Through the years
Age 10
Luke was a happy kid. He was smart and funny with a loving family and the girl's in class thought he was the cutest boy in school. All in all he pretty much had the fifth grade sewn up. He had tons of friends, and got invited to tons of birthday parties. But he couldn't help feeling like something was missing, like there was more out there for him. He knew that when he grew up he would travel the world and work as a famous writer. It wasn't a dream. It was a plan. But in the mean time he was a ten year old in a small town hoping for something to change.
Then one day, the teacher announced that there would be a new kid starting in his class. Always the dependable student Luke volunteered to show the kid around and give him the grand tour. Not long after a tall and lanky kid came into the classroom and upon the teacher's insistence came and stood at the front. Luke was instantly taken with his new classmate thinking to himself 'he's pretty'. In his head it sounded like the wrong word but it matched the feeling of the butterflies in his stomach. His name was Noah and he and his family had just moved to town. His dad had been in the army, but was retired now so after 8 schools in 6 years Noah would finally be staying put. Luke didn't really listen to what the new kid had to say, as he was too busy watching the boy that he would soon get to some spend time with.
He must have really zoned out because the next thing he knew he had come face to face with the prettiest pair of blue eyes he had ever seen. Grade five would be a good year.
Age 13
By the time they reached Jr high school Luke and Noah were thick as thieves. In three years they had become the very best of friends, and usually where you found one, the other wasn't too far behind. Then one-day things got bad. Luke's biological father had come to town suddenly wanting to reclaim his son. Luke barely knew this man and made it clear in no uncertain terms that he was a Snyder and that would never change. Damian's reappearance threw Luke into a complete tailspin not knowing who he was or where he belonged. The only person that ever made him feel better was Noah. He didn't care if Luke was a Snyder or a Grimaldi; he just knew he was his best friend.
After one particularly spectacular argument debating whether or not Luke would spend the summer in Malta he had had enough. He screamed at all of them for making decisions about him without him, ran out the door, jumped on his bike and took off to the only safe place he knew. He went straight to Noah.
Upon reaching his best friend he was a snotty sobbing mess but Noah just held him until he let it all out. After Luke had calmed down some he and Noah walked to the creek behind Noah's house. It was no Snyder pond but it was a place where they both felt safe and happy. They sat in silence for a while, Noah knowing not to push. Luke would talk when he was ready. As the sun started to set Luke let out a sigh and began to speak.
“They keep fighting over me, like I’m some kind of prize. A trophy that will prove that one side is better than the other. But I’m not. I hate feeling like my life is some sort of stupid competition.”
Noah remained silent letting his friend continue.
“Funny thing is, if they knew the truth none of them would want me. I wouldn’t be such a prize pig after all. I guess the jokes on them.”
Noah was confused at Luke’s comments and finally spoke.
“What do you mean they wouldn’t want you? It’s obvious they do. You’re like the best guy I know”
Luke felt a calm wash over him thanks to Noah’s reassurance and knew he had to be honest.
“Noah, you know you’re my best friend right?” Noah nodded “and you know I never want anything to ruin our friendship right” Noah nodded again, not understanding where Luke was going with this. Sensing his friend’s confusion he decided to cut right to the chase.
“Noah, um…well. I’m…I’m gay”
Luke didn’t know if Noah would hit him or hug him and for a moment was worried that it was bound to be the former. But Noah surprised them both when he looked Luke in the eye and simply said, “Okay”. They sat in silence on the bank of the creek until it got dark, knowing that their friendship would survive anything. Luke came out to the rest of his family that same month, in part hoping that the information would push them all away, but really fearing that they would never come back.
