Challenge Fic: Status
Original poster: bluejeanbaby01
Title: Status
Author: bluejeanbaby01
Rating: PG
W/C: 1100
Warnings: none really
Disclaimer: This is just for fun, no offense is meant. I don't own (or even know) Van or Jake, Luke or Noah, or anything else related to ATWT. I don't make any money from this, either.
Beta: Nope, any mistakes are mine.
A/N: (Written for luke_noah's monthly challenge #3) I've never written an RPS before. Never really felt the need to, given that they are real people I'm playing with instead of fictional characters but this popped into my head (and the boys are just so in love!!!) that I went with it. Plus this fandom does need more RPS.
Feedback: Always appreciated. And I'm not too sure about this piece so if you could let me know what you think about it, I would love you always.
Van sat reclined in a chair on set, waiting for a few of the crew members to replace the light that had nearly missed hitting him a couple of minutes earlier. He was in a bit of a daze over having narrowly missed getting a concussion or worse and hadn’t noticed that Billy was chattering away next to him.
“ - status.”
“Hm?” Van asked confused having just tuned in at the end of the conversation Billy was trying to have with him.
“Are you sure you’re ok?” Billy asked concerned. “I mean, dude, that light just barely missed you. You’re lucky Jake has the reflexes of a cat.”
“Yeah, yeah, I’m fine. Just a little shaken up, but I’ll be fine. What were you saying?” Van closed his hands into fists on his thighs to hide the shaking that hadn’t stopped since the light clipped the hood of his jacket.
“Oh, I noticed you changed your relationship status on Facebook.” Billy raised an eyebrow in a silly looking leer as he said this. “Are you sure you’re ok? Do you want some water or anything?”
“Thanks, but Jake’s taking care of it.” Van nodded his head in the direction that the lanky brunette was walking from, bottles of water in hands.
Jake handed Van the bottle, their fingers grazing, and took a seat in the chair next to Van. “You ok?” Concern laced through Jake’s voice, his eyes searching Van’s face.
Van took a deep swig of the water and nodded. “Yeah, I’m fine. Thanks for the water.”
“Welcome.” Jake continued to look over Van’s face, looking for the lie he was sure Van was telling.
From the other side of Van, “So, about your status change, Van. Who’s the lucky girl?”
“What are you talking about?” Jake inquired.
“Van here changed his status on Facebook last night,” Billy said knowingly.
“No he didn’t. Van hasn’t changed that stupid quote of a status in weeks.”
“Not his status, status. He changed his relationship status.” Billy leaned in closer. “So come on, Van, who’s the lucky girl?”
“There isn’t any girl.”
Jake took a drink of water to hide the subtle curling of his lips.
“Oh, c’mon! There has to be a girl. Who is she?”
“Set in five, guys! Set in five,” they were told.
Jake stuck out his hand to take Van’s water bottle and set it out of the way of roaming feet and the camera track. Van screwed the lid on tight and passed the plastic bottle off, fingers again brushing.
“No girl, Billy.” Van stood up, stretched, and exhaled loudly.
“What? There has to be. You changed your status.”
“Yeah, but I didn’t change it to ‘In a Relationship’ did I?”
Billy opened his mouth, closed it again. “Then why did you change it? I mean, what’s the point?”
“Just felt like changing it.” Van discreetly let his eyes wander to Jake who was talking to one of the crew guys and motioning to the light. Van let the corners of his mouth turn up slightly.
“Whatever, dude.” Billy walked back to his spot and waited for Jake to join him so they could start filming.
++++++++
Van heard the key turn in the lock and glanced away from the movie he had been staring at. Jake entered, pulling his key from the lock, balancing a bag in his arms. He kicked the door closed with his foot and turned to place the bag on the table in order to free his hands so he could lock the door again.
“Hey,” Van said as he muted the TV.
“Hey,” Jake picked up the bag and wandered over to the living room. “What’re you watching?”
“I’m not really watching it. It’s just on, background noise.” He reached out and took the beer that Jake had pulled from the bag. “Thanks.”
Jake popped the top on his own bottle before lifting Van’s feet off the couch and sitting down, placing them on his lap. “You sure you’re ok? That was a really close call today.”
Van swallowed, “Yeah, I’m fine. A little shaken up, but no harm done.” He stretched out, flexing his feet as Jake worked his thumbs into the arch. “Thanks for pulling me out of the way. It was pretty incredible how fast you moved.”
“Yeah well, it’s only ‘cause I didn’t want to have to work with another Luke.”
Van kicked his foot into the inside of Jake’s thigh. “Ouch!” Jake laughed as he moved from under Van’s feet to crushing Van between himself and the cushions.
Van shifted slightly, as much as he could, settling Jake’s weight more evenly on himself, wrapping his arms around Jake’s shoulders, his feet hooking around Jake’s calves. “No, seriously, thank you.”
“You’re welcome.” Jake rested his head in the crook of Van’s neck and exhaled shakily.
“Hey, are you ok?” Van rubbed a circle on Jake’s upper back.
“Yeah, it’s just, it was a really close call.” He pressed his lips to Van’s pulse point. “And it would suck to have to deal with a new Luke, but not as much as it would suck to not have this anymore.”
Van smiled and squeezed Jake closer to him. “You know what Billy was talking about today?”
“The Facebook thing?”
“Yeah.”
“What about it?”
“Well, we didn’t talk about it and this is still, well, this is still so different and new and -”
“Van, I have a key to your place. You have a key to mine. I’m here almost more than I’m at my own place and yes, this is new and more different than any relationship I’ve ever had, but the sex is also better than any of the sex I’ve ever had,” he raised up to look at Van’s face, “so don’t freak out on me over something that is so not important as a Facebook status.”
“I’m not freaking out. I thought you’d freak out.”
“Why would I freak out? You didn’t say that you were in a relationship or who you’re in that relationship with. It’s nothing to stress over or freak out over or even something we had to discuss. It’s just Facebook, Van, not a sign in Times Square or a headline on the New York Times. And to be honest, when I heard that you had taken away your ‘single’ status, well, it was kinda great.”
“It was, huh?”
Jake lowered his head, their mouths close together, barely touching, “Yeah, it was.” He closed the distance between them, lips, tongue, and breath mingling together.
