"The Next Level," Chapter Five
Luke opened his eyes, awakening from his peaceful slumber. It took him a second to realize he wasn’t in his bed, at the farm. Memories from the previous evening flooded his brain, and it finally hit him…he had spent the night at the Lakeview, with Noah.
“Noah….”
As he turned over, hoping to face his boyfriend after their first night together, Luke was shocked to find him missing. He lifted his upper body forward, allowing the sheets to fall to his waistline. He frantically searched around the room from the bed. Noah was nowhere to be found.
Luke fell back onto the mattress and turned over, burying his face in the pillow. He screamed as loud as he could, allowing the pillow to muffle the noise. It had been such a great evening, far exceeding anything he had expected. How disappointed was he to realize that Noah didn’t feel the same?
“Uh, is everything okay?”
The screaming stopped, as did the frustration, only to be replaced by sheer embarrassment. Luke kept his face buried in the pillow.
“Luke?” Noah asked. “Are you alright?” He was clearly amused.
Luke finally raised his head. His face was still flushed. “Yeah, I’m okay.” Still tired, he was able to manage a half-smile at the sight of Noah, bare naked save for the towel wrapped around his waist. “I just was…worried. You weren’t in bed when I woke up.”
“Relax,” Noah said. He sat down on the edge of the bed. His hand caressed Luke’s bare chest. “I’m not going anywhere.”
“I know,” Luke replied. Noah leaned over and gave him a kiss. Luke pulled back, surprised by the minty fresh taste. “You brushed your teeth??”
Noah gave a small laugh. “Yeah, I did.” He kissed Luke again. “I have really bad morning breath.”
“Now I have to go brush my teeth too,” Luke responded. He tried to get up, but Noah pushed him back down onto the bed.
“It’s okay,” he said, planting another kiss on his boyfriend. “Believe me.” Noah smiled, and Luke had no reason to doubt it wasn’t true.
“What time is it, anyway?” asked Luke, letting out a loud yawn.
“7:30.”
“7:30??? In the morning???”
“Yeah.”
“What the hell are you doing up at 7:30 in the morning?”
“I brushed my teeth, took a shower…I usually get up this early anyway.”
“There are so many things I don’t know about you….” Luke looked lost for a moment, realizing the words he spoke couldn’t be truer. Still, he knew his feelings for Noah were just as true.
“Well, I guess you’ll have to find them out,” Noah playfully answered.
“I’m sorry, but being awake this early is completely unacceptable,” Luke said. He grabbed Noah’s arm and drew him back into the bed. As they started kissing again, Luke reached for the towel around Noah’s waist, undoing it and tossing it onto the floor. Noah moaned as Luke’s tongue slipped into his mouth.
“What time do we have to check out?” Luke asked, in between kisses.
“Eleven o’clock,” Noah replied.
“Sounds like we have more than enough time.” Luke rolled over and positioned himself on top of Noah. He didn’t have to say anything, as Luke could already tell he was in agreement.
-------------------------
Noah looked at the comic books that Luke had given him and remembered his words…
“I remember you said your dad wouldn't let you have comic books. I just thought that now, you could have some of your own, and you wouldn't have to hide them."
He wasn’t sure if Luke was speaking literally or in metaphors, but Noah had taken those words to heart.
The bathroom door opened and Luke walked out slowly, fully dressed and toweling off his hair. “I told you I wouldn’t take long,” he said.
“I don’t know how fast time moves in your world, Snyder,” Noah said, “but in mine, that was definitely long.”
“Sorry, but I don’t wake up and look this amazing instantly,” Luke joked back. He advanced closer to Noah. “Don’t worry, you’ll get used to it.”
Noah smiled. “I’m sure I will.” He leaned in and began to kiss Luke again.
“I guess we don’t have time to have another go at it, do we?”
“We’re already pushing it as it is,” Noah said, pulling away. “We should leave before the cleaning people bust down the door.”
“Alright.” Luke pouted. Even though time was ticking, neither of them moved from their embrace. “Noah, I just want to tell you…last night—it was the best night of my life.”
“Me too,” Noah replied. He took a deep breath and stared into his boyfriend’s eyes. “I love you, Luke.”
Luke smiled in surprise. Last night, he asked Noah to say it, but today, Noah said the words out of his own accord. “I love you too,” Luke responded. They kissed once more before checking each other out to make sure they were presentable.
“Okay,” Noah said. “Let’s get back to reality.”
“Do we have to?”
“Yes, we do.”
As they were about to exit the room, Luke turned back around.
“Damn, I forgot my bag!” he exclaimed.
“We can’t leave your man-purse behind,” Noah joked. “Here, I’ll wait in the hallway.” He handed the keycard over to Luke. “Leave this on the table so we don’t have to return it to the desk.”
Noah walked out of the room and the door closed behind him. His smile had yet to fade. As he stood there, lost in his thoughts, he was interrupted by a female voice.
“Noah?”
He turned around, shocked to see the last person he was expecting to see…Lily Snyder, Luke’s mother.
“Mrs. Snyder??” It was all Noah could manage to say.
“What are you doing here?” she asked. “Did you stay here last night?”
“Um, yes, I…I did. What are you, uh, doing up here?”
