Summary: Happy Snupin Valentine… :)
Severus slipped out of bed and dressed rapidly, shivering a little in the chill bedroom air. Remus murmured in his sleep and rolled over; Severus tucked the blanket more closely around him, picked up his shoes and left the room.
When he finally stood outside, he took a deep breath of the clear, crisp winter air, feeling the scar tissue on his neck stretch. He pushed his hands into his pockets and crunched through the snow and into the forest that surrounded their cottage.
It was still and silent among the trees, the only sound his own strangely muffled steps. Severus conjured a soft light around himself, just enough to make sure he didn't slip and fall. The wind rustled a few branches overhead, and a dusting of snow fell across his shoulders.
As he walked, Severus found his thoughts wandering back to the man still asleep in their bed. Nine months since they'd both faced death and come back; six months since they'd been fully recovered. Five months since they, along with Teddy, had moved into Severus' small, well-hidden cottage in the Forest of Birse, attempting to find some peace away from well-intentioned friends and ill-intentioned enemies.
Three months since they'd started sharing a bed.
One week since Severus had glanced across the dinner table and realized he'd somehow fallen deeply, irrevocably in love.
Fallen in love. It was absurd, entirely ridiculous and completely out of character. It should never have happened. Not now, with both of their pasts hanging over their head. Not with Teddy, visible remnant of Remus' marriage, sitting between them.
Yet it had happened anyway.
Severus realized that'd stopped walking and was now standing ankle-deep in the snow, staring at nothing. He shivered and walked on.
A flash of colour caught his eye, and Severus turned to investigate. His breath caught as he came upon a tree wrapped in the long, climbing rambler vines of a rosebush. And, against all odds, deep red blooms were nearly glowing against the brown bark and white snow. Slowly, Severus pulled off his gloves and moved forward, feeling the barest tingle of magic as he reached out to touch a soft petal.
A rose fell from the vine and into his hand, long thorns sliding scratchily against his skin.
Roses in February. It was impossible… yet it existed. Much like his love.
Severus fitted his thin fingers between the thorns and lifted the rose to breathe in the rich scent. Turning away from the rosebush, Severus began walking back toward the cottage.
He looked back once, but the rosebush was gone.
---
Remus yawned away the last of sleep and rolled over to see Severus sitting on his side of the bed, back to Remus as he gazed down at something in his hands.
"Morning," Remus said. He touched Severus' back, feeling the cold that had seeped through Severus' outerwear into his shirt. "Been for a walk?"
"Yes," Severus said. His arms jerked a little, then Severus reached over and placed a lovely red rose on the pillow beside Remus. Leaning over, Severus brushed a kiss to Remus' lips, and said, cryptically, "Robert Burns."
Remus stared after him as he left the room, then snatched up his dressing gown. A moment's perusal of the bookshelves in their room found a book of poetry, and Remus tucked himself back into bed to flip rapidly through it.
O my luve is like a red, red rose
That's newly sprung in June;
O my luve's like the melodie
That's sweetly played in tune.
As fair art thou, my bonny lass,
So deep in luve am I;
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a' the seas gang dry.
Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi' the sun;
I will luve thee still, my dear,
While the sands o' life shall run.
And fare thee weel, my only love,
And fare thee weel, awhile!
And I will come again, my love
Though it were ten thousand mile.
Remus swallowed hard, then set the book aside to carefully pick up the thorny rose. He rose out of bed, shoved his feet into his slippers, and went to find Severus.
A series of noises brought him to the kitchen, where Severus was cooking breakfast, Teddy on one hip. Glancing at the table, Remus saw an extra glass, full of water, and smiled. He transfigured it into a lovely tall vase and set the rose in the water.
"Severus?"
Severus wouldn't look at him. Gently, Remus caught him by the chin and turned his face so Severus would meet his eyes.
"I love you too."
