Luke leaned in toward Noah, sighing quietly as their lips finally met. It felt like ages since he had kissed his boyfriend. They were both still so nervous around each other physically, it seemed like whenever one of them was ready to take things a step further the other shied away. But this - this was perfect. Luke brought one hand up, sinking it into the softness of Noah’s hair, parting his lips against the gentle pressure of Noah’s tongue. Luke couldn’t stop his moan as Noah licked delicately at his lips before pressing inside. Wrapping his other arm around Noah’s waist he pulled the other boy flush against him, delighting in Noah’s moan of pleasure.
The sudden opening of the door had Luke and Noah jumping away from each other, and the knowing look on his father’s face made Luke flush in embarrassment. After an intensely awkward conversation in which his father made it painfully obvious that Luke and Noah were to stay in their respective beds for the rest of the night his father finally went back upstairs.
“Well” Noah said, and Luke looked at him, trying to convey his apologies without words, “Night”
“Night” Luke answered turning and walking to the stairs. He paused for a moment turning back. “Noah…” he trailed off, unsure what to say.
“Yeah” Noah said, and there was so much love in his eyes Luke could feel his breath catch and his chest tighten with emotion. “Me too.”
Luke made his way slowly and carefully up the stairs. Half the time he was totally fine, but the other half it was like one or both legs would suddenly go numb and refuse to move like he wanted them too. He finally made it to his room and got ready for bed. He climbed under the sheets and curled up with a smile on his face. Today had been the best day of his life and he couldn’t wait to see what tomorrow would bring.
Holden stood outside of Luke’s room, waiting for his son to finish getting ready for bed. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust his son, or even Noah. Actually he was becoming quite fond of the young man who had stolen his son’s heart. It was just that he remembered being 17, and he understood how hormones could overrule everything else. Hearing the noises from his son’s room stop he knocked quietly at the door.
“Come in” Luke answered.
“Hey Luke” Holden said, stepping in and closing the door behind him.
“Dad” his son said cautiously, “everything all right?”
“Everything’s fine. I just wanted to talk to you for a minute.” Holden couldn’t help but smile as Luke’s face took on what Holden had secretly begun calling his ‘oh shit’ face when his son turned 9.
“Okay” Luke said. “What’s up?”
“I want to talk to you about Noah”
“Dad-”
Holden held up a hand to stop the coming protest. “It’s nothing bad, I just – Luke I don’t want you to get hurt. You’re only 17 and Noah’s only 18. I just want you to be careful. You have a lifetime ahead of you. I just want you to take it slow.”
“I know Dad, and we are. This is my first real relationship; I’m not going to rush it. Besides, Noah is just barely able to admit he’s gay. I don’t think either of us are ready for much more.”
“And what I walked in on tonight?” Holden couldn’t help asking, hiding his smile when his son flushed beet red.
“Yeah” Luke answered, running a hand through his hair. “Sorry about that, we - ” Luke paused and looked away for a moment. When he turned back to his father his face was radiant. “He told me he loves me” Luke said, a huge smile breaking across his face.
Holden reached out and pulled his son into a hug. “I’m happy for you Luke, I really am” he said, letting go and ruffling Luke’s hair. “There’s just one more thing. I know you say you aren’t ready to take things further, but when you do-”
“Dad!” Luke cut him off, “I know, alright? We had this talk 5 years ago, we don’t need to have it again. I love you, and I promise we’ll be careful, now go to bed.”
“Alright” Holden sighed. “I love you too. If you need anything…” he trailed of as he left the room, smiling as his son rolled his eyes.
Noah punched the pillow, trying to make it more comfortable, sighing at the wasted effort. He was never going to be able to sleep tonight. His skin was still tingling where Luke had touched him, and just the memory of Luke’s face when he said he loved him would be enough to keep him up for countless nights. Noah could count on one hand the number of times he or his father had said ‘I love you.’ He had grown up believing it was something real men didn’t say, but with Luke – Luke was the bravest man Noah had ever met and he said it all the time to his parents and siblings, and now to Noah. Noah hoped that one day soon he could be as brave as Luke and admit his feelings out loud.
Hearing a knock at the doorway he glanced over, jumping off the couch when he saw who it was. “Mr. Snyder” he stuttered, “is everything alright?”
“Everything is fine, I just wanted to talk to you for a minute. Sit back down” Luke’s father said, gesturing to the couch and sitting down across from him.
Noah sat back down keeping his back ramrod straight. He was never sure how to act around Luke’s dad. He got the feeling the man didn’t approve of his relationship with his son, but Luke assured him he was fine with it.
“I can’t believe I’m even saying this, it’s going to sound totally clichéd” Holden said, rubbing his hands over his face before looking straight into Noah’s eyes. “What are your intentions toward my son?”
“Sir?” Noah asked cautiously.
“I just want to make sure you’re both on the same page. I don’t want Luke to get hurt, he’s had enough pain to last a lifetime” Holden said, seeming to stare straight through Noah. “What do want and what do you expect from a relationship with Luke?” he said after a moment, his piercing gaze settling back on Noah.
“Mr. Snyder, I care deeply for your son. I suppose I want the same things anyone wants from a relationship. I want to get a chance to know Luke better, to go on dates and hang out and see if there’s a chance for our relationship to deepen into something more. I think that it can.” Noah answered, holding his breath as he met the other man’s eyes. After a moment Mr. Snyder relaxed slightly and Noah sighed silently in relief.
“Okay” Holden said. “About what I walked in on tonight…”
Noah froze for a moment, then looked straight into Holden’s eyes. “I’m sorry you walked in on that, we should have been more respectful in your family’s home. Honestly that was only the fifth time I’ve ever kissed your son. You don’t have to worry about that aspect of our relationship. I know I’m not anywhere near comfortable enough for things to go further between us, and I don’t think Luke is either.”
The two men stared at each other for a moment then Holden sighed and stood up from the couch. “Thank you for being so honest with me Noah. Get some sleep – and Merry Christmas.”
“You too Sir” Noah answered.
“Call me Holden” Luke’s father said with a smile, reaching out to ruffle Noah’s hair before leaving the room.
Noah collapsed back onto the couch with a groan after Mr. Snyder – Holden – left the room. He couldn’t believe that had just happened. Now he really wasn’t going to be able to fall asleep.