“I was just in room 306 talking to one of our—you know, I didn’t see your name on the guest list today.”
Before he could try to explain, Luke came out of the room behind him.
“Alright, I’m ready—“
“Luke???” Lily looked at her son, dumfounded.
“Mom,” Luke said faintly. He immediately bowed his head to avoid her gaze.
“What are you—Did the two of you—You spent the night here???”
The two boys looked at each other, trying to figure out what to say. Just as Noah was about to tell her the truth, Luke spoke up.
“That’s none of your business, Mom,” he said.
“Excuse me?” Her shocked expression had yet to fade. “I’m your mother, Luke. Everything you do is my business! How dare you speak to me like that?”
“I’ll stop speaking to you like that when you stop sleeping with Dusty!” he shouted back. Noah kept his head down to the floor, clearly uncomfortable to be in the middle of this argument.
Lily was left speechless as she tried to stare down her son. It was clear that he wouldn’t back down.
“Let’s go,” Luke said. He grabbed Noah’s hand and led him towards the elevator. Noah looked back at Mrs. Snyder, standing in the hallway, tears welling up her eyes. He couldn't help but feel sorry.
-------------------------
“You wanna talk about it?” Noah asked, as they drove back to the farm.
“Isn’t that my line?” Luke replied. His eyes had yet to move away from the passenger window.
“Listen, Luke, you can bite my head off if you want, but I have to say something. I think you were a little too hard on your mom back there.”
He finally turned his head to face Noah. “I know,” he said. “I know. It’s just…the look on her face…it was like—like she was disappointed in me, or something. It just…brought back memories of when I first came out to her.”
“I don’t think she was disappointed,” Noah said. He reached for Luke’s hand. “Shocked, I’m sure, worried, maybe, but not disappointed. She loves you, Luke. And so do I. And we’re going to make sure that she knows we care about each other.”
“When did you become so good at giving reassuring speeches?” Luke asked, gazing at Noah lovingly.
“I guess I learned it from you.” Noah drew Luke’s hand to his lips and gave it a peck. They pulled up to the Snyder Farm and Noah turned off the engine.
“So, have you decided yet?” Luke asked.
“Decided on what?”
“If you’re going to stay with me. Here, at the farm.”
“Luke, I’m not sure—“
“Oh, come on. I’ll make it worth your while.” Luke placed his hand on Noah’s thigh.
“Yeah, I’m sure your Dad and your grandmother would really appreciate that.”
“Please, Noah.” Luke suddenly became serious. “I want you to stay with me. I want to spend Christmas with you. It would mean so much to me.”
Noah looked at his boyfriend’s earnest expression. How could he resist? “Okay,” he said. “I’ll stay with you.”
Luke reached over and hugged Noah before giving him a kiss. They smiled at one another and got out of the car. The two of them didn’t expect to see Holden waiting for them at the porch.
“Long night?” Holden asked.
“S-sorry, Mr. Snyder,” Noah replied nervously, not giving Luke a chance to talk. “We, uh, were up late last night and fell asleep in my, uh, dorm room.” He didn’t look at Holden in fear of turning to stone.
“Yeah,” Luke said, trying hard to convince his father. “We, uh, fell asleep. Sorry.”
“A call would have been nice,” Holden said, completely straight-faced.
“I'm really sorry.” Noah couldn’t apologize enough.
“Hey, Dad,” Luke interjected, attempting to change the subject. “Noah said he would love to stay with us during winter break.”
“If that’s still okay?” Noah added.
“Sure,” Holden said. “Of course it’s still okay. You’re always welcome here, Noah.” He was being just cryptic enough to keep the boys in panic mode.
“Thanks, Mr. Snyder.”
“Yeah. Thanks, Dad,” Luke chimed in. Holden looked at his son, placing his hand on his shoulder. He looked him up and down before patting him on the back and letting go.
“No problem,” Holden said. “I’ll prepare the guest room, and Noah, whenever you have a chance you can stop by and bring your things over.”
“Sure,” said Noah.
“Well, I’ll let you boys say goodbye.” Holden proceeded to head back into the house before turning around and adding, “Just remember to call next time, guys.”
Luke and Noah looked at each other in disbelief. “Do you think he knows?” Noah asked.
“I’m sure he does,” Luke answered. “Great, now both of my parents know I’m no longer a virgin.”
“I’m sorry, Luke,” Noah apologized. “I really wanted all of this to be special for you.”
“Noah, what I said before…I still mean it. This was the best night of my life, and I wouldn’t change it at all.” Luke reconsidered. “Well, maybe the awkward moments with my parents, but nothing else.”
Noah laughed and cracked a smile. Luke stretched his hand out and stroked Noah’s cheek.
“I guess I’ll see you back here later then? When you move in?” Luke could hardly contain his excitement.
“Yeah,” Noah replied. “I’m just gonna go pack up my stuff and I’ll be back before you know it.”
“Alright,” Luke said, smiling with glee. “I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
They kissed each other goodbye for the moment. As Luke walked into the house, Noah headed back to his truck with an extra spring in his step. It was still a couple more days until December 25th, but he already knew that this would be the best Christmas ever.
