Wednesday had been cutting back on his alcohol consumption since being in Madison Valley. Especially after gaining a ward. He wanted to be responsible and sober (at least most of the time) in case Elena needed him for something. But she was pretty self sufficient, and didn't need a whole lot of anything. So that particular Wednesday evening, he decided to make a quick stop by Lou's in order to get a few drinks in his system.

Maybe more than just a few.

He claimed a bar stool at the bar, and ordered a whiskey, neat. Along with a shot of strong alcohol, he wasn't particularly picky about what the shot contained. He decided to allow the bartender to choose what was in the shot. He supposed that was safe enough, it was hard to mess up a shot.

"How has your evening been?" he asked the woman behind the bar.

Maria recognized Mr. Wednesday from the network and seeing him around town so when he placed his order, she wasn't about to give anything that tasted like crap. He seemed like a nice gentleman so she was going to give him something nice to drink. She wasn't someone who was going to rip off her customers, either.

She placed his drinks in front of him and gave him a smile.

"It's been pretty peaceful since I kicked out a troublemaker about an hour ago," she answered honestly. "Apparently he thought that he could change my mind about cutting him off. He was wrong." She shrugged and then smiled again. "How about yours?"

Wednesday could be both nice and a gentleman when it suited him. And tonight, it definitely suited him. He didn't want to cause Maria to give him any trouble. Not that he truly thought he would, but just in case. She seemed like the type of person who was responsible about work and such, and he didn't want to give her any reason to kick him out or anything.

He laughed softly, "People seem to think they know better than the bartender about whether they've had too much to drink. Of course, they're usually wrong. Alcohol tends to... make you think you haven't had enough."

Mr. Wednesday considered her question for a moment. "It is good, so far. It all depends on the quality of the whiskey you just gave me." He flashed her a smile as he spoke. He had no doubt that she wouldn't rip him off with the alcohol.

Maria nodded. "That's very true. He also thought because I was smaller than him that I would be intimidated but he didn't realize that I know how to deal with people like him. I ran a bar back home that had much rougher clientele than drunk jock boys."

She laughed at his response. "I did not give you the most expensive because you did not ask for it and I would not do you the disservice of giving it to you when you didn't ask for it ahead of time because I never assume you want to spend that much. I also did not give you the cheapest because, yuck. I've seen you enough on the network to know you actually have taste and are a gentleman who knows what he likes."

She leaned forward. "I gave you two grades below the most expensive, the same stuff I buy when I get paid. If you don't like it, let me know, and I'll give you the next grade up at no charge."

Maria knew her alcohol and her people.

"People underestimate others, especially if they are smaller. Or if they are a woman," he mused. "People need to realize that not everyone is how they appear. People can be... quite different from how they appear." Like being a Norse god who appeared to be an older man.

He offered her a small smile as she explained which alcohol she had chosen for him. "I am someone who knows what he likes, yes. But not very many people believe me to be a gentleman." Which was true enough. People who knew Wednesday? They knew that he wasn't the most gentlemanly person around.

"I appreciate it," he told her. "I do not believe I have had the pleasure of meeting you in person. I am called Wednesday here."

Maria nodded. "You should never believe that everything or everyone is as they first appear because most people can be wearing a mask or they can be something completely different than you ever expected."

She smiled at him when he said not many called him a gentleman. "Every conversation I have witnessed on the network has been nice and you have been nothing but friendly and polite with me since you have sat down. Until you do something to change my opinion in some drastic way, I'll stick with gentleman."

When Maria decided she liked you for some reason, it took a lot to shake her faith in you.

"It's nice to meet you, Mr. Wednesday. I'm Maria. Have you been in Madison long?"
