RECS - Size Doesn't Matter: From Drabble to Novel
Yours by red_day_dawning (scroll down, almost at the bottom)
Author's summary:"The past was a trap without any relief."
Warnings: Character death, implied BDSM.
Word count:~100
Why you should read this: If grief, devastation and loss have ever been crammed into 100 words and still work, touch, hurt, this drabble shows how it is done. "Yours" won first prize in the 2008 New Year's Eve drabble contest, and with good reason.
Blood Moon by lordhellebore
Author's summary: "In a grim world ruled by the Dark Lord, Snape and Lupin spiral downwards into darkness. Losing themselves, each other is all they have."
Warnings: character death, graphic violence
Word count:~13,000
Why you should read this: You don't like dark-fic? No, neither do I. But this is what it looks like when a brilliant author gives us the "happy ending", dark side version. This fic explores development into corruption in an absolutely stunning way. It explains how people who are essentially aiming to do good are caught up in the dark, and even then try to fight it, not for their own sakes, but for those who are entangled in their web. The detached distance the story is told with works extraordinarily well. Lord Hellebore is one of the best Snupin writers in fandom, and she, if any, dares to explore the dark corners of the ship. Like many of her other fics, the story is both dark and then, surprisingly shows us some kind of light in the dark. I cannot say how much I love her writing, and this fic is so good.
Ghost in the Machine by arionrhod
Author's summary: "There is no better mecha pilot than the angry, bitter Severus Snape - except, perhaps, for his new mechanic, Remus Lupin. Both men are hiding something, and fighting against themselves as much as each other. Thrown together by circumstance and the threat of looming war, can they move past their differences and to foil the plans of an evil corporation, achieve victory, and perhaps find there is a far more satisfying touch than that of cold steel?"
Warnings: None
Word count:~58,000
Why you should read this: Come on... Snape as a mecha pilot? Just look at Backstreet Boy's "Larger than Life" video and then go read... Smeeeexy!!! No, basically you should read this because Arionrhod as usual does a good job. Characterisation is spot on, the world-building very good and believeable and she makes good use of the prompt she's been given for this 2008 SnuSa novel. The story is exciting and with a good flow. A pleasure to read, really. AU sci-fi romance at its best. Now someone just needs to do art for the fic inspired by Backstreet's setup (and possibly also by hot dark-haired goatee-Backstreet guy). Snape as mecha pilot... *drools*
