Title: May I Have This Dance?
Author: Footard
Rating: G
Series: 1/1
Summary: Noah has a change of heart. (SPOILER: Involved with current storyline in addition to a spoiler from SOD, but with my spin on it.) -- This is my first attempt at a fanfic, so feedback would be great! Also, I added the song I listened to while writing this in case anyone wanted to get into the same mindset I was in :)
It was New Year’s Eve at Metro. To Noah, it seemed everyone in Oakdale managed to make it to the event (including himself much to the coaxing of Holden)… all except Luke. They’ve been on a “break” since Luke got expelled from OU. Prior to New Year's Eve, Luke proposed the idea of getting back together; unfortunately, Noah refused Luke’s offer, much to Luke’s disappointment. It wasn’t that they couldn’t reconcile, because they had; in fact, they were on good terms before Noah’s rejection. However, Noah couldn’t get over how Luke hated Kevin more than he loved Noah, or at least that’s how he felt. How could Luke be so affected by someone that couldn’t care less about him?
As Noah was standing by the bar reflecting, he was staring at the dance floor where he and Luke shared their first dance. At the time, Luke was barely able to walk after being paralyzed. Noah thought cynically that if not for him, Luke would have been happy to spend the remainder of his life confined to damn wheelchair. It was HIM that pushed Luke to get back on his feet. It was HIM that didn’t give up on Luke when things got tough. How could Luke care more about hating Kevin than loving and trusting HIM?!
Then it occurred to Noah that maybe he wasn’t looking at the big picture. Luke could have cared less if he was paralyzed permanently, but he pushed himself hard to recover for NOAH. He denied himself a public relationship to save Ameera for NOAH. Although he might have run for president to get back at Kevin, he initially got involved with the whole thing to save the film festival for NOAH.
Ok, so maybe Noah got lost in his jealousy and pride, but why shouldn’t he? Luke was one of the best things that happened to him. It was LUKE that helped Noah to come to terms with his sexuality. It was LUKE that welcomed Noah into his home and family when he felt alone living in the dorms. And it was LUKE whole helped put Noah back together after witnessing his father drown –- despite Noah’s many attempts to push Luke away. Noah had every right to be possessive of the person who was his HOME. But there he was, alone on New Year’s Eve and without his home – Luke, all because he refused to accept that maybe he wasn’t Luke’s first love. However, now he realized maybe it wasn’t so bad being Luke’s true love.
What was Noah doing moping at the bar?! He needed to find Luke and make things right. He needed to reclaim his home that he had been neglecting recently because of his bruised pride. This past year may have ended on a bad note, but at least the foundations for a promising future could be set.
It was 11:30… he only had one shot to make it to Luke before midnight and put all this madness behind them. Noah drove to the farm in a mad frenzy, apparently with little regard for his personal safety or traffic laws.
Damn. The farm was deserted—wait, there was a dim light coming through the living room window. As Noah approached the front porch, he saw Luke curled up on the couch. It was obvious by his face that Luke had been crying; he was watching “The Best Years of Our Lives’ and on the coffee table was the Christmas card that Noah gave him the year before. Apparently Luke took a stroll down memory lane too.
11:50… wow, Noah made it with time to spare. Before Noah could knock on the door, Luke instinctively looked up and saw him through the window as if he had been wishing that Noah would appear by divine intervention (which might explain how Noah arrived there so quickly without getting so much as a speeding ticket).
Surprised, Luke rushed to the door. “Hey, what are you doing here?”
“Apparently interrupting you from a good film,” Noah replied with a smile, flattered he caught Luke watching his favorite “old” flick.
“Iit’s my ex-boyfriend’s favorite movie, and since I thought I wasn’t going to see him on New Year’s Eve, I figured watching it would make me feel as if he was here. Clearly it worked,” blushed Luke.
“Well, they say you should spend New Year’s with the ones you love…” began Noah. “I was at Metro and I thought about our dance last year and how happy I was at that moment. We’d only been together for a short period at that time, but we had conquered so much. I’ve never felt so loved or completed by someone until I met you Luke. Being there at Metro a year later only to be by myself made me feel so empty. That feeling made me realize that no matter how much we may disagree; I’d rather fight and fight for us than to ever lose the opportunity of having your love. You have my heart Luke, and I hope I have yours.”
For a man of little words, the poignancy of Noah pouring his soul brought Luke to tears. “How could you ever think anyone other than you would have my heart?” sniffed Luke. “I know you think that because I was in love with Kevin first, that my love for you wouldn’t match the love you have for me, but can’t you see Noah? Our love is so deep that we could be so far apart, but yet we always find our way back to each other-- “ Luke was interrupted by Noah’s alarm.
“Happy New Year Luke,” said a now emotional Noah. “I couldn’t imagine anywhere else I would want to be than here with you.” With that, Noah pulled Luke in for a kiss with an intensity that made up for that month and a half they were away from each other.
There they stood on the porch, locked in an embrace, swaying along to a song only heard between the two of them, Luke and Noah shared another dance.
