Adam had started thinking he might never go home. After all, look at how long he'd been there. But then all those people -- including ones he'd known, ones he'd known fairly well -- had gone home, and he'd started thinking that maybe it would happen someday after all. He didn't want it to. Was terrified of it. Because if he went back? It was eternity in the cage. He didn't want that, didn't ever want that.
And then they'd gotten a little while out from the disappearances and he'd stopped thinking about it as much. Big mistake.
The cage again. So much time. Him and Michael and Sam and Lucifer, and then it was just him and Michael. Years upon years, only longer, so much longer. And then an agreement. An agreement he didn't mind.
The doors being thrown open. Escape.
Sitting in a diner with Michael, adjusting to finally being out of the cage. The both of them, out. Neither of them knowing what to do. All Adam cares about at the immediate moment is food, because it's been so long.
Michael just looks at him indulgently. And maybe a little sadly.
Adam asks Michael what he's going to do now and the response is that Michael doesn't know. Adam's response to that one is laughter and saying that he's in the same boat.
"Yeah, same here," Adam says. "It's not like I have family waiting to see me."
"You have the Winchesters. Your brothers."
Adam snorts. "I met them once and they let me rot in hell."
"Family." Derision drips from Michael's voice.
"Family sucks." Adam agrees.
Castiel summoning Michael, seeing Sam and Dean for the first time since Stull Cemetery. Michael's displeasure at the fact. Rage. Handcuffs will do that. And then his brothers ask Michael for help, after everything, and Michael's angry.
"I'm not aware of anything. You're asking me to trust you. You, who doomed me." Looking to Dean. "You who let Lucifer walk free while your own brother sat in hell." Looking to Sam.
They're not happy, either.
"Adam, look. I know we bailed on you, okay, and there's nothing we can say to fix that."
"How about... 'I'm sorry'?"
Adam's not afraid to take that shot, bolstered by Michael's encouragement.
They try to explain the situation to Michael, but he won't hear it. Adam tries to explain it to Michael, but that doesn't work, either. He's less upset with Adam, but he's still upset.
It's Castiel that gets through to him, not so much 'gets through' as it is 'forces it into his mind' and all Adam can do is sit in there and feel Michael's confused rage and hurt.
"Adam, I want you to know... we are sorry. What happened to you? You're a good man. You didn't deserve that."
"Since when do we get what we deserve?" A sad smile. "Good luck."
And then he's walking out of the bunker, to who knows where.
Adam woke with a start, a louder noise than he'd meant to make considering there were other people at home, and a near panic attack. Well, that wasn't the kind of thing he'd ever expected to learn about back home, not in the least. But at least he hadn't actually gone home. He'd take it, once he stopped hyperventilating.
