Three fic recs
I couldn't bring myself to choose just one, so here are a couple of older favorites and something new: "Choices," "The Mills of Manchester," and "Hidden in Plain View."
Title: Choices
Author: The Treacle Tart
Rating: R - but only just
Summary: Sirius Black makes a startling discovery and now he has a choice to make.
This is one of my all-time favorite Snupin fics--an older story, not canon-compliant since it was written pre-Book 5, written in three parts: the first from Sirius's POV, the second from Lupin's, and the third from Snape's. Sirius discovers that Snape has invented the Wolfsbane Potion for Lupin's sake, and knowing that Lupin suffers from (what he believes is) unrequited love for Snape, he must decide whether or not to share this knowledge with Lupin. And in turn, once he makes the choice to tell Lupin the truth, Lupin and Snape must decide whether to keep to the status quo or to take a chance on love and risk being hurt.
It's an incredibly moving story--the fear of rejection that Lupin and Snape both share rings very true to character, and the resolution is tender and sexy and satisfying. But one of the things that I like most about this fic is Sirius: here is the Sirius that could have been, if he'd had the chance to live past Order of the Phoenix. He still doesn't like Snape, but he's matured enough to gain some respect for him, and to face the consequences of his actions. He knows that his stupid prank in the Shrieking Shack ruined Lupin's chances for happiness with Snape, and although it's a difficult decision, he knows that he has to accept this opportunity to try and make things right.
Here's an excerpt:
Suddenly, his mind was racing. ‘Let’s assume that Snape was speaking the truth and he really did not know any other werewolves. If Remus was the only werewolf that he knew then he had probably created the potion for him. At the very least, Remus was the inspiration for the construction of the potion. But why? What would prompt Snape to make a potion for Remus? A complicated and very intricate potion that probably took years to develop at that. You would think he......Oh…..OH…..oh.’
Sometimes life was better as a dog.
'Oh God!' Oh my God, Severus!' Remus moaned deeply and his eyes rolled back in his head. 'More!' Remus reached for Severus' hand to make him make a repeat performance.
'You are insatiable.' Severus turned, to reach for another piece of chocolate. 'You are only getting this piece, then no more Truffes au Chocolat for you!' Severus wasn't sure he could stand listening to Remus' pleasure; the way he moaned made Severus think of other things than chocolate truffles. On the other hand, Remus' ecstatic smile seemed to be worth the sudden tightness of Severus' trousers.
"Has anyone new joined your group lately? Someone who might act a big oddly?"
The Klingon roared with laughter. "This is fandom! We all act oddly!"
