It was strange to be in a classroom again, and not just because these classes were so different from back home. Peeta hadn't expected to ever be in a classroom again. He hadn't expected to ever be anywhere other than the arena ever again. Sure, some part of him had hoped - Katniss had managed to save him once before - but there were only so many miracles one person could ask for. Except, apparently, there weren't.
Peeta was here. He didn't fully understand where 'here' was, but at least so far it seemed a far sight better than District 12, and it was certainly better than the arena. There were things he couldn't think about too hard - Katniss, for one - but he knew there was a real possibility that he could be happy here.
Peeta always tried to be hopeful, but for once his hope didn't seem misplaced.
Still, it felt weird.
The lunch room was teeming full of people. Some distant part of Peeta's mind flinched; loud noises and crowds reminded him of the Capitol, and sudden movements set off his Hunger Games-trained instincts. This place was full of both of them. He fought off the urge to go sit alone in a corner. He couldn't help feeling that in a way, this was like the Games. He needed to win people over. He didn't want to go back to his lonely life, now when he was being given a second chance.
Peeta chose someone at random and walked over to their table. "Mind if I sit here? I'm Peeta."