Age 16
In high school Luke and Noah had grown apart somewhat. No more than the average lifelong friends, but they often missed spending time together. Their very different interests were the main cause of the split. Luke was part of the newspaper, the basketball team and the school’s lgbt organization, while Noah was part of the school’s television station and the ROTC, due to a compromise he struck with the Colonel. Though Luke had been out since junior high, people never questioned Noah or all the time they spent together. Their nickname around the school was “the gay straight alliance”, and they really didn’t mind too much. Luke had had a tough time after he first came out to his family, but now, things were good. The only person that had any real obvious problem with him still was the Colonel. Initially he had forbid Noah from spending time with Luke once the news of his coming out spread around town. For a moment he even considered sending Noah off to military school to keep them apart. But Noah’s mother loved Luke as if he were her own and fought tooth and nail to keep Noah at home and allowed Luke to visit. However due to the cold manner in which the Colonel treated Luke they spent most of their time at the Snyder’s. Socially both boys were fairly active. They both tried their hand at dating, though neither was very successful at it. Noah usually sought out the quieter more reserved girls in school thinking that they would be more reticent to have sex. Noah wasn’t ready for sex and really didn’t want it to factor into his relationships at that point in time. Meanwhile, Luke tried dating from the relatively small pool of gay teens in town and was considered a prize catch. Who wouldn’t want the adorable, funny rich kid to be his boyfriend? But finding that special someone wasn’t easy. Many of their peers were more than happy to fuck and suck their way through adolescence, but Luke had decided to wait for the right one. At times he thought he’d be waiting forever.
Age 18
This was the year that things took an unbelievably unexpected turn. The boys were headed off to their first year at Oakdale University and were sharing an off campus apartment. Everything was supposed to be perfect. They had discussed being roommates in college for years now, so when Noah started to distance himself from Luke the latter started to wonder if his friend had changed his mind. Noah knew he had been spending less time with Luke as the summer went on, but Luke had been seeing a boy named Tom for a few months now and more often than not he felt in the way. Luke was more serious about Tom than he had been about any guy before and thought that maybe Noah was feeling replaced. Little did he know, Noah jealousy went even deeper than either one of them could imagine. The day of the big move friends and family alike came out to help the boys get settled in their new digs. Since the Snyder family was big enough to easily pass for Mormons, the time just flew by and before they knew it they were settled in their new home. By the time everyone had gone it was just Noah, Luke and Tom left in the apartment. Noah excused himself to his room not really relishing the thought of being the third wheel in his own home. Sensing his roommate’s discomfort Luke asked Tom if he could call him tomorrow, explaining that he should spend the first night in his new place with his best friend. After Tom left, Luke knocked on Noah’s door determined to hash out whatever the problem was, wanting to start this new step in their lives on a good note.
“Hey Noah, can I come in?” he approached slowly not wanting to push.
Noah just shrugged his shoulders and turned away from the door to face the window. Luke took that as a yes, since it wasn’t an outright no and approached his friend.
Once he was sitting on the bed next to him he realized that Noah had been crying. “Jesus Noah, what’s wrong?”
At first Noah was silently staring out the window, but after a few moments had passed he realized he wouldn’t be able to avoid this conversation…not any longer. “Is he still here?” he finally choked out. “Who? Tom? No he’s gone. Told him I needed to spend some quality time with my roomie” he gave Noah a small punch to the arm hoping to lighten the mood. He failed miserably.
“Seriously though man, what is going on? The first night in our new place and you’re hiding in your room crying. Are you homesick? Do you miss your mommy?” Luke asked once again aiming for some levity. Not feeling in the mood to be mocked Noah shot back “No I don’t miss my mom, I’m not a fucking baby Luke” Luke was taken aback by his friend’s tone, but didn’t speak hoping that finally he would find out what the hell Noah’s problem was.
“I…I miss…God this is so fucking stupid. I miss you all right! I miss you” Noah lowered his head unable to look his best friend in the eye. “What do you mean you miss me? I’m right here, always have been. This is because of Tom isn’t it? You think he’s been taking up too much of my time. Well I can’t help it that I met someone really special Noah, and I really wish you could just be happy for me”
Noah knew that he had to explain himself before their conversation became a full blown argument. “Luke, there has been something I’ve wanted to tell you for a while now, but it feels like we just never found the time. I’ve been going through some stuff and needed my best friend. So please stop bitching at me for a second and listen” Noah finally turned to Luke to look at him for the first time since he entered his bedroom. “Luke. I’m…well, um…fuck! Luke I’m gay”
And then there was silence. It wasn’t uncomfortable, but it sure wasn’t comfortable either. It was just silent. “You’re what?” Luke finally replied, “Did you say that you’re gay?” Noah looked away again “Mm hmm” was all he could say. “How is this possible? How did I not know? Why didn’t you tell me?” Not being able to keep up with all the questions Noah opted to just answer the last one “I’m telling you now”. Luke was overwhelmed by the news, but also more than a little angry. All this time Luke dealt with being the gay kid and Noah let him twist in the wind on his own. Why hadn’t he said something sooner, when they could have faced this together? How could Noah do this to him? How could he have been so selfish? But he said none of those things. He just swallowed his pride and held his friend close, the same way Noah had done for him when he came out so many years earlier.
