I was inspired by upcoming spoilers to write this, so I just hope I'm able to finish before the show discredits my story! I welcome any comments and criticism (as long as it's constructive), so without further ado, here it is. Enjoy!
"The Next Level," Chapter One
“Here’s looking at you, kid.”
As the music played during the movie’s final scene, Luke picked his head up off of Noah’s shoulder and looked over at his boyfriend to gauge his reaction. Noah was still completely enthralled, causing Luke to roll his eyes in mild annoyance. As he kept his eyes focused on the credits, though, Noah also kept his hand firmly intertwined with Luke’s. Experiencing the feeling of Noah’s hand in his, the sensation of his head on Noah’s shoulder, as well as the close proximity of their warm bodies, was reward enough for having to suffer through “Casablanca.” Or at least Luke had tried to convince himself it was, as the evening fell way short of his expectations.
“Wasn’t that great?” Noah asked. He shifted his body out from under Luke’s and let go of his hand, getting off of the bed and heading towards the TV to shut it off.
“It was…okay,” Luke responded unenthusiastically.
“Oh, come on! ‘Casablanca’ is an American classic!”
“Well, if by ‘classic’ you mean ‘kind of boring,’ then I concur.”
“Remind me never to watch movies with you again.” Noah grinned sarcastically at Luke, then turned around and faced the TV, pulling the DVD out of the player and put it back in its case. As he stood there, Luke stared at him longingly from the bed, admiring his athletic build, the frame of his shoulders, and of course, his cute ass. Noah turned back around suddenly and Luke tried to divert his gaze and focus on something else in his room, his face still flushed from his carnal thoughts.
“If you didn’t wanna watch the movie, why didn’t you just say so?” asked Noah. As much as he loved his old movies, he knew they weren’t Luke’s cup of tea.
“Well, I didn’t think we were going to actually watch the movie,” Luke replied.
“Why wouldn’t we watch the—oh, uh…never mind.” Noah shook his head as Luke laughed, picturing the light bulb going off in Noah’s mind. There was an awkward silence as both boys tried to figure out what to do next.
“So….” Luke said, if only to fill the air with noise.
“So, uh,” Noah stammered, “I guess next time, you can pick the movie.”
“You promise?” Luke lowered his voice and bit down on his lower lip, shooting Noah a seductive glance. He nervously smiled in response and managed to spit out “Sure” before his mouth completely dried up. His eyes wandered around the room, hoping not to meet Luke’s. He spotted a shelf with some old pictures on it and walked over quickly.
“This is you?” He grabbed a picture frame off the shelf and shoved it in Luke’s direction.
“No, it’s my twin brother,” Luke deadpanned, clearly frustrated.
Noah studied the picture carefully. Luke was holding a basketball and wearing a numbered jersey and shorts in the photo, looking considerably younger than he appeared now.
“I didn’t know you played basketball,” Noah said, genuinely surprised.
“Yep,” countered Luke. “In high school.”
“You look so different here.” Noah sat down on the bed, his back turned to Luke, still clutching the picture in his hand. Luke moved closer and leaned over Noah, draping his arms over him and placing his chin on Noah’s shoulder to take a look at the photo.
“Well, it was like, a year ago.” As they both looked at the picture, Noah’s face went blank. Even though it was a fairly recent photo, he could see the change from the boy in the picture to the young man hovering over him. Luke’s boyish good looks remained, but his face was more hardened now than it was then, as a result of the tragic events they both had experienced in the past year. No, I’m not going to let myself go there, Noah said to himself, as he tried to shake off his dark thoughts. He twisted his body around, letting Luke fall into him, clasping his arms around the small of Luke’s back.
“So you must be a little rusty then, huh?” Their faces were so close. Luke savored the touch of Noah’s breath over his lips.
“It’s like riding a bike,” Luke replied slyly. “You never forget.”
“Well, maybe you can show me some of your moves, Snyder.” Noah tilted his head forward and nuzzled Luke’s nose with his. “When you’re at 100 percent, that is.”
“Please, I could take you on right now, at 80.” Luke leaned in a little closer to tease Noah, and he immediately responded by pressing his lips against Luke’s, then pulling back a bit. Luke leaned forward even more, hungry for the taste of Noah’s mouth. They kissed deeply and passionately, and Noah leaned back on the bed, allowing Luke to rest on top of him. After what seemed like an eternity to Noah, but only a stolen moment to Luke, Noah pulled away.
“It’s getting late,” Noah said, after breathing a heavy sigh. “I better get going.”
Luke pressed his forehead against Noah’s lips and let out a loud gulp. “Are you sure?”
“Yeah.” Noah quickly pecked Luke’s forehead. “My roommate has an early class tomorrow. He’ll be pissed if I get in late and wake him up when he’s sleeping.”
Luke let all of his weight fall on Noah’s body in an effort to hold him down, forcing him to stay. However, after a moment’s consideration, he resigned.
“Alright.” Luke rolled over to allow Noah to get up and compose himself. As Noah grabbed his jacket, Luke sat pensively on the other side of the bed. Before Noah could say his goodbye, Luke blurted something out.
“You know, you could stay if you wanted to.” His back remained turned, afraid to face Noah’s reaction.
“Huh?” Noah asked, puzzled.
Luke sighed, realizing he needed to be brave in this moment. He carefully stood up so as not to fall on the floor, as he was still getting used to using his legs again. He inched closer to Noah until he could rest himself on his body.
“I said you could stay, if you wanted to,” Luke repeated, before adding, “for the night.” Despite the layers of clothing he was wearing, Luke couldn’t feel more naked as he did now. He hugged Noah tightly, placing his hands on his lower back before kissing him again, even deeper and more passionate than before.
“Luke,” Noah whispered in between kisses.
“Noah, let me just say this,” Luke interrupted. “You know how I feel about you, and I think I know how you feel about me. I think it’s time…we took our relationship…to the next level.” Luke continued to kiss Noah in between pauses. He then pressed his body against Noah’s in an effort to become closer than they’ve ever been. Before long, Noah pulled away again. He hunched over and pressed his forehead against Luke’s.
“Luke,” he said. “I want to. Believe me, I do…but this isn’t the right place.” Luke turned his head to the side, careful to avoid Noah’s stare and show his disappointment. “I mean, here, at the farm? With your Dad, and--"
"So, you're scared of my Dad?"
"Honestly? Yes."
"You know he's okay, with us. I mean, he lets us watch movies in my room without a second thought."
"Yeah, but I don't think your Dad thinks about what goes on. And besides, this isn’t exactly how I imagined our first time.”
“So you’ve thought about it, then?” Luke’s head shot back up in encouragement.
“Yes! God yes!” Noah exclaimed.
“Well, that’s good.” Luke laughed a little, even though he was still a bit wounded. He repositioned his arms around Noah’s shoulders and found the courage to look into his eyes again.
“I just want you to know…” Luke paused as he tried to find the words. “Wherever the right place is…or the right time...I’m ready.”
Noah smirked in response. “I’ll keep that in mind.” They kissed again, and although it wasn’t as passionate as before, it was more tender and loving than any kiss preceding it.
“Okay, I really do have to go now,” Noah said. “See me out?”
Luke followed Noah out of the room and to the door, closely, hand in hand. As he watched Noah drive away, he couldn’t help but smile. This night didn’t turn out so bad after all, he thought.
