Summary: Luke finally regains control of his life.
This entry is my shot at schmoop... I wanted to delve into the dynamic between Luke, Luke's siblings, and Noah. I'll get to the closure in chapter 3. Until then, enjoy!
"More please!" exclaimed Ethan, holding up his bowl beaming wtih pride because he finished his dinner... with room to spare.
"How do you do it Luke!?" asked an astounded Faith, "Mom and I struggle with him every meal and yet he wolfs down your food without so much as a tantrum... and tonight we're having leftovers!" Dinnertime with the Snyder kids has always been challenge. Faith had her eating disorder (and is still sensitive about it), Natalie hated foods with weird textures, and Ethan would rather play than sit still for an entire meal. Even Luke as a child was much like his baby brother in antsyness. However, much the to chagrin of his parents, Luke had this special talent to get his sisters and brother to eat their food without a hitch.
"Well, just remember I was young once too," explained Luke. Thanks to him, what could have been an evening of boring leftover chicken and steamed veggies, turned into a much tastier mac n' cheese casserole with said ingredients. Emma would be so proud to see good cooking was genetic. "Plus, cheese makes everything taste better."
"Agreed!" chimed in Natalie. "Is there anything for dessert?"
"Yeah..." trailed Luke looking at this watch. "Dessert was supposed to be here half an hour ago."
"What are you talking about?" incquired Faith. The two girls looked puzzled until they heard the familiar sound of Noah's truck enter the driveway.
"NOAH!" the girls said in unison as they jumped out of their seats and raced to the door.
"Hey guys! Sorry I'm late..." greeted Noah. "There was a rush before I left so I stayed and helped for a little bit but I brought cookies and movie!" As Noah was kidnapped by the girls and taken to the living room to catch him up on their oh so hectic preteen lives, Luke helped the now restless Ethan out of his chair and tried cleaning him up before he broke free of Luke and ran to give Noah a hug.
As Luke caught up to the group and entered the living room, the girls and Ethan went to change into their pajamas while Noah set up the DVD. "I would think the kids missed you by the way they all pounced on you... if that wasn't the way they ALWAYS greeted you," joked Luke as he handed a dinner plate to Noah, who was now unwinding on the sofa.
"Hey don't be jealous because your siblings think I'm cooler than you," cracked Noah. "Some people just have it.."
"The only reason they think you're cooler than me is because you don't have to yell at them," defended Luke. Luke was far from jealous--he loved the fact that his family considers Noah one of their own. "Now scoot over so I can actually sit next to you on a movie night once... Sooo, what did you think of the dinner I pulled together? I got Ethan's seal of approval, now say you."
Noah's mouth was full so his answer wasn't so coherent, but the thumbs up and the clean plate was more than enough for Luke. "Thanks, I really needed that. A guy can only have so much Al's before he forgets what a home cooked meal tastes like--oh and why does cheese make the world taste better?" said Noah as he kissed Luke on the head in gratitude.
"Right?! That's what I was telling the girls earlier." said Luke as he saw his siblings re-enter the living room, pouting in dismay.
"Hey! No fair! Luke, can't you sit on Dad's chair so we can sit by Noah?" complained Natalie.
"I will do no such thing!" snapped Luke. "Besides, you guys always hog Noah on movie nights, so it's my turn for once!" They all crammed together on the sofa, Natalie next to Noah, Ethan by/on Luke, and Faith on the floor in the front of Noah, leaning against the sofa. With cookies and milk in tow, Noah pressed play and they all set their attention to "WALL-E." As usual, Ethan fell asleep halfway through the movie, with Natalie shortly following after. By the end of the movie, Luke carried Natalie and Faith Ethan to their rooms while Noah cleaned up the coffee table.
Luke had joined Noah on the couch, who was waiting for him with a blanket. Already in PJs, Luke tossed Noah some sweatpants and a tee. "I figured you'd wanna get comfortable."
"Thanks, I already called Jeff and told him not to wait up for me," replied Noah as he quickly switched out of his work clothes and tossed them into his backpack.
"I'm so glad you're back," sighed Luke as he cozied up to Noah. "I finally feel like I can rest again cuz believe me, I've had many a sleepless night wondering how you were doing on Jeff's couch--that thing couldn't have been any more uncomfortable than it looked--" Luke was interrupted by soft snoring. He looked up to see that Noah had passed out on him. Apparently Noah felt the same, finding comfort and rest in his Luke. Breaking up can be so exhausting. Softly kissing Noah on the cheek and whispering an "I love you," Luke rested his head in Noah's lap and fell asleep to the sounds of Noah and David Letterman.
Luke would just have to wait until the morning to tell Noah his plans to apologize to Kevin. For now, they were back together, safe in each other's arms and that's all that mattered to him.
