More than ever, Landon needed to find his center. Waking up one morning with all new memories had been incredibly weird, and those memories were anything but easy. Some of them were happy, but a lot of them weren’t, and he hated feeling like he’d been lied to, even if he understood why Hope had done what she’d done. He felt torn between Hope and Josie, and while he cared for them both a great deal, he was going to have to hurt one of them. Which sucked. His life had been easier when there hadn’t been any girls in it at all. Only, that wasn’t true. He just wasn’t ready for this sort of thing and didn’t know how to get out of it without hurting them. That was why he’d run. Sure, it was cowardly. He knew that. But he’d never claimed to be particularly brave.
The one blessing about being in Madison Valley was that neither Hope nor Josie were here. So at the moment, while he couldn’t stop thinking about them, he didn’t have to worry about running into either one. He had some time to figure things out.
Even though it was cold, he was in the park, sitting on a picnic table in a lotus position. He had his eyes closed, and was focusing on the fire that Liu Ying had promised him was inside of him. He’d had problems summoning it, or even getting hold of it, but that hadn’t meant that he hadn’t tried. He had. It was just that his ability was so passive that he’d never really needed to be shown how to control it, and so this was a first.
He had his eyes closed tightly, as if concentrating harder would somehow make this easier. One palm was facing up, and finally a tiny flame formed there. It wasn’t much, but it was something.

Life was going surprisingly well for Adam these days. For the first time since Savannah got sent home years ago, he was in a stable relationship, Guarding Lissa was going well, Paige was happy, and the twins were thriving. He was too cynical to believe that it would stay this way, but he was going to enjoy it while it lasted.
On his way to take over duty with Lissa, he detoured through the park. The one thing that he still missed in Madison Valley was being able to indulge in extreme sports, especially skiing. The gear that he’d arrived in was stashed in the back of his closet and he hoped that some day, he’d get a chance to use it.
The flicker of a small flame caught his attention. Was some kid screwing around with fire? Of all people, Adam knew how dangerous that could be. As he approached, he realized that the kid was creating the flame. Huh.
“Nice,” he remarked, pulling off one of his gloves and conjuring up a fireball of his own. “Can you shape the flames?”
***
Landon looked between his fireball and this other guy’s and sighed in disappointment. This guy was obviously a whole lot better at this whole fire thing than he was. And he’d almost been proud of himself for making any sort of a fire at all.
“No,” he said. “I can barely do the fire thing at all. I mean, I really am trying, but it’s just so hard. Back home they never really taught me how to do this.”
Because he didn’t have to do anything to come back. He just had to die and it happened on its own.
***
“Yeah, it’s hard to learn,” Adam said, extinguishing his fireball and giving the kid what he hoped was an encouraging smile. “It took me a long time to master it.” He was probably old enough to be this kid’s father and, wow, that was a frightening thought.
He tucked his gloves in his pockets. “How long have you had your powers?”
***
“My whole life, I guess?” he said with a shrug. He’d never died before a few weeks ago and so his powers hadn’t been triggered, but he assumed they’d been there all along. “But I didn’t know until I was murdered a few weeks before I got here.”
He paused, looking up at the guy.
“I’m a phoenix.”
***
That rang a bell and Adam realized this was the kid that Liu Ying mentioned. “My friend told me about you,” he said. “She thought maybe I’d be able to help. I’m a half demon, but my demonic power is controlling fire.”
It was different than being a phoenix, at least he assumed since he didn’t really know what being a phoenix encompassed, though that wouldn’t stop him from trying to help the kid.
“Adam Vasic,” he said, holding out a hand to shake.
***
Landon took his hand and shook it. “Landon Kirby,” he said. “And who’s your friend? Liu Ying?” He knew her, and while he was a little bit afraid of her, he also really liked her. “She’s trying to teach me, but it’s hard, because this is all so new to me.”
He shrugged.
“I thought I was just a nerdy foster kid who didn’t belong anywhere, you know?”
***
Adam nodded. “Yeah, she mentioned that. I can definitely try to help you too. Who’s your guardian in town?”
His mother had been a huge source of support when his powers first manifested and he didn’t even want to think about what his life would have been like if she’d given up on him instead. They were both lucky that she found Robert Vasic and he was able to help them.
***
Landon told him who his guardian was, it was just one of the normal residents of Madison Valley who’d volunteered. He knew how to be a good foster kid and had just kept his voice down and been good in every way he could.
“I just wish I understood how this worked. I’m the only phoenix I know in my world, so there’s nobody who can really train me.”
***
“Well, you’re welcome by my place any time,” Adam said. “Do you know Star? She’s my ward. Castiel also lives with us.” They had room for another person, but he wasn’t sure how Landon would feel if he made the offer, so he held off for the moment. Maybe once they spent more time together.
He didn’t know anything about being a phoenix, but he was willing to try and help however he could.
***
“I think I’ve talked to her?” He said, although he couldn’t remember her precisely. He’d spent most of his time with Erin until she left, and he was playing catch-up now with all the people here. He was kind of glad that he wasn’t with Erin anymore, though, especially now that his memories were back and he remembered Hope.
“People have been so nice, trying to help me with this.”
***
It was pretty hard to forget Star, but Adam figured he could mention Landon to her. No doubt she’d go out of her way to make friends. “Hey, we’ve all been there,” he said. “And it’s harder for some than others.” He’d always been envious of Paige growing up knowing that she was a witch and being prepared for the onset of her powers whereas his were unexpected and far more unpredictable.
“Let’s sit down and talk sometime. You can tell me what you do know and I can do some research.”
***
“That would be great,” he said. “In my world, nobody knows much about phoenixes at all. I’m the only one we know about, ever, so there isn’t a lot of research or anything like that. No big books to learn about us with. I’d love to learn more.”
That was why he’d been so happy to have Liu Ying helping him out.
***
“I’ll see if I can find anything useful,” Adam said. “I gotta go now, but we’ll talk soon, okay?”
***
“Yeah. Thanks.”
Without Lu Ying around, he wasn’t sure if he’d ever get better. He’d be grateful to Adam for whatever he could bring.
