Severus rolled his eyes when he saw where they'd Apparated, noting the red Chinese lanterns on the restaurant's eaves.
"Of all the places to celebrate. What is it with Chinese food?"
A chuckle escaped Remus as he opened the door. "I love the fortune cookies. Muggles are ingenious with their prophecies."
"Prophecies?" Severus snorted. "They give lottery numbers."
"I like the ones that foretell the future." Remus nodded to the hostess and they were escorted directly to their table. As soon as they were settled, food began to arrive.
Severus observed the arrival of their meal with a sardonic expression. "I see you planned everything in advance."
"Yes," Remus said. "This evening is special."
"Is that so?"
Everything was delicious, from the eggrolls to the Mongolian beef. As they lingered over the jasmine tea, Remus signaled the waitress and whispered something. She giggled and immediately returned with a plate of fortune cookies.
Severus eyed them suspiciously. "These aren't the normal ones. They're chocolate."
"No, they aren't, and yes, they're chocolate. I had them specially made." Remus smiled, handing Severus a cookie. "Go on, open one."
Severus took the cookie as if it might bite, and snapped it open, carefully pulling out the paper. He straightened it and raised an eyebrow.
"What does it say? Remus asked, leaning forward curiously.
"It says..." Severus halted, clearing his throat. 'Someone loves you deeply.'"
Remus smiled. "That's a pretty good fortune. Open the next one." He handed the next cookie to Severus, observing his face closely.
This time Severus didn't hesitate. He cracked the cookie open, quickly removing the paper. The corner of his mouth twitched as he read. 'This person has an important question.' He looked at Remus expectantly, arching an eyebrow.
Remus suppressed a laugh at the familiar expression, and merely tilted his head. "Hmmm, that's interesting. I wonder what it is? You'd better find out."
Severus practically snatched the cookie from Remus, breaking it open. Suddenly he stopped, realization dawning across his face. He stared at the white slip of paper peeking out and took a deep, steadying breath.
Remus's stomach dropped at Severus's hesitation. "Is something wrong?"
Severus shook his head, not bothering to raise it. Slowly, he withdrew the paper and read the fortune. He didn't speak for several moments, then read in a whisper, "I love you. Will you marry me?" He looked up at Remus, their eyes locking.
Remus stretched his hand across the table and grasped Severus's. "I love you. Will you marry me?" he repeated.
Severus paused, and Remus held his breath. A small smile appeared on Severus's lips and he gave a short nod, squeezing Remus's hand.
Clapping broke the silence. Remus and Severus looked over to see a ring of waitresses watching with wide smiles.
Remus grinned and turned back to Severus. "So, what do you think of fortune cookies now?"
Severus rolled his eyes, then smirked. "I suppose the chocolate ones are acceptable."
Remus threw back his head and laughed.