Age 19
Luke had been seeing Tom for just about a year now and things were going well. They had a lot in common and got along great. After six months Tom had been given the distinct honour of being Luke Snyder’s first. He couldn’t believe that someone so smart, so funny and so sexy was still a virgin. But Tom felt such a sense of pride knowing that he had been Luke’s one and only.
Noah had only recently started dating, but was getting nowhere fast. Luke started to describe Noah’s dates with one word: “Too”. See, Noah was a picky guy and after every date he would bend Luke’s ear about their many faults. So far they had been “too short”, “too chatty”, “too promiscuous”, “too clingy”, “too muscular” and Luke’s personal favourite “too everything that is wrong in the world”. But one day when Noah came to share Luke was in for quite a surprise.
“So” Noah said casually as he flipped through Luke’s newest dvds.
“So...” Luke mimicked in response.
“Well, um I guess, well. I’m not a virgin anymore”
Luke was absolutely stunned. Noah hadn’t been seeing anyone and this seemed completely out of left field. “What do you mean you guess you’re not a virgin anymore? You don’t know?”
Noah looked flushed and flustered ‘This really isn’t going the way I had hoped’ he thought to himself. “No, I do know, I’m just a little nervous is all. I am definitely not a virgin anymore.
“Okay, um, with who? You never told me you were seeing anyone” Luke was really and truly confused.
“It was a couple of days ago, with this guy from my classic films class. His name is Jeffrey.” Noah could see how incredibly puzzled his best friend was at this declaration. He had never even mentioned Jeffrey to Luke before. He continued hoping to make things clearer.
“Like I said he’s in one of my classes and we get along really well. So after school we decided to grab a pizza and hang out at his place. We were watching Quadrophenia and drinking wine and talking about, well everything. We had so much in common it was kind of weird. He asked me if I wanted to smoke a joint to enhance our movie watching experience I said sure”
“Noah!” Luke interrupted. “You don’t do drugs. What were you thinking?”
“Oh relax dad” Noah chuckled. “I only had like three puffs and I was coughing like a manic. So don’t rush out and book me a spot on “Intervention” just yet. Where was I again? Oh yeah the coughing. So the coughing turned into laughing, and by this time we were both kinda drunk and a little high and out of the blue he just kissed me.”
“And then?” Luke asked, not giving a moment’s thought as to why he was so curious.
“And then, the kissing turned into touching and it felt so good you know? I mean after all those bad dates, to find someone that I clicked with and to have him want me, well it was unlike anything I ever felt. I told him it was my first time, and he was really sweet about it. We decided that I would top, cause well I’m just not ready for the other stuff” By this time Noah was a bright shade of red. He had never been comfortable talking about sex, not even with his best friend.
“It was kind of awkward, but really nice at the same time. To be honest, I’m just glad I got it over with.” What Noah wasn’t saying was even though it felt great to finally get off with someone other than his hand, something felt off, like there was something important missing. But he didn’t want to admit that. Didn’t want to sound like such a damn girl.
“So I guess you have a boyfriend now huh?” Luke asked, unsure of why he suddenly felt a little queasy.
“Nope, still single. I don’t think it would work out between us at all”
Luke quietly sighed a breath of relief that Noah mistook for exasperation.
“I know you probably think I’m a little crazy and far too picky, but he was just too, too...” his voice trailed off.
“Too what?” Luke asked very curiously.
