Who: Eddie and Ned
Where: Coffee Shop
When: This evening
What: Ned has a prototype
Rating: Low
Status: Closed/Completed Gdoc
Ned was super excited to show Eddie what he had so far. Sure, things weren’t perfect yet, but Ned was confident they would be! He put in all the things that Eddie had requested. He was going to have to ask Eddie if he knew anyone that could design graphics since that wasn’t really his thing - much more MJ’s and she wasn’t here. Still, he decided to meet Eddie at one of the coffee shops to show him what was becoming of his app.
He sat at a corner table just in case it got loud later on and had ordered himself a hot chocolate - still not really a fan of actual coffee. He was tapping away on his keyboard as he waited, trying to decide if he wanted to do the whole ‘swipe right or left’ thing in the app or not.

Eddie had received Ned’s message while he was working out, so when he showed up at Starbucks and ordered a green tea lemonade, he was still in his workout clothes. But unlike some people, he looked good in his workout clothes. Eddie was just about as fit as it was possible to be, and completely unaware of how hot he could be. He was super excited that the app was moving along, and he was grinning as he slid in to the seat across from Ned.
“So, it’s going to work then?”
Despite Ned’s confidence, Eddie hadn’t even really known if the thing was possible.

If Ned didn’t have Peter Parker as a best friend, he might have been a little more intimidated when he saw Eddie approach. Ned had long accepted the fact he would never had killer abs or be able to do all the cool things that Peter could do. Sure, he wished for superpowers at some point, but Ned figured even if he could do super cool stuff, he’d stay looking the same. Still, as the boy approached, Ned had to wonder if Eddie even realized he was basically a walking male model - probably not.
“It should! If you have your phone I could put the prototype app on there for you to try. The only thing I was wondering was like, is it going to be just you offering the service or other people too? Like, will this be an Ubereats type thing where the closest person to protect you will show up or is this a ‘book in advance’ thing or?” Ned also wondered how Eddie planned to make sure the people offering the service weren’t total creeps, but that wasn’t really a software thing.
“Oh, and I thought of a few names since I was bored in English class.”
He swiveled his computer around. He had known Eddie had been spitballing Guard, so it was there on the list. There was also a few not-so-great ones like Send Help and Hire-a-Guy. There were also a few that he had thought might work like SOS, Watch Over Me, bSafe, and WithU.
***
“Well, I think it’s going to be a direct hire thing. Not like Ubereats. I mean, we’ll all know each other and work together and share the money at the end of the day. I’ll talk to everyone and make sure that they’re legit before I hire them. So...well, I guess the closest one should help them out? That would be fastest for everyone involved, don’t you think?”
Eddie looked at the names. He liked ‘Guard’ because it was simple, but he also liked bSafe, and it had that weird internet lingo with it. He was going to have to choose eventually but he thought maybe he could get by for right now without choosing one.
“So far, it’s me, Buffy and Rose. I don’t know who else would want to work for us, but they won’t just be random people.”
***
He nodded, taking in the information. It made sense. “You should talk to Peter Parker. He’d be really good at it too.” And Ned was certain his friend would agree. If he didn’t, well… Peter could just be annoyed with him and he’d apologize.
With a few clicks, Ned had the prototype of the app download onto Eddie’s phone. “Okay, you should have the basic thing. There’s a map of Madison on there so you can put in where you are and where you need to go if you want, plus I added a panic button so if you get scared before you get picked up or something, you just have to click the button and it’ll alert anyone with the app and the police too…. If that’s okay?”
***
“That’s a fantastic idea,” Eddie said, nodding vigorously. “I like the panic button idea. Are the cops here okay with it?” He knew from other people that the police hadn’t always been overly friendly to the refugees who had arrived in Madison Valley and he didn’t want to cause any trouble with them.
“This looks fantastic, Ned,” he said, scrolling through it. It was really better than he’d expected.
“Peter? Okay, I’ll contact him. Do you know anyone else who might be interested?”
The more people they had involved, the better their app could work.
***
He shrugged at the question of the police. “Maybe? I mean, don’t they want to help? Or, I mean, we could take them off and I could just have it send it to you guys and Fury - I’m pretty sure he could send people places pretty quickly if he needed to.” Of course, Ned wasn’t sure how thrilled the man would be if suddenly he kept getting panic button calls. Fury was super cool but also super scary.
“Um. I think maybe… uh. Maybe this girl named Emma? Maybe. I don’t know. She’s kind of gone through some stuff lately so maybe now’s not the best time… I’ll have to think about who else would be interested.” He made a little face as he thought about it. He’d definitely ask around.
“You know, making this was actually really fun. And way more legal than what I normally do? Thanks.”
***
“Way more legal?” Eddie asked, eyes wide. He wasn’t one of those people obsessed with the law. He’d even helped Rose with a prison break once, so he wasn’t judging. He was just curious as to what exactly he’d meant by that. “What kind of things do you do back home?” Hopefully nothing too bad. If it was just hacking and stuff, Eddie was fine with that. As long as nobody innocent got hurt. Eddie was a protector of innocents.
He pulled a little pad of paper from his pocket and wrote down Emma’s name and Peter’s.
“Feel free to text me if you think of anyone else.”
***
“Uh…” He paused and glanced around. “I sort of help Spider-Man sometimes? And I hack stuff to find information?” He hoped that wouldn’t put Eddie off too much. It wasn’t like his hacking was the sort of stuff that hurt people. Sometimes it put people behind bars, but those people deserved it.
“Yeah, I will.” He nodded. “And I’ll keep like, making sure there’s no bugs and stuff. I think this app is really cool.”
***
“Oh, okay,” Eddie said, clearly relieved. There was nothing wrong with that. As long as he wasn’t hurting people, he didn’t care what Ned did. And plus, helping Spider-Man didn’t seem like a bad thing since Spider-Man was apparently a hero. “Doesn’t sound that bad to me.”
He nodded. “Cool, cool. Like...when do you think it will be done? I’m not trying to rush you, but I have no idea how long this sort of thing takes. Debugging and all that.”
Eddie had studied being a Guardian, not computers.
***
He considered the screen on his computer for a moment. “I can get it to you by Friday, if that works. And if there’s bugs and stuff I can keep fixing it when it’s in use. Usually there’s stuff that comes up once people started using it. But I don’t mind. It’s sort of like a test to see if I really like this sort of work, which I think I do. I always thought about making my own apps as a job, you know.” Well, if working with Spider-Man and the Avengers didn’t pan out. Considering that Peter was just outed and accused of being a murderer back home.
“I think this is really cool and people will definitely use it.”
**
“Great,” he smiled. He liked that Ned thought it was a good idea, even if he was involved in it and had put all this work in it. Maybe that meant other people would think it’s a good idea too.
He offered him his hand, standing and grabbing his drink to take home with him.
“Thanks. Really. This is going to be great.” And with that, he left the store looking at the app as he left the store.
