Severus’ fingers shook as he attempted to button his waistcoat again. It was ridiculous really; he had buttoned the same type of buttons thousands of times. The pewter buttons and some grosgrain ribbon trim should not make any difference. What did make the difference was that he was marrying Remus in forty-five minutes. He dropped his hands to his sides and clenched his fists. Draco chose that moment to burst through the door.
“Are you ready yet?” Draco looked Severus up and down. “I can see you’re not.” He knelt down to button one trouser cuff and sighed as switched to the other. “You might help.” Draco drawled.
Severus attempted the buttons on his waistcoat again; his fingers still shook, but he did manage a single button.
Draco huffed as he stood up. “Lupin will think he’s been left at the alter at this rate. Let me do it.” His fingers deftly worked on the waistcoat fastenings.
Severus had a moment to think. In thirty minutes he was to marry Remus, on the Hogwarts grounds near the lake. Why was their wedding outside? He really was not an outdoorsy type was he? Except when Remus had taken him against that tree behind Hagrid’s hut. Or the time in the courtyard. Or the when he had found himself in the bottom of a boat on the Black Lake, and he and Remus were rescued from certain death by the giant squid because they had been too involved to steer said craft. A smirk came to his face, perhaps he was more the outdoor type than he gave himself credit for.
“That’s it then. Are there flowers? Stupid question I know. Gryffindors.”
Severus picked the lavender rose buttonhole off the desk.
Draco rolled his eyes. “Really, lavender? Isn’t it enough that the wedding colours are black and blue?”
“Would you have preferred black and white; the merging of good and evil?”
Draco cast a sticking charm. “Point. Now about the lavender.”
“It means love at first sight.” Severus muttered.
Draco choked as he laughed harder than he should have.
“Are you quite finished?” Severus asked.
“Well, it was certainly the long way around, wasn’t it?” Draco tried to wipe the smile from his face.
“Shut up and do your best man duties.”
“In a minute. What kind of flower did you get him?”
“A white rose.”
“Traditional then.” Draco commented.
It was traditional and also meant purity, reverence, humility, and a single rose for utmost devotion. Severus didn’t say any of it and simply nodded.
“Let’s get you out there then.” Draco brushed imaginary lint from Severus’ sleeves.

All the chairs were filled and the sun bounced off the lake making it glitter as if it were covered in diamonds. Remus held his hand out for him and Severus stepped into his place. For a moment, he thought he saw the giant squid waving at them over Remus’ shoulder; the vicker’s deep voice drew him into the ceremony and the rest of the world faded away.
