Summary: After years of happiness, are Luke and Noah headed for a breakup?
Notes: Okay, this is my first fanfic, but I've been so inspired by the show and these two guys that I had to do this. This story is set in the future, and Luke and Noah have been together for a few years now. I welcome any notes, criticisms, etc., but please be gentle! I'm a very sensitive guy! Anyway, hope you enjoy it!
"Ultimatum," Part One
In the six years they had been dating, Luke and Noah had seen each other through so much, from personal tragedies and graduating college to moving in together and beginning their careers and their lives as adults. They were the kind of couple that didn’t keep secrets from each other, especially after the rocky start of their relationship. They also couldn’t keep their hands off of each other. Even as they became more comfortable with each other over time, the affection between them still remained as strong and playful as when they had started dating.
All of this seemed to change in an instant. Noah had come home after a hard day at work at WOAK one unremarkable evening, and Luke could sense that something had changed. His all-too grabby boyfriend was acting strange, emotionally distant and disconnected. They both ate their dinner in near silence, engaging only in small talk more suited for strangers. Noah went right to sleep after they prepared their bed, instead of trying to put the moves on Luke as he usually did. Luke didn’t know what it was exactly, but there was a strangeness he couldn’t comprehend. He had ideas, but he wasn’t even sure if he wanted to know if they were true.
“I know something’s bothering him,” Luke thought to himself. “I just need to give him time, and he’ll tell me. I don’t want to pressure him. He always freaks out when I pressure him.” Even though he hoped for the best, the awkwardness continued for the rest of the week. In those few days, hoping for the best eventually transformed into thinking about the worst. One night, during yet another quiet dinner in their Oakdale apartment, in which words were exchanged once more but nothing was really said, Luke decided he had enough. He and Noah had worked so hard to find each other in the beginning of their relationship, and he wasn’t going to let the years of happiness they had experienced be tossed away by his own cowardice.
“Noah?” Luke asked, looking up at his boyfriend across their small dining table.
“Yeah?” Noah replied. He didn’t look up as he continued to consume his meal.
“Are you cheating on me??”
“What?!” Noah’s shocked response gave Luke some relief, only because it was the most genuine emotion he had witnessed Noah express in days.
“I’m not stupid. I know things have been different. We’ve hardly talked, we haven’t had sex in a while—“
“So that means I’m cheating on you?”
“No! I mean, I don’t know…It’s just…I know something’s going on, and I know if I don’t say anything…I’ve seen relationships fall apart because people were keeping secrets, keeping things to themselves. And I don’t want that to happen to us.”
Noah suddenly got quiet. He remembered how hard it was for Luke to deal with his parents’ divorce, and he could see Luke’s concern that it could happen to them as well. Clearly his attempts to pretend nothing was wrong had only made things worse.
“You’re right, Luke,” Noah said, reaching his arm out to his boyfriend. He gently cupped Luke’s face with his left hand. Luke closed his eyes and savored the touch. “I’m sorry I’ve been acting so weird...I—I’ve had a lot on my mind lately. W-work stuff, you know?”
Noah was a great liar, something perfected by years of practice. However, he had always found it difficult to lie to Luke. He couldn’t even tell a tiny little white lie without being called out on it. Luke loved it when Noah lied to him though. He always knew, because Noah’s face would tense up adorably and he would begin to stutter. It was one of the qualities that Luke loved so much about his boyfriend, but it wasn’t too amusing in this moment.
“Work stuff. Really?” Noah knew that tone of voice all too well. “I don’t think I believe you.”
“Well, it—it’s the truth.”
“Oh give it up, Noah. We both know you’re completely incapable of lying to me.” Luke paused for a second, shifting the lone moment of brevity into something more serious. “Look, I don’t know what’s going on, but…I don’t think I should stay here tonight. I think I’m going to spend the night at the farm with—“
“Wait, what? Luke, come on, I—“
“No, Noah! I know you’re not being honest with me, and I don’t think I want to be around you right now.”
Luke got up from the dinner table and headed towards the bedroom to pack his belongings. Noah quickly followed and grabbed him in the hallway, turning Luke around and forcing him into an embrace.
“I don’t want you to go,” Noah said. He stared into Luke’s eyes, stroking his back and pressing their chests together. Luke tried to resist, but as always, he sighed and gave in.
“Okay then. I won’t.” Noah flashed a smile and drew Luke in for a kiss, but Luke pulled away the instant after their lips touched. “But you need to tell me what’s really going on with you.”
Noah broke their embrace and turned his back on Luke, afraid to see his boyfriend’s reaction to what he was about to say.
“Alright. I’ll tell you. I’ve been thinking of a way to tell you this all week, actually. I know I’ve been distant, but it’s just—I’ve had a lot on my mind. This is tearing me up inside, Luke. You’re the only person I’ve wanted to tell, but I knew you would be the hardest person—”
“What is it? You know you can tell me anything,” Luke interrupted. He placed his hand on Noah’s shoulder and closed the distance between them, wanting to show Noah he would be there, no matter what.
Noah placed his hand on top of Luke’s, but did not turn around. He sighed and said what he had been working up the courage to say for so long.
“I’ve been offered a job…in L.A.”