“I think he’s just too much like me.” Noah knew in his heart that his true other half would be nothing like he was. He would be the light to his dark, the loud to his quiet, and Jeffrey was none of those things. Desperate to change the subject he looked at his roommate and asked “So how are things with you and Tom?”
Luke gave Noah a look that he couldn’t read at all and surprisingly proclaimed “Actually I think I’m going to break up with Tom”. He wasn’t sure why he said it, but suddenly he knew he had to. Within a week Tom and Luke were through, and for the life of him Luke had no idea why he had done it.
Age 21
Luke and Noah had been roommates for three years, and between the two of them their apartment had seen its fair share of boyfriends, the occasional one night stand, the most awkward of blind dates and even one fake girlfriend to put the Colonel’s mind at ease. The boys laughed and fought and worked their asses off trying to achieve the goals they had set for themselves as kids. Due to the fact that they were both in the communications department they had a few of the same classes and were always willing to give each other a helping hand. As luck would have it both boys had projects that they really needed the other’s help with. For Luke’s screenwriting class along with his completed screenplay he needed to shoot one scene of his choosing and present it to the class, while Noah desperately needed a script for a short film he had to make for his shoot and edit class. For the entire semester they worked tirelessly trying to perfect their vision of what they wanted to say and what they wanted to show. When Luke couldn’t find the right words, Noah would help him think outside of the box and when Noah couldn’t find his vision Luke pointed him in the right direction.
After months of tireless work the script and the film were finally completed. They had decided on the story of a young man in the military coming to grips with his sexuality. The scene Luke decided to use for his class was where the young man had to come out to his father, the army colonel. The story had a profound effect on both boys, but even more so for Noah, and he came to realize that once the project was done, things would never be the same between him and his best friend. When their grades finally came back both Luke and Noah were ecstatic. They both got A’s and their work was chosen to be submitted in the school’s film festival. So they went out and celebrated. Celebrated as if they had won the Super Bowl on New Year’s Eve at the Chicago Pride parade. A few drinks after a few too many drinks and the boys were stumbling home arm in arm still basking in their accomplishment. After several failed attempts to open the door, they finally made it in and happily collapsed on the couch. Drunk, happy and tired, Noah decided tonight was the night to share some deeply hidden truths with Luke. He had always been able to keep himself in check, never wanting to put his feelings ahead of the friendship. But tonight, he just didn’t care. As they lay in each other’s arm on the couch, he played with Luke’s hair and he finally spoke.
“Luke, you’re my best friend in the world you know that right?”
“Of course I know that Noah, you’re my bestest buddy too” Luke giggled.
“Working with you has been like, the best thing I’ve ever done. Scratch that, moving to Oakdale was the best thing. Seriously ever.”
Luke found Noah forthrightness adorable, and just smiled as Noah’s hands continued to run through his hair and down the nape of his neck. “I mean we’ve known each other for what- 11 years? That’s forever. Marriages don’t even last that long these days. But here we are. And I bet the next 11 years will be awesome too, don’t you?”
Luke was so wrapped up in the feeling of Noah’s fingers it took him a minute to register what his friend had been saying “Oh totally. You’re like the one constant thing in my life. My family is crazy and the guys I’ve dated were even crazier if that’s possible” Luke chuckled “But you have been my, well…my Noah. And I wouldn’t change you for the world bubby”
As Luke was talking, Noah suddenly became mesmerized by the other man’s mouth, so much so that he could focus on nothing else. He loved the way that Luke’s lips and tongue worked together in blissful harmony. How every word he spoke made him fall just that much deeper. The beautiful man in his lap meant the world to him and he had to let it be known. He just wasn’t sure how. Before he realised it Luke had finished speaking and was looking up at his best friend quizzically “Noah, hellooo...you there?” He broke out of his haze and looked at up.
