Cosette loved this time of year. Even when she'd lived under the strict rules of the convent, there'd been something so magical, so pure about this time of year. Cosette believed in God and in the story of Jesus very much, which only made this time of year even closer to heart.
She didn't quite understand, however, why gifts had become such a big deal. Oh, of course, there had always been gifts, even in her day. But it had been very different in her day. A gift or two could be expected, but piles and piles of gifts? Going into debt to buy something for someone? She couldn't expect it and she couldn't help but feel like it was going against the very idea of Christmas.
The Winter Festival might have been over, but there were still decorations up along the streets and the stores all had lights hanging, twinkling in the snow. It was still beautiful, and she set out early Monday morning to do some shopping before her classes began. She wouldn't, of course, go ridiculously overboard, but she wanted to at least get a token for everyone.
Stepping into a store that sold books, she looked around in joy. She loved books, and she had many friends who would too, so this would be a good place to start.
