Link was still a bit saddened and shocked by the loss of his housemates. He'd been the ward of Tucker, but met the other Freelancers and Charlie after. He hadn't really known what to think of them at first. They were all from a completely different world than he was and for awhile, he felt like the odd one out. Eventually, though, he'd grown used to them and even loved them like his family.
Now they were all gone. He might've been okay if just one or two left but no, the Dome sent every single one of them away. He really didn't want to stay in the house, so he decided to move in with Legalos, who accepted which Link was very grateful for. But he started feeling a bit cooped up in the house, so he went outside for a bit.
No matter what, Link always seemed to enjoy the outdoors more. He especially liked the woods and the park, and he ended up going to the latter, finding a bench to sit on while he quietly people watched for a few moments.
***
Cosette had been frightened by the sudden disappearance of so many people, but she was lucky enough that she hadn’t lost anyone that she cared about. M. Grantaire and M. Enjolras were still here, and so was Shoshanna. Those were the people she loved most here, and they were all safe and sound. She didn’t know how she would have been feeling if she’d lost one of them.
She’d just finished her classes, and was walking home, feeling more than a little self-conscious. Today she was wearing jeans for the first time, and while she found them incredibly comfortable, she couldn’t help but worry that everyone was staring at her, and thinking bad things of her.
When she saw Link, she forgot that immediately, though, and went over to him. She was glad to see that he was still here as well.
“Hello!” she cried. “You...you look sad.”
***
Link had been preoccupied by watching everyone he could see that he hadn't heard anyone approach him. It wasn't until he heard a familiar voice that he snapped out of it and he turned, smiling when he saw Cosette. She was someone whose company he enjoyed and he was glad she was still around.
"Hello," he greeted her. "You look nice," he noted her jeans. It was different because he'd only seen her in dresses and skirts, but it was a good different.
At her comment, though, his smile faded a little. "I lost my guardian and the rest of my housemates." It wouldn't have been so bad if it was just one or two that had left, but all of them? It was just way too much.
***
“Oh,” she cried, sadneses in her tone. “I’m so sorry!” She sat down beside him because obviously she couldn’t just leave him after that. That would be cruel. “So many people left. I was lucky and those I love are still here but…” She shook her head, looking like tears were going to come to her own eyes out of sympathy for his loss.
“Do you have a place to stay? I’m sure Shosanna would make room if you don’t have anywhere to go….”
She was very concerned about him, as she would be about any of her friends.
***
"It's..." Awful, horrible, sad, all of the above? Link wasn't really sure how to describe it. He just knew losing everyone in the house was the worst. "I don't know, it's just awful to lose them all at once." Thinking about them made him tear up a bit and he quickly wiped his eyes.
"Thanks but I'm staying with a friend. He was kind enough to let me live with him." He also went to the Settlement too, but he definitely appreciated the offer.
***
“Oh, I’m glad you have a place to stay.” She was sincerely hurting for him, having lost so many people. It must have been kind of how she had felt when she arrived here without Marius and Papa...it was like her whole world had been stripped away and she didn’t even know where to start.
“I know I am not as good a friend as your others, but I am still here, if it helps. Perhaps we could get coffee someday?”
***
He nodded. "I'm glad too." It was either with Legolas or he might've gone to the Settlement. Luckily, Legolas was okay with them living together now. He wasn't sure if he could continue living in the Freelancer house. It was just too quiet there.
"I definitely appreciate that." He really did. Even if they were as close, he did consider her a friend and hoped they could become better friends as time went on. "I'd like that, though maybe hot chocolate instead? It's something I've grown fond of since I arrived here."
***
“Oh, hot chocolate is lovely,” she smiled. “Sometimes I would have it for breakfast back home. It was such a treat! But papa spoiled me sometimes.” All the time, really. But that was what fathers were supposed to do for their daughters, wasn’t it?
“Or maybe we could go see a movie? They still amaze me. No scary ones, though!”
She was still a little squeamish aboud blood and such in movies, and really, why shouldn’t she be? She’d never been exposed to such things before.
***
"It really is. I like it cold as well, though I think I prefer it warm if I had to choose." Link did love milk back home, but chocolate mixed with it - whether hot or cold - was one of the most amazing things he tried here.
"I'd like that," he smiled. "And no, no scary ones. I'm not a fan of them." While he had killed monsters and seen blood, he still would rather avoid any gore, even if it was only in movies. "But anything else, I'm definitely okay with seeing."
***
“Then we should do that!” She took his hands in hers and squeezed them tightly. “I am so sorry that your friends left you. But you are not alone. Not even close. You are my friend, and I will make sure that you have plenty to do!”
It seemed the kindest thing to do for him right now.
***
"Thank you, Cosette," Link said sincerely, squeezing her hand in return. "Really, thank you. I'm glad the Dome didn't send you away but I'm even more glad we're friends." Yes, it did hurt a lot losing Tucker and everyone else, but he had to look at the positives. And those were that he still had a couple people around, namely Legolas and Cosette.
"Shall we go to the cinema?" he suggested. "I think I have enough money for snacks too." Maybe he should think of getting a job soon. For now, though, he'd rather just enjoy a nice afternoon with Cosette.
***
“Oh, I would love that! And as long as it is not scary - you may choose the movie!” Really, she was so fascinated by the cinema that as long as she wasn’t confronted with terrible things, she was very happy to see any movie at all.
“And next time, I will pay?”
She hoped maybe they could make this a regular thing - she needed friends as much as he did.
***
"Scary movies are definitely off the table," he promised. He didn't like them much either and besides, he'd rather a movie make him laugh or even just smile. Not get scared or cry.
"Deal," he grinned and with that, he led the way towards the cinema.
