"Oi, Prince Severo!"
Looking in the direction of the shout, Roman smiled when he spotted his friends sitting at the end of the Ravenclaw table. It was completely random which House's table they ate at, so Frank's bellow had made Roman's job of finding them much easier.
His smile widened to a grin when he saw that Severo continued to ignore his Griffindor friend, choosing instead to keep his eyes shut while he deeply inhaled the aroma of the black coffee cradled in his hands. Frank's patience ran out before Roman had reached them, but fortunately Janus was quick enough to snatch the object out of Frank's aiming hand before the blond could lob it at Severo's head.
Janus tossed the neatly wrapped package at Roman once he had sat down next to Severo.
"What's this?" Roman asked, turning the present over in his hands.
"Package for Prince," Frank grumbled, stabbing at a sausage and savagely biting the end off.
"Ignore him," Kassandra commented sleepily, shifting to make her head more comfortable on Janus' shoulder. "He's in a bad mood 'cos he got caught sneaking back to your dorm this morning."
"Bloody Zabini," Frank muttered, abandoning his breakfast in a huff and leaning his head against Janus' left shoulder.
Janus let out a small sigh.
Chuckling a little at the two blonds rapidly falling asleep on their darker boyfriend, Roman gave his own black knight a fond look. Not able to resist the stubbled cheek in front of him, he leaned forward and gave Severo a quick peck. He was pleased when Severo finally roused himself from his drowsy meditation to return the favour.
"Are you going to open it, then?" Roman asked, placing the package in front of Severo.
Severo took a sip of his coffee and then grimaced. "Pass me the sugar," he croaked.
Taking pity on Severo, Roman did as he was bid. After all, it had been Severo's turn to creep back down to the Slytherin dorm. He was lucky that he hadn't been caught by Professor Zabini also.
"Are you sure it's the sweetness that's the problem?" Janus asked, peering at Severo's coffee. "Do you actually have any idea where you summon that stuff from?"
"I ask, it comes," Severo replied with a slight sneer. "Anything is better than pumpkin juice."
Janus rolled his eyes. "So why has your Mum sent you a present? It's not your birthday till August."
Roman was about to ask how Janus knew that the package was from Madam Prince, but then he looked at the wrapping paper again and realised that only Madam Prince would seal the black wrapping paper with a small tablet of silver foil that had Severus Snape's face imprinted in it.
Ah, it's that time of year, Roman thought. Happy birthday, Severus.
As usual on January the ninth, Severo feigned disinterest in what his mother had sent him. And, as usual, there was still plenty of time before first period started when he unwrapped the gift. This year it was a book, and Severo couldn't hide the keen interest in his dark eyes as he opened it and began hungrily scanning the pages.
Peering over his shoulder, Roman could see that it was a text book, but as Severo flipped through the pages he also noticed the hand-scribbled notes in the margins. A long, pale finger ran over these notes, and there was a low, thoughtful hum from Severo. Then, with an abrupt snap, he shut the book.
"You know," Severo said, reaching for his satchel. "For all Mum says Snape was a genius, he didn't have much respect for his books. I don't think she's given me a single one that he hasn't scribbled all over."
There was a collective, "Oh", from Frank, Janus and Kassandra as they realised it was one of those 'Snape things'.
Watching Severo rifle through his bag, Roman stifled a laugh when he caught site of Severo's forearm. Really, Severo might have a greater love of books than Severus had, but they were the same when it came to jotting down their ideas.
"Here," Roman said, grabbing Severo's arm, and he carefully used his wand to transfer the smudged ink from Severo's skin to a scrap of parchment. "Mmm, wart elixirs," he murmured, reading the rescued notes, "interesting."
"Very," Severo replied, snatching the notes and tucking them in the front cover of his new book.
There was a collective groan from the other side of the table again as Frank and Kassandra tried to rouse themselves and the blood returned to Janus' arms. Frank was the most successful of the three in gathering his energy, and he decided to expel it again by leaping at Severo. The resulting fight was noisy and gained both Frank and Severo detention.
Picking up the pieces as Professor Chiswick read them the riot act, Roman rediscoved the book that had once belonged to Severus under the dining table. Severo's notes on wart elixirs were on the floor close by and Remus opened the front of the book to tuck them back in again.
He paused in shock when he saw what had been scribbled in the front of the book: "Property of the Half-Blood Prince".
Thinking of what Severo often wrote in the front of his journals, and what he had once memorably painted in melted chocolate on Roman's torso, Roman smiled and hugged the book to himself. While Remus Lupin would once have loved to have been the property of the Half-Blood Prince, Roman was very happy to know that he would always belong to his own Prince Severo.
