The Farmer George was packed. Remus slipped a fiver to one of the barmaids with a whispered "my friend needs to sit down. Dog bite, you know," and followed her to a suddenly empty booth near the back. Severus nodded stiffly at her helpful suggestion of "a pint to help the pain," and took his seat.

"Are you all right?" Remus frowned at how pale Severus had gone. "We can - "

"That man by the telly. The one with ginger hair." Severus swallowed. "Does he come here often?"

Remus peered over his reading glasses. "Sometimes. Why?"

"He's my ex-boyfriend."

"Have you seen Poppy? Thestral bites can be nasty." Remus automatically stepped forward to help as Severus tried to pull on a jacket with one hand. "I've heard some horror stories about infection."

"She's seen it. Said I needed to keep it open for a few hours until she'd heal it." Severus raised the wounded hand. "I've taken the standard anti-infection potions. Now all I have to do is wait three hours."

He gave Remus a sardonic look. "Going to London is an acceptable way to pass the time."

"Glad to help," said Remus as they reached the sally port.

Remus paused outside the door to Severus' quarters. Muggle music on the wireless was understandable during the holidays, but it was halfway through January.

He's a half-blood, like me. Why shouldn't he like the Beatles?

"Severus? I was at the school and - my God, what happened to you?"

Severus scowled at the bandage swathing his hand. "Hagrid was ill, so I took his classes. Thestral bite."

"If you want to put off going into town - "

"I'm fine. Let's go."

Severus opened the creamy white envelope. He stared at the contents, then tore invitation and envelope into precise halves, quarters, and eighths.

Remus waited for him to finish before slipping an arm about his waist. "What was it?"

"An invitation. It's the fiftieth anniversary of that old fraud Pickingill serving on the Board of Governors." Severus exhaled. He was trembling slightly.

"I know you hate him, love - "

"It was addressed to 'Deputy Headmaster Snape and guest.'"

Remus hugged him more tightly. "He won't live forever."

Resolution #4: We will only accept invitations that acknowledge us as a family.

"Shit," muttered Severus, for what had to have the fiftieth time. The conference paper was due on Monday morning, and he simply could not find the right words.

John, in his playpen, made a gagagagaga! sound and banged a stuffed toy against the netting. Severus breathed a curse under his breath. Remus was off at an organizing meeting for the werewolf rights conference and -

"Severus? How is the writing - "

"SHIT!" Johnny shrieked as a toy landed at Remus' feet. "Shit shit shit shit!"

Remus glared. "Damn," said Severus.

Resolution #1: We will not curse around the baby.

"Ha. Esther wants to know when we're going to schedule John's bris." Severus closed his eyes. "Yule logs and circumcision go together so nicely."

"Your gift certificate is for a wild wheatgrass enema."

Severus winced. "Next year, Gemma's."

"Agreed."

Dinner was marred by Esther and her daughter sparring over the food, Stevie cursing when his electronics charm failed," and Maggie regaling them with tales of her Yule potluck ritual. By the time everyone had gone back to their lodgings, Severus had a violent headache and Remus had poured himself a double, no ice.

"Your mother - "

" - is better than your cousin." Remus slumped into a chair. "What happened to Julie?"

"I've no idea." Severus rubbed his aching head. "Thank God John is too young for such nonsense."

"Teenagers. The gift that keeps on giving," murmured Remus.

"Happy Yule, darling!" Maggie Lupin beamed as she laid Johnny down for a nap. "Do you everything ready? I saw the menorah downstairs, and the tree, and the presents."

"As ready we're going to be," said Remus. He'd heard Julie/Judith make a waspish remark about the sexism of First Footing, followed immediately by Severus being dismissive. "We should have had the Gruners come in January. This - "

"I'm sure it will be lovely," said his mother. "Having family near is such a gift."

Now was not the time to remind her that gifts could be both good and bad.

Remus had gone upstairs helping his mother unpack. Esther had insisted on helping with tea, and now was urging Severus to tell them all about how he liked parenthood. Julie/Judith had sat down with her back to the Christmas tree, while Stevie had pronounced the stone fireplace "cool" and started working his way through the chocolate digestives.

"So the Headmistress First Foots?" Esther glared at her son, who dropped the last digestive.

"It would be more accurate to say that she sends me out," said Severus. "Tall, dark-haired men are considered good luck."

"That's sexist," said Julie/Judith from her corner.

Lunch was tense, even after Julie/Judith stopped talking about Shmueli/Sammy long enough to nibble at a salad. Severus explained that they did not burn a Yule log at Hogwarts, but they were welcome to watch him First Foot if they didn't mind passing the Sober-Up.

They had almost reached the Copper Beeches when the Knight Bus pulled up with a backfire that set the neighbor's mutt to yapping. A woman in tie-dyed robes emerged, took one look at Remus, and threw her arms about his neck.

"Who's that?" said Julie/Judith, making a face.

Severus managed a thin smile. "My mother-in-law."

Julie/Judith stormed off to the loo, her mother in her wake. Severus gave Remus his best I told you so look and turned to Esther's husband. "What is going on?"

Alan signaled to Rosmerta and ordered. "Julie thinks she's in love. His family is more observant than ours, so suddenly she's going to a different temple and keeping kosher. That's half the reason we're here. Esther thinks seeing an old English Yule - "

"We're in Scotland. Different customs."

"As long as Sammy's in America, Esther doesn't care." Alan shook his head. "Can you take her First Footing or something?"

Severus was about to tell him that First Footers were traditionally male when mother and daughter returned. Julie/Judith's scowl made her look amazingly like a teenaged female version of Severus.

Esther smiled at the sight of Johnny, who had returned to drooling on his Yule-themed overalls. "Is that Johnny? Come to Esther and let her take a good look at you!"

"He's doing well," said Remus, banishing the drool. "Happy, healthy, and trying to stand up."

"He's cute," said Julie/Judith. She stroked the silky dark hair. "Shmuli's little sister is about this age. Maybe our kids - "

Esther winced.

Stevie grunted and turned to Remus. "You follow quidditch? Chicago's in the Yuletide Cup."

"Not as much as I - Johnny, no, don't eat the napkin - "

Esther nodded to the innkeeper. "We've been so excited about this trip! Yule logs and caroling and First Footing - "

"Imma? This isn't kosher!"

"Julie, you - "

"That's Judith!"

Remus frowned. Since when did Esther's family keep kosher?
