[ Luke dug his heels, determined not to give in. “I don’t need any help. And neither do you.”
“God, is this what they call Gay Pride?!” burst out Kevin.
Despite his best intentions, Noah can’t help but crack a smile. Even Luke seemed to lighten up a little.
The three boys were still grinning when a noise from the door drew their attention.
The smile on Luke’s lips disappeared instantly.
Brian.” ]
Noah saw Luke stiffening up and perceived that Kevin had noticed too. They exchanged looks, puzzled.
Seeing Luke so manifestly uncomfortable was pretty unusual. Maybe they had an argument about something, thought Noah. He never saw eye to eye with Brian. And yet, there was something that didn’t convince him… Something was wrong, only he couldn’t get what.
Brian greeted the boys and moved towards the living room, saying something about a sweater of Lucinda’s he was searching for.
“What a sweet husband” muttered Luke between the teeth.
Brian stopped in his tracks and looked him in the face. “I thought we agreed to get on well, for Lucinda’s sake.”
“Well, she’s not here, so I don’t have to pretend.” Pointed out Luke roughly.
Noah frowned. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.” responded Luke sharply, avoiding to look at him.
Noah was taken aback by the vitriolic answer and spotted Kevin’s questioning glance.
Brian closed in, offering his hand, “Luke, I don’t want any hostility. Why don’t we shake hands and start again from scratch?”
Luke gritted his teeth. “I’ll do without it, thanks.”
Noah wrinkled his brow. Luke was in a muddle: he must have had words with Brian and probably he was angry or upset at him. That’s all.
Nevertheless he couldn’t shake off the sensation that he was missing something, but he couldn’t understand what didn’t fit in.
After Luke’s rude response, everyone fell silent. Noah get a load of all them.
And finally he got it.
When Luke was angry, he attacked. When he was upset or sad, he kept quiet. But now it – no, he – was different. He was withdrawing, retracting in himself like a tortoise in its shell. He was tightening his grip on the chair back and shuddering; he seemed to back away, curling up on himself like he was…
Scared.
The realization hit him like a punch in the stomach.
To Noah, Luke was probably the bravest man in the world. He had the guts to come out to his parents and everyone else, to breast Col. Mayer before and after being shot, to recover from paralysis. He fought for Noah, standing by him despite his dad, his fears, his fool decisions to marry Ameera or enlist.
Luke never got scared to such an extent.
Something must have happened.
“Luke.” He said, and he marveled at the sound of his own voice.
Luke lifted his head suddenly. “What?”
“What’s going on?”
“Nothing.” He repeated, stubbornly. I can’t tell him what happened. He would either get mad or snap Brian’s head off. And that’s the last thing we need.
“Bullshit. Stop acting and tell me the truth.” Claimed Noah, reaching for his forearm.
Luke threw up his hands and made as if to storm off. “Leave me alone. All of you.”
Noah walked up to him and pressed forward. “Luke. I’m not fool. Something’s wrong, so spit it out.”
“No.” drawled Luke.
“Why?” insisted Noah.
"Because…” Sorry. Please, please, forgive me, but I can’t. I can’t. “Because it’s none of your business. Not anymore.”
Noah gaped at him, dumbfounded, for a long while. “You don’t trust me?” he asked, but it sounded more like a statement than a question.
“It’s not a matter of trust…” said Luke wearily
“Then tell me what’s wrong.” He locked eyes with him. “Now.”
Luke returned the stare and dithered.
Brian’s voice intervened between them. “Noah… we should leave him alone. Maybe he just needs some rest.”
Before Noah could focus on him, Luke freaked out and ordered Brian. “How you even dare to say what’s best for me!?! Get out of here!”
“Come on, Luke, there's no need to…” said the older man.
Luke raised his voice. “I said – get out of here.”
Brian folded his arms and gave him a defiant look that said Think of Lucinda. Think of your sweet boyfriend, and your parents. You’ve got a lot of things to lose.
“Get THE HELL out of here!” Luke flew into a rage and railed against him, but Noah grabbed him halfway and held him back and tight.
Luke struggled to free himself from his grasp.
“Noah, let me go! Now.”
Noah tightened his grip and refused to comply, and Luke doubled his efforts, clenching his fists in anger.
“Get your hands off me! I’m serious!”
Noah tried to keep Luke’s hands still, fighting against his attempts of thrashing about. Then Luke got loose and thrust him, “Stay away from me!” he screamed jabbing at him.
Noah backed off, lifting his hand to his pummeled cheek, and stared at him, but he immediately fought back and grabbed his right arm, unable to contain himself. “What the hell is getting into you?! Are you crazy?”
Luke wrestled to free himself, to no avail, and settled for scream bawling out. “I’m losing control, ok? Have you ever heard about it? I’m a wreck, I’m pissed off, I’m angry!! I’m freaking out and there’s nothing you can do about it, so keep out!”
Noah was shocked and still in a lather. “Luke…”
“Have you ever lose your temper, Mr. Perfect? Have you ever been completely out of hand?” Luke had jerked away and was shouting, crying out loud as if he couldn’t hold it back anymore, roaring and hollering with all his voice at everyone who could hear him. “Have you ever felt something you can’t keep under control, Noah? Do you ever feel anything?!”
Dumbstruck, Noah opened his mouth in shock for a second then quickly closed the distance between them and kissed Luke. Here it was, his something-that-couldn’t-be-kept-under-co
Luke started to feel dizzy because of the lack of air but kept kissing Noah, like it could be his only occasion to do it, like his whole existence depended on that holding one to another like for dear life.
They parted a few moments later, and neither of the two made a move to edge away. Noah stood there, few inches from Luke, their breaths wheezy, gazing at each other like they were alone in the world, Noah’s leg still brushing Luke’s groin, undoubtedly fueled and heat-radiating. Luke leaned against the table, his legs shaking, his heart bumping violently into his ribs, his whole body both dried up and reinvigorated.
Kevin’s voice broke the spell they were trapped in, “Wow. I guess you missed each other.” he said with a wicked grin.
Noah blushed and broke away, or at least tried to, feeling Luke’s body attracting him like a magnet. He was about to answer Kevin when he saw from corner of his eye Brian lifting off and felt Luke shifting to offensive. “What’s up, Brian? Are you jealous?”
