings right out in the open. She wasn't usually good at feelings.
--
Jesse hadn’t dated since arriving in Madison Valley, either. Unless you included Tulip, but he didn’t. Mainly because he had known her from before Madison Valley. She was from his world. So Zari was the first person he dated, the first person he’d met in town, anyway. And he was glad that she was agreeable to dating. He wasn’t one who dealt well with rejection.
“I am glad you feel that way, Zari. Because I like you, too.” He leaned in and kissed her cheek quickly. “Have I told you about Genesis?” he asked. “Because if I have, I promise to never use it on you.” He didn’t want her to worry about him using it on her. And he was truly trying to not use it often.
Except at work when necessary.
--
Zari wasn’t expecting a kiss on the cheek, but she didn’t mind it at all. If anyone was going to show her any kind of public display of affection, she wanted it to be from Jesse.
“I think I know the gist of it,” she said truthfully. As head of security, she made it a point to know what everyone brought to the table when it came to protecting the staff and patrons alike. “But not the full extent. I do appreciate that you would never use that on me.”
She believed him when he said it, and she trusted him.
--
“If I use Genesis, the person I use it on is obligated to do what I say. As long as they have a soul, at least. Some people it wouldn’t work on. Once, when I was first learning about it, I sent some poor kid to Hell. I didn’t realize it would actually send him to Hell.” He still felt bad about Eugene. Eugene was one of his greatest regrets.
“But I promise, I won’t use it on you. Ever. That’s not how I want our relationship to be.” He offered her a small smile. “I want you to do things because you want to. Not because I told you to, or anything.”
He kissed her cheek once more. “Thank you for coming out with me tonight.”
--
“I trust you,” Zari said, this time vocalizing it. She really didn’t think he would do that to her. For one thing, she really had nothing to hide. She wasn’t a trouble maker, for the most part. At least she would never do anything to harm anyone.
It was interesting that she knew multiple people who sent someone to hell by accident. She’d tell him about that sometime, but she’d wait until another time. This was a date, so shop talk could wait. She did appreciate Jesse telling her about his ability before things went any further, though.
She smiled again at the sweet kiss on her cheek. Maybe later, they could share a real proper one.
“So, with that said, let’s see where this night takes us.”
---
He was glad that Zari trusted him. And greatly appreciative. Because not everyone would trust someone with abilities like his. They would likely question whether they were doing something because of their own free will or because he had made them do it. Of course, the way Genesis worked, it made it a bit obvious that he was using it. But sometimes people may doubt it. He was glad that she trusted him not to use it on her. He truly meant it when he told her he wouldn’t.
Jesse hoped that there would be a proper kiss later, but at the moment? He was just glad to be able to kiss her cheek. It was nice.
“Yes, that is a fantastic idea,” he said, smiling. He offered her his hand, so they could head to the restaurant for dinner.
