Title: The Awakening: Blood Rites
Author: Arionrhod and McKay
Excerpt: "You've stumbled into the middle of a war, Remus Lupin," Severus intoned, his voice once again deep and strong. "You might find it hard to believe, but it's the truth. Those things that were hunting you, the thing that bit you, was a werewolf." Severus said the word with contempt, and his chin came up. "I am a vampire, and I hunt and kill the lycanthropes. It's a war that has raged for hundreds of years, and, unfortunately for you, you've been caught up in it. Your life is never going to be the same again."
"What?" Remus staggered against the gurney, feeling light-headed, and he flung out one hand to brace himself. "No, you're joking," he murmured, shaking his head in disbelief. "Why would you say something like that? There are no such things as vampires and werewolves!"
Severus sighed, but this time, it was a sound of tried patience. He slipped one arm out of his long leather coat and unfastened the leather breastplate along his injured side. He pulled it away, and Remus could see it was still sticky with blood, but he could also see that what should have been a gaping wound was now a longish pink mark on Severus' skin. "Can a human do that?" he asked, his voice almost gentle.
Remus reached out and touched the mark lightly with fingers that shook, scarcely able to believe the evidence of his own eyes. His gaze flicked up to Severus' face, searching for any sign for duplicity, wanting to believe this was a joke or a trick, but all he saw was deadly seriousness.
"No," he said faintly. "A human can't."
Commentary: I have quite a few Halloween-themed cookbooks and recipes, so I went through and looked for any that related to vampires and werewolves. The following recipes are ones that can be associated with this AU.
Recipe name:Werewolf Claws
Source: Halloween Fun, Food, and Crafts 2008
Ingredients:
2 tbsp flour
1 tbsp plus 2 tsp Cajun seasoning, divided
1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut length-wise into 3/4 inch strips
1 1/2 cups cornflake crumbs
2 tbsp chopped green onion
3 eggs lightly beaten
1 red, yellow, or orange bell pepper, cut into triangles
BBQ sauce
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees, Place flour and 2 tsps Cajun seasoning in a large, resealable food storage bag. Add chicken and seal. Shake bag to coat chicken.
Combine cornflake crumbs, green onion, and remaining seasoning in a large shallow bowl; mix well. Place eggs in another shallow bowl.
Dip each chicken strip into eggs and then into crumb mixture. Place coated chicken strips on a lightly greased baking sheet.
Bake chicken strips 8-10 minutes or until chicken is no longer pink in center.
When chicken is cool enough to handle, make 1/2 inch slit in thinner end. Place bell pepper triangle into slit to form claw nail. Serve claws with BBQ sauce for dipping.
Recipe name: Dripping Blood Punch
Source: Halloween Fun, Food, and Crafts 2008
Ingredients:
4 cups pineapple juice
1 cup orange juice
8 thick slices cucumber
2 cups ginger ale
ice
8 tbsp grenadine syrup
Instructions:
Combine pineapple juice and orange juice in large pitcher. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
Cut cucumber slices into shape of vampire fangs. Stir ginger ale into chilled juice mixture. Fill glasses generously with ice. Pour punch over ice. Slowly drizzle 1 tbsp grenadine over top of each serving. Garnish each serving with cucumber vampire fangs.
Recipe name: Lime Chiller with Blood Drippings
Source: Halloween Fun, Food, and Crafts 2004
Ingredients:
1/4 cup honey or corn syrup
12 drops red food coloring
4 cups chilled pineapple juice
6 ounces frozen limeade concentrate
3 cups chilled ginger ale
Instructions:
In a shallow pan, combine honey and food coloring; mix until well blended. Dip rims of 10 wine goblets into mixture one at a time, coating the rim of each glass. Turn upright and let stand to allow mixture to drip down sides. Place paper towel around base of glass to catch drips.
To serve, combine pineapple juice and limeade in punch bowl. Stir until limeade dissolves; stir in ginger ale. Fill each wine glass with lime chiller.
Tip: freeze seedless red grapes to keep chiller cold instead of ice. Place grapes on a baking sheet and freeze. Store in freeze in resealabe food storage bag until ready to serve.