And with that their eyes locked and neither man could look away. Neither one wanted to. As they shared a look that said all the things that their mouths dare not and they crashed into each other in a passionate long overdue embrace. For Noah, this was the culmination of years of friendship, love and more than a little regret. He had loved Luke before he knew what love was and was now ready to take the plunge. Luke saw the look in Noah’s eyes and was instantly hypnotized. He knew Noah was a good looking man, but today he saw something different, something more. He was no longer looking at his childhood friend, but instead a potential lover. He didn’t know if it was right or wrong and he didn’t care. He needed Noah in this moment and nothing was going to stand in his way. There was no finesse, and no tact. Just drunk, wet sloppy kisses that tasted of wine and want, that made them forget their own names, but most certainly remember the other’s. Kisses that led to frenzied hands grabbing and searching at a desperate pace.
Shirts and pants were discarded with such haste that the next day they would find articles of clothing as far as the kitchen some with fewer buttons to show for it. Wearing only matching black boxer briefs and flushed red faces Noah was the first to speak. His voice out of breath as if he had just run an 8-minute mile.
“Luke…I want you. Want you inside me now. Want nothing but you fucking me now”
Luke’s body was moving light-years faster than his brain and it didn’t look like it was going to catch up anytime soon, but he tried. “Noah…are you sure?” he panted. He needed to know if Noah really wanted this, really wanted him. 11 years of friendship was a lot to risk losing over a drunken fuck.
Noah looked deep into Luke’s eyes, the cloudy drunkenness replaced by sheer longing and want. He knew that what they were doing was crazy, even possibly a friendship ender, but he needed to know. He needed to know what it was like to touch Luke, to taste him. Even if only this one time.
“Right now, I am more sure of this than I am of my own name. Please fuck me Luke. Now.”
They stumbled their way into Luke’s room, pawing at each other as if a moment’s lack of contact would bring this all to an end. Noah stubbed his toe on the door “Ow, shit!”, and both men finally broke some of the tension by bursting into a fit of giggles. But this was no laughing matter, and they tumbled on to the bed with renewed longing and purpose. Over the past few years both boys had accumulated their fair share of sexual experience and know how, but this, them together felt so new, so different, so right. In any normal situation either man would have been a huge fan of prolonged foreplay, but tonight wasn’t any other night and the goal of both men was to take and be taken. There was no time to waste. But before that could happen Noah had to taste Luke, to finally get what he had craved for as long as he knew what sex, good sex really was. He shimmied down Luke’s body and for a moment just took it all in. The feel of Luke, soft yet firm, the scent or sweat and cologne and Luke, a scent he knew so well. A scent he had grown to love. Then suddenly, there he was with Luke’s cock in his mouth, happier than he could ever remember being. He sucked and licked and kissed his dick, practically worshipping it, but he knew he had to stop if he wanted to get what he was really after. Luke inside him, owning him, making him his.
Reluctantly he pulled away with a small kiss leaving Luke more than ready to fuck him. Then there was a quick and not so thorough round of preparation. Luke was too nervous, too turned on, and still a bit too drunk. After fumbling with the condom for longer than is ever considered sexy he finally pushed forward and entered Noah. For a moment he thought that time and life had stopped. Nothing existed outside of the pleasure of being balls deep in his best friend. If it hadn’t been for the beating of his heart he would have been certain that he had died and gone to heaven. The kind of heaven where all you did was have amazing sex.
Noah was a little caught off guard at Luke’s initial thrust. He had only bottomed a handful of times and it had been much slower and more methodical. But nowhere near as good. Once the pain had subsided he was left the most amazing feeling. The feeling of being filled by the person who knew him best. Who had seen him at his best and his worst. The man he, well the man he loved. Noah always knew he had feelings for Luke, but he had never given them a name till now and soon they would find a voice as well. Both men knew they wouldn’t last too long, being as drunk, as they were tired and hornier than both of those combined their climax was due at any moment. “Luke I’m gonna…so fucking close, I-I-I, ahhhh” was the closest thing to a sentence Noah could muster, while Luke simply kept chanting Noah’s name as if it were the basis on which all future religions should be founded. They came at the same time screaming each other’s names, getting lost in a moment neither thought would ever happen. It wasn’t long after they came that both men started to drift off, but before that was going to happen, Noah needed to make his feelings known. In a low and barely audible voice Noah whispered in his best friend’s ear. “I love you Luke. God I really do love you”. And Luke heard every word. But he didn’t reply.
