WHO: Eddie Castile and Kate Danvers
WHAT: Discussing classes and other stuff
WHEN: This evening
WHERE: The Library
WARNINGS: Nah
STATUS: Closed/Completed Gdoc
It was a little weird for Eddie to realize that Kate had been close friends with a different version of him. At first, it had completely freaked him out, but as he’d gotten to know her better, he started to realize what past-him saw in her. She was a lot like Rose in a lot of ways, and she was tough and strong and fun, and exactly the kind of girl he saw himself being friends with. He didn’t share all the memories that she had, but they’d kind of gotten past that mainly by him just trying to ignore it. Hey, it worked.
Although he was a little freaked out by the idea of color coding his notes, he’d agreed to meet Kate at the library to go over all the school stuff he’d been looking at. He’d never even considered going to college before, so the whole thing was a bit overwhelming to him. Maybe she could help him figure out some of it, and maybe they could even figure out something for him to study. Sydney had mentioned that he might try some sort of sports scholarship. While he had no doubt that he could get one, the idea of it still kind of felt like cheating. Oh well, maybe they could talk about that too. Kate wasn’t human either, after all.
He got to the library first and put down his backpack, taking things out of it. A notebook, a course guide, a pen. He only had one color and no little color coded tabs, but Kate could teach him the rest of that a little at a time.
***
Normal people didn’t color code their notes. Kate was not normal people in many ways. Her penchant for organizing information and objects was seemingly at odds with the chaotic way she tended to live her life, It certainly didn’t seem to fit with her headstrong impulsivity. And yet it was one of the things that had bonded her and Stiles together and it was a trait that served her well both academically and in other practical ways. She was more than happy to share it with her friends.
In the almost six years that Kate had been in Madison Valley, she’d had a lot of friends come and go. It was still tough when a friend disappeared and reappeared with no memories of being here before, but she’d learned to roll with it and didn’t give them much of a choice about being friends with her again. Eddie was in that category. She liked him a lot. If he hadn’t been obsessed with Jill and she hadn’t gotten into her complicated relationship with Nick, she could have seen them together. Maybe it happened in some weird alternate universe.
She was carrying a large bag of office supplies when she met up with him at the library. “Hey,” she said, keeping her voice quiet out of respect for the other patrons.
***
Eddie, always aware of his surroundings, had seen her coming as soon as she had entered the building. As a trained Guardian, he was always aware of everything going on around him, even if he didn’t want to be. Except, of course, if it had to do with him and then he could be as blind as any other guy.
“Hey,” he said, also quiet. They both had enhanced hearing so there was no reason for them to disturb the other patrons with their conversation.
He looked at the beg she was carrying and cringed.
“Do I really need all of those, even just to pick out classes?”
***
Kate grinned at the grimace on his face. “Probably not, but I figured it was better to be prepared for anything,” she said. Most likely, they wouldn’t even need a fraction of what she’d brought along. Eddie didn’t need to know that she had a lot more stashed away at home.
“You’re not sure what you want to study, right?” she said. “So we’re looking at primarily intro type classes with no particular degree path yet?”
People often forgot that her father was an academic and she’d inherited his love of education.
***
“Yeah,” he said. “I mean, I’ve never thought of what I’d like to study before. From the time I was a little kid, I was always going to be a Guardian. It was the only choice, really, and one I always liked. So I never considered anything else.”
He looked at the guide for a second.
“Sydney suggested I might be able to get a sports scholarship. Because otherwise I really don’t know how I’m going to pay for this.”
***
“That’s not a bad idea,” Kate said. “But go talk to Kristof at the law office. I know they do stuff to help us displaced folks go to school and buy houses and whatnot.” She hadn’t needed to make use of either option though she was aware it was a thing that they’d been doing for a long time, since Lucas was in town years ago. It was something that might be able to help him, at least. He definitely deserved the assistance.
She hoped that he’d be able to figure out something that interested him.
***
“I like sports,” he shrugged. He had always been physically active, since it was so important to the Guardian life. He was strong, coordinated, and even graceful, and the idea of getting onto a sports team was far less terrifying to him than the idea of choosing classes.
“But yeah, I’ll do that.” He paused, looking at the course guides again. “How do you know what you want to study?”
***
That was a more difficult question to answer. “I guess you find something that really interests you,” Kate said, thinking of her father and his love of archaeology. “Something that you want to know more about. Something that fascinates you.” Her own passion was music and there wasn’t really a college program to study it nor a way to really make a living at it other than what she was already doing.
“Taking a bunch of intro classes should help with that,” she added. “It’ll introduce you to the basics, give you a taste of what else is available.”
***
Eddie had never really considered that before. He’d never considered what was interesting, other than things to do with being a Guardian.
“Well, at least I don’t have to decide the first year. I guess I’ll just take a bunch of different classes and see which one I like best?”
Did he like history? English? What? He’d figure it out, he guessed.
***
Kate nodded. “That’s probably your best bet. Hard to know what’ll spark your interest when your entire life up until now has been focused on being a Guardian.”
At least he’d finally gotten his shit together where Jill was concerned. She wanted both of them to be happy.
***
“Yeah,” he said. And there was a little sadness in that. He’d always wanted to be a Guardian, and he enjoyed the life. He kind of hated having to give it up, but he didn’t really have a choice. He sighed as he turned the page of the course guide, looking through descriptions that, if he were being honest, didn’t look nearly as interesting as what he’d already been doing back home.
“If I play a sport, at least it’ll keep me in shape. You know, if I’m ever needed for anything else.”
***
“Which is not out of the question around here,” Kate said. It wasn’t often, but there were occasions where the fighters among them needed to step up and protect the town from some threat. “We can also go running. That’s a thing we used to do pretty regularly.”
And it was something that would be good for her to get back into doing.
***
“Oh, hey, that sounds good,” he said with a smile. Sometimes he ran with Rose, but usually it was by himself, and that got old fast. He didn’t like being stuck with his thoughts all the time and having a partner to run with would be great.
“It would be great to have someone to push me. I’m guessing you’re pretty fast too, being a werewolf and all?”
***
Nodding, Kate confirmed his guess. “Yeah, I am definitely faster than a human,” she said. “Faster on four legs, but I can keep up on two.” She remembered that they’d been able to challenge each other last time around and hoped that was still the case.
“Mornings okay for you?” she asked.
***
“Yeah. I’m usually up early. Took forever to get myself on a regular human schedule, but I guess I have now.” That showed to him just how little Guardians were needed here.
“We can go for a run and then grab a coffee somewhere afterwards.”
That sounded like fun to him, to hang out with friends like that. He hoped she’d agree to the coffee afterward.
***
Kate grinned and nodded. “Sounds perfect. Now, let’s pick your classes and get you all squared away.” That was the whole reason they were here, after all, and she wasn’t about to let him get sidetracked and conveniently forget to actually register because he was scared.
***
“Sounds good,” he said, sounding determined. He was going to do this, no matter how scary it was. He’d faced fear before, and he could face it again. This surely wouldn’t be as bad as a Strigoi, and even if it was, he’d faced that too.
With that, he turned back to the course guide.
